“Come for the view; stay to relax.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2014

Let's get this clear first this: you're coming to this hotel for the view. Your room overlooks Charlotte Amalie and the harbor. The restaurant overlooks Charlotte Amalie and the harbor. Your balcony (if you have one) overlooks Charlotte Amalie and the harbor. And no, it doesn't get old.

We came here for our first anniversary and stayed here six nights.

Important things to know beforehand: when first arriving here, you need to drive up when it's still light, especially if you're not used to driving on the left on narrow, windy, steep roads. Parking will be an adventure. And no, you're not going to be able to walk to town under any circumstances. BUT! You came for the view, and it is worth it. (Also, you're just a few minutes' drive from absolutely gorgeous Magens Bay Beach down the other side of the hill.)

The hotel is distinctly not new, but it is still quite nice. (If you care about your hotel's paint job, stay somewhere else. If you want to stay somewhere memorable, however...) We had a comfortable room, a delightfully restful bed, a fairly large bathroom, minifridge and the A/C worked great (it was a wall unit). Water pressure is an issue occasionally when the restaurant is making heavy use, but it's all a connected cistern system, so that's just part of the deal. The only real recommendation for improvement is for softer toilet paper (you'll notice when you get in the ocean).

The staff was very helpful, with good recommendations and advice for getting around the island.

The grounds of the hotel are very pretty, decorated with tropical plants, trees, occasional murals, and coral. The pool is small, but nice to hang out at (and the nice patio furniture provides another spot to stare at the view from...). We spent a lot of time on our balcony, watching sunsets, sunrises, the moon, and cruise ships coming and going. This is definitely a place to come to just sit, relax, enjoy the warm ocean breezes, and put a (temporary) stop to all the rushing and bustle.

Breakfast at the restaurant was included with our room; while it does not start on the dot at 7:30 (island time!), it hits the spot, with complimentary smoothies kicking off your day.

We came to visit our son. Mafolie made us feel right at home, from check in to check out. We ate at the restaurant a few times, awesome and the views were spectacular!! Thx again we really live the location and it was easy to call a taxi.

We just returned from our visit to St. John's Cinnamon Bay Campgrounds for a week and then back to St. Thomas to what is turning out to be our old friend; The Mafolie Hotel. For years, we have had a love-hate relationship with this family owned hotel depending on who owned it at the time and just how many hurricanes came through. The family that owns it now are fabulous. They have taken an old, tired West Indian hotel and are lovingly restoring it bit by bit. I remember it in its many incarnations and this is by far the best. The rooms are nicely appointed with really comfortable beds....I swear the best! This hotel is built into the side of a mountain accounting for its magnificent view of Charlotte Amalie and the harbor. We requested a roadside room which is the first floor because of mobility limitations .....multiple levels .....pool on one level, dining room/breakfast room another level, etc. Lisa, the young woman who works at the desk was more than happy to give us a ground floor room with a view to die for so that we would not have to navigate too many steps. The breakfast room is actually the dining room, with its lovely breezes blowing, ships pulling into the harbor, iguanas way beneath you on one of the levels that will eat the bread you throw (they are vegetarians) and Ella, the breakfast room lady that has been there forever as sweet and helpful and gracious as ever. Adam, the owner's son, will always help you out....like when your battery goes dead....more than happy to give you a jump. We are so happy that the Mafolie is in such good and loving hands...we had a great stay.

Because the hotel is on many levels, if mobility is an issue, make the staff aware.

On the down side, this hotel is located above the town and a few miles from the beach so we always have a rented car........it might get expensive using cabs....that would be a problem we didn't have. And it is a small hotel so there is no room service as such.

We ate in the restaurant which the view alone is worth the price. It is a tad expensive but the food is delicious and if you have a drink at the bar, you will enjoy chatting with Tiffany...whoops, forgot, she is moving to Alaska.....this island is full of the most interesting people.

To sum it up, this place is just great. A little story: They have a no pets policy here but if you go down 3 levels to the pool, there is a pussy cat with three legs named Tripod that has been living there ever since someone ran him over and left him. The folks here went out and rescued him, had to amputate a leg, and built him a little house on the pool area where he has been happily living for 3 years. He has learned to hop up two levels for treats from the restaurant and then return to relax in his home next to his pool!

Room Tip: Rooms on the ground floor are easy to navigate but can be noisy at night. Transportation is defini...

We stayed here coming and going to the BVI's. The views are spectacular and the food at dinner excellent. It is a taxi ride to town since it is on the hill.

The rooms are comfortable, especially the suites which have either a balcony or sitting room where you can view the harbor.

For the price can't be beat.

We stayed one night on our way to a sailing vacation. The Mafolie was unique and pleasant. we had 3 rooms, each different and with its own personality. nice pool and bar area and the view is phenomenal. The place was very clean and friendly. I would stay there again.

In a city that appears to have limited accommodation options, Mafolie is a breath of fresh air: amazing views, nice staff, and a lot of attention to details, both functional and aesthetic. The property is very comfortable and relaxing and there are interesting little artistic and botanic highlights and flourishes everywhere. The pool area is great and even the fast food served poolside is quite decent.

My only two criticisms of this hotel concern, first, the bad internet--you apparently have to sit in one particular area by the pool at a certain time to get wifi reception (though admittedly bad internet connections only help a person relax, which is why we were there in the first place!).

The other problem concerns the prices in the restaurant, which are much too high. Perhaps the ingredients for prepared food are outrageously expensive in the Virgin Islands, I don't know, or perhaps I'm spoiled living in a city that has great food at affordable prices (Toronto), but USD 32 for an only-good-but-not-jaw-dropping-amazing jambalaya? I can't help but think that management is gouging people simply because the view is fantastic (and it is) and because those staying at the hotel have no restaurant options (the hotel is located well away from the city centre, and a long way uphill of it).

We were very pleased to stay here in a room that overlooked the pool and the downtown area below. It's up the hill a little bit so the downtown area is a about 5 - 10 minutes away by taxi, but that provided a great vista to wake up to every morning and it is more or less centrally located to other attractions on the Island.

This isn't the Ritz, but we preferred this as the rooms were clean, spacious and had unique character. Restaurant was great and the staff was amazingly helpful. Chad, Lisa and Katya (hope I got that right) were all very knowledgeable about the area and willing to help us have a pleasant stay. Adam, the owner, even drove us up to a hiking spot in the area on a whim, so they are really willing to go the extra mile for their guests.

Room Tip: I've heard people complain about the traffic, but we didn't experience this as we had a room...

Good Day d g. This is Chad from the front desk. Thanks for the kind words! It was nice to meet you guys while you were here and it's always fun to give directions and suggestions to people who have an idea of what they are looking to experience -- i.e. the hiking trail down to Magan's Bay is a great experience rarely had by travelers.

So, thanks again! Give us a call when you need another life refresher.
