“WHAT A VIEW!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 15, 2012

Our last night was here after a week camping on St John. Had a great room overlooking the pool and the entire harbor down below. The pool was very nice and relaxing and the room very comfortable with a fridge and microwave. They serve a very nice little continental breakfast as well. Not easy to find. You see the sign for it but when you are coming from Megans Bay... you have gone too far.
Now, back to the view. WOW! Everywhere in the place has a great view.
Downtown Charlotte Amalie is a hot mess. This is a little oasis from all the hustle and bustle.

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Mafolie for one night following a week on St John, as we needed to catch an early flight out in the morning. We booked one of the better rooms, and while the accommodations were nothing fancy, they were absolutely fine for a night's sleep. As mentioned in other reviews, the view really is just incredible, and I would stay again for this alone. The staff were also very friendly and helpful with any queries or requests we had.

Room Tip: Opt for one of the deluxe rooms for a bit more comfort.

My friends and I recently went on a sailing trip around the Virgin Islands (check out Tara Vana - Rick and Miss Charters - they are the best) and needed to stay in St. Thomas for a night. I actually stayed two. I arrived late on Friday night and after checking in to my very basic, bare bones room, headed to the bar in hopes of finding some food. The desk agent was there along with a few guests and eventually the owner - if felt very friendly, safe and comfortable which is important for a single gal traveling alone before her friends arrived. The views are AMAZING from every room which more than makes up for any lacking in the accommodations. It's not the Marriott people! The restaurant is quite good and also has a surprisingly good wine selection.
We spent the next day lounging at the pool which, yes, is small, but again - that view! Laura took great care of us mixing cocktails and serving us poolside. Oh and they have two cats - one with only 3 legs called (aptly) Tripod. I happen to love cats and he bedded down in my room the last night.

If you're staying a couple nights at the front or back end of your vacation I would definitely recommend the Mafolie.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms on the corner - there is also one that had an entire front "patio"...

Well, where do you start? This hotel is a more of a bohemian type of hotel, which is good and not so good. The location is great as long as no one in your group is handicapped as it is all stairs, even to get into the units bathroom (which is very, very small). But the view is one of the best in all of St. Thomas. The hotel is old but clean, the crank out windows in our suite were broken off in the open position so the AC just barely kept the room cool, which was ok since it wasn't terribly hot, the TV didn't work, the window treatments were more like old rags.
The bed rattan frame felt like it was falling apart when we finally laid down and the mattress was one of the worst I ever (tried) to sleep on. The pool was clean but they were laying new tiles on the pool deck, so noisy. The restaurant service was fair and the food was just "ok" but don't order the crab cakes, they are horrible. YOUR IN THE CARRIBEAN SO IT IS WHAT IT IS : )

Room Tip: There is probably not a room with a bad view as all face Charlotte Amalie, but it might be a crap sh...

The Mafolie Hotel is a quaint place witha breathtaking view of Charlotte Amalie harbor. For those of us who travel for business on our own dime, it is a good value. It is clean and does have hot water (something a lot of Carribean Hotels lack on a regular basis). It is not a Marriot, nor does it pretend to be, but for those of us that want a decent accomodation at a good price, it is well worth staying. The staff went out of their way to address my requests and were very friendly. The bonus to this hotel is their restaurant ; the food was so well prepared and reasonable, that I passed for 3 nights taxiing to town. Continental bfast included at no charge.

We read good reviews on line and the hotel was said to have had upgrades done. NOT THE CASE! We arrived and were told to return later when our room was cleaned and ready. When we did return, we were taken to a dirty, unmade up room. Disgusting. After an apology from the clerk, we were shown to a room that was about 90 degrees with no air conditioning in the main area. This area had a beautiful view of the harbor but, it was so hot we couldn't even breathe. The bedroom had a wall air conditioner and no windows so, we had to sit in a room with no view in order to be comfortable. The bathroom was the smallest I have ever seen and was old and dirty. So disappointing. Everywhere we looked the hotel seemed old and shabby. The clerk bought us a round of drinks at the pool bar and when we got home we found our card had been charged for these!!! This hotel ruined our anniversary night. The only redeeming part of our stay was the beautiful dining room and delicious dinner.

We are sorry these guests did not have a favorable stay at the Mafolie Hotel. We are comfortable with the fact that a great majority of our guests do. Perhaps they were expecting one of our flagship hotels that cost 4 times as much. In addition there were some factual mistakes in their review. They were comped for two drinks at the pool bar and were not charged as they described. There WAS a $50 hold on their card initially which is released by us at check out. It is extremely rare for St. Thomas's temperature to be in the 90's as they describe and the front of their mini suite is basically all open arch windows with an ocean breeze blowing through. I would suggest that these travelers find accommodations other than small moderately priced Caribbean hotels.

So - this place has AMAZING panoramic views of St. Thomas and Charlotte Amalie Harbor. The Hotel also has a very nice restaurant and quaint pool, and probably best of all - locals are welcome to use the pool. It is a very nice gesture on their part.

Unfortunately, the owners do not seem to be taking the requisite care of the facilities, and certainly can be doing a better job with their existing amenities.

Nothing would make me happier than to remove this post and replace it with a glowing review when Mafolie gets back to its previous (or better) form.
