“Romance Island style”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2012

We stayed in this charming paradise for two nights. We arrived to fireworks over the bay with its nonpareil view. Our room felt tropical and spacious for the island. Clean and beautifully tiled. The pool will amaze you. Enjoy a cocktail while soaking up the sun and the view! The staff was very helpful with arranging transport.

We stayed at the Mafolie Hotel for one night while waiting for a plane the next day. I gave the hotel a decent rating because the staff was very nice and accomodating and the view was breathtaking. We stayed in St. John in a Villa on the water and it was nice to wrap up our trip in a Hotel with a view of the Carribean and surrounding islands. I hesitate to give it a better rating because it seems run down and there were these tiny bugs that looked like gnats on the surface of the dressers, otherwise room was clean, bed was ok, not great. Restaurant was good too.

If you want a peaceful stay, watching the Saint Thomas Harbor, this is the place. Staff is very attentive. They even can print your boarding pass. I had a great time. Hotel is located far enough from downtown but away from noises. If you do not like it. You should stay away. You need to take a taxi to go downtown.

I recommend hotel for a peaceful stay.

Room Tip: Hotel have complimentary transfers to downtown and Hagen Bay Beach. Ask for the schedule.

On our way to a sailing trip in the BVIs and on our way back we had the pleasure of staying at the Mafolie Hotel. The minute we arrived we were made to feel welcome and had an amazing time.
This little jewel of a boutique hotel had a million dollar view of Charlotte Amalie's harbor. Our room was immaculate and had air conditioning we didn't need because of the wonderful breezes. We even had a breakfast balcony for our morning coffee!
The staff is knowledgeable about the area and always went out of their way to answer questions. We ended up having some terrific adventures on their recommendations!
We ate dinner at the restaurant for the three evenings we were there and each meal was better than the last. Conch fritters, scallop purses, coconut snapper, snapper almondine, crab cakes and the best key lime pie over the entire trip are just some of the highlights. We even had the pleasure of meeting the chef who came out to check on our meal. The view is gorgeous.
The pool is wonderful and has a cozy bar with ice cold drinks and the best Carribbean Style Chicken Quesadilla imaginable.
The breakfast included in with room is terrific and has great coffee, muffins, fruits, juices and cereals. Perfect for everyone.
We will be going back again next year, and would strongly recommend this hotel to friends and
family.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 31, 2012 via mobile

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Mafolie for 5 days in July 2012.

The Pros:
(1) a great view of downtown, seaport and the bay;
(2) the staff is friendly and helpful;
(3) a daily free shuttle to Magens Bay at 10:30 am and a daily free shuttle back to the hotel from Magens Bay at 3:00 pm;
(4) a daily free shuttle to downtown Charlotte Amalie at 10:00 am, but there isn't a free shuttle that brings you back to the hotel from downtown;
(5) complimentary breakfast with a limited selection of items, from 7:30 am to 10:30 am;
(6) our room is spacious; and
(7) the pool is open all hours.

The Cons:
(1) It's 800 feet above sea level. Most people rent a car or call a taxi to travel between downtown and the hotel. There's no public transportation that travels between the hotel and downtown. If you walk, it will take 15 minutes to go to town (downhill) and 30 minutes to go back to the hotel (uphill). There are also no sidewalks, meaning you'll be walking very close to fast moving cars;
(2) The furniture in the room is dated, and the bathroom is very small, making using the toilet and showering uncomfortable; and
(3) There aren't any stores or many restaurants within walking distance from the hotel. The hotel does have a restaurant and we saw another restaurant about a 10-minute walk up the hill.

My girlfriends and I stayed here for 5 days in July (which was apparently rainy season). It's not your average hotel its more authentic. If you are looking for a Marriott feel, don't stay here. However, if you love amazing views, great food, friendly staff and a decent room - this is the place. We got a great discount through AARP and AAA and found that this place is THE place for views. We were pleasantly surprised by how amazing the dinner was. Breakfast was subpar (but free w. stay)... so we enjoyed bagels, cereal and english muffins each morning. We rented a car instead of taking taxi's or shuttles.. it allowed us to see more of the island and even head over to St. Johns two of the days. Great vacation we will all remember forever!

We booked this hotel through a deal on hotels.com but were not sure what to expect since the reviews are mixed. Here's the bottom line: views, views, views! The hotel is on the hills of Charlotte Amalie, about 10-15 min from downtown. The room we stayed in had amazing views of the town and bay and it overlooked the pool, we were in room 111. We recommend having a car to travel around the island and go out to eat since there are no places walking distance from the hotel. There is however a mini fridge and microwave in the room. If you dont have a car, a taxi would charge you $8 dollars to/from the airport and probably less to go downtown. The housekeeping was great and they kept the room clean and provided fresh towels everyday (might be a waste but it feels nice).
The staff is helpful and friendly.
The restaurant: we had heard so much about the restaurant at the hotel that were really looking forward to having a nice dinner there. The restaurant has the best view and it is very romantic. They have a full bar also overlooking the town and the bay. However we were not impressed with the food. For appetizers we ordered some of the specials: the mushroom soup was delicious and the Tuna was tasty. For entree we ordered the seafood linguini and the coconut red snapper after asking the waiter about the seafood linguini and if the shellfish in it was local. He assured us it was. The snapper was good but the shellfish in the linguini were definitely frozen and not good. We were disappointed with the food or maybe were expecting too much. At the end, you end up paying for the view. The hotel does give you a complimentary glass of wine or dessert with the purchase of a meal which was good.
Overall it was a good experience and would recommend this hotel.
