This hotel appears to be the product of a series of conversions of various apartment buildings or homes into a single unified business. Stairs go every which way, although mostly up, and there are no elevators. We rejected the room we were initially offered because it stank, faced into the steep hillside, and just looked incredibly gross. The second room was at the very top floor of the hotel and had a nice balcony overlooking the harbor. The sliding patio door barely worked and the "lock" was flimsy, but at least the view was decent. In general, the room was functional and didn't smell like the other room, but not up to basic $100/night US hotel standards. Had we been stuck with the first room (they charged our card at the time of the reservation!), there would have been a dispute.
The neighborhood is apparently a common problem with St Thomas real estate. The hotel is only 1.5 blocks from the heart of the crazy jewelry shopping district, but the towns character completely changes in that short distance. Burned out buildings and a couple local's night clubs surround the hotel. Due to the number of warnings and crime rate statistics, we chose not to walk the short distance at night, and instead wasted money on cab fares. I'm not sure that the alternatives are much better- we tried to book a room at Blackbeard's, but they have a 12-year old minimum on kids ("because the pools are dangerous"???). Maybe the green igauna? Be prepared to climb steps.
The staff was very friendly and seemed to sincerely want to help us, including loaning us their umbrella at one point. The included breakfast was simple but decent and was served to you on a veranda with a view that complemented the one from our room.
