“Sunset Beach of the Caribbean”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2012

Brings back memories of the old Sunset Beach near Cape Charles, VA. A time machine back to the 60s. Nothing fancy but, it was clean and relaxing. In some ways, run down. It does take some effort the get the sliding balcony door to move! And the doors below the sink tend to interfere with the mini-fridge door more than anything else. They're about to fall off anyway so, toss them. Coffee maker in the bathroom? Not the ideal location. It uses their filter packets so, don't bother taking your own coffee. No microwave.

The beach is rather small but not the least bit crowded. And the water couldn't be clearer. So clear that you can watch fish swim by if noone is in the water to scare them. It was a bit on the cool side but, once you jump in, it quickly feels quite comfortable. We were overlooking the bay so, the balcony was dark and cool in the morning. Which was a good thing. For a few hours in the afternoon, it becomes an oven! The balcony is small but just right for the two of us. However, it creates one heck of an echo. Maybe good for someone into karaoke!

The restaurant / bar was okay. The food was nothing special but the staff was great. Not a whole lot on the menu but something for everyone. There's a nice little bar at the beach access and the guys running the bar are great. On the topic of beach access, it is provided at the pool/bar/restaurant area only. No walkways between or through buildings. So, if you're waterfront, it's a great view but you're not gonna step out onto the beach.

There's a small shop across from the pool for postcards and such but, you won't find beer, tobacco (if you smoke) or food there or anywhere on the property. Closest thing is a hike down to the convenience store a mile or two away. One thing you will find at the shop is someone who can help arrange tours on the island(s). Snorkel, fish or whatever - just tell Bethany what you enjoy and she will hook you up. Oh, take your passports with you even if you're a U.S. citizen! We took a nice island-hopping / snorkeling trip and some of it was on British islands. Passports required.

If you want to get away and just hang at the resort - perfect place. On the other hand, you're not close to much of anything and will either use the taxis a lot or rent a car. Although, I wouldn't recommend renting a car on St Thomas. Your call. I've driven some difficult places and don't like giving up the freedom to explore but St Thomas - no. By the way, drive on the left and when crossing the street, look the other way for oncoming traffic. And when the cruise ships are in port, it will be VERY congested. They pretty much close the town when no ships are in. It becomes very quiet and also left me looking over my shoulder. We felt safe there but, at times, caution is advisable.

Since the resort is across the street from the airport runway, expect a lot of engine noise. Yea, at times it was annoying. For the most part, it was just background noise and just depends on the individual. Some complain about it and some just don't pay it any mind. My thoughts - don't worry about it.

Overall, we felt safe at Emerald Beach and enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: While WI-FI comes and goes, being near the bar or lobby may be the best places to connect (if WI-FI...

As a British virgin island snob, I wasn't expecting too much for my one night stay at emerald beach after a week on a sailboat in the bvi. But the atmosphere was great with a nice beach, not crowded (but sometimes the cruise ships drop people here're for a few hours), a fun bar with good drinks and burgers etc. The rooms were lovely and dinner at the restaurant very pleasant with good food. I almost felt like I was back in the bvi. There was a cute gift shop with a nice manager from the us and a nice clean pool. The planes taking off from the airport didn't really a bother us and they stopped at night. Security wise we were careful as I have known several people who have been mugged or broken into on st Thomas. I didn't
Take a walk alone on the beach in the early morning as there is a public beach at the far end. But with common sense. I think anyone could feel and be safe here.

My husband and I spent a week at the Emerald Beach Resort with my adult son and his girlfriend in mid January. I researched lodging choices for months before making a decision to stay here. It was the consensus that I made an excellent choice! The room was comfortable, clean and well appointed. The walk-out balcony facing the water was a huge bonus and picture postcard in terms of the view. The balcony had 2 chairs and a table and extended the living space for our party of 4. Our room was on the 3rd floor and it was absolutely beautiful! I would strongly recommend requesting a room on the 2nd or 3rd floors - as it provides for the best safety from beach goers and the best view.

The beds were very comfortable. Only watched TV once - so can't say much about that - but who wants to watch TV on this beautiful island anyway. The resort is everything that one would want when visiting the tropics. It is beautifully landscaped with gorgeous flowers, palms, and coconut trees throughout. The architecture screams tropical paradise around every corner and angle. Just lovely - everywhere you look is another photo opportunity.

The pool is large, clean and lovely. The food is expensive - and okay - not great. The best value is the breakfast buffet for 14.95 per person and all you can eat. Eggs, omelettes made to order, waffles, fruit, cereal, etc. We loaded up at breakfast and it held us all day. The Tiki Bar is fabulous. The best pina coladas I've had anywhere! And don't get me started on the Rum Punch. Wow! The bar tenders are also great. Real characters. Zach plays the best Reggae I've ever heard and I'm married to a "rasta" guy! The open air dining and drinking area is picturesque and overlooks turquoise water, hills, and breath-taking landscape. It was like being in a dream for 7 days!

I've read the negative reviews on TA and honestly can't understand them. Yes, it is right next to the airport. Plus is a short trip to and from the plane. Cons are there are planes that take off and land - but I wasn't' the least bit bothered by them. In terms of the staff being "rude or cold" that was mentioned by other reviewers, I certainly did NOT find this to be the case. I did notice certain "wealthy white" travelers being rude and cold to the staff - however - which may account for some of the reviewer's reactions. I am a social psychologist - and from what I can tell - the staff puts up with a lot of demanding and arrogant travelers - so who wouldn't have their "guard up" so to speak. If you are polite and smile - you will get that back in SPADES!

The Emerald Beach appears to be a haven for both romance and family. There were children about - but also couples and retirees. You can rent paddle boats and spend a glorious time out on the water as we did. The water is calm and beautiful. The feeling is laid back, casual, tropical and one feels like they are "away" from all the hustle and bustle of the island and traffic.

The rooms have a mini fridge and sink - but no microwave. The hotel does not offer a shuttle into town, but one can walk about 1/4 mile to the shuttle stop and grab the safari shuttle for 1 dollar that will take you around the island. Just be sure to plan your outing so that you are back by dark. We were going to rent a car - but after seeing the hectic nature of the traffic, we opted for the dollar shuttle and were glad we did. We took the shuttle to the grocery store (Pueblo Market) where we bought basics for the in room fridge.

Charlotte Amalie is a short ride away and offers ample shopping and restaurants. We loved it. Certain days, the cruise ships come in and unload thousands of tourists. We went to town on the day there were 7 ships at port - and it was still wonderful.

You can take the ferry over to St. Johns from Red Hook (also accessible from the dollar shuttle). It costs 6 bucks per person one way. We rented a jeep and toured the island. It was breath taking. The shopping on St. Johns is quite upscale and pretentious, for our blood. I much preferred Charlotte Amalie.

One word of caution to Priceline customers. We were hit with a 230.00 bill upon check in at the hotel - which they claim was not included in our package. Priceline stated all taxes and fees were included - but then WHAM! Not sure who to blame for this little surprise, but hey - what are you going to do?

If we were to ever return to St. Thomas, I wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else! The Emerald Beach is a jewel!

Room Tip: Request a room on the 2nd or 3rd floor. Beware, there are NO elevators.

Let me start by saying we usually stay at 5star resorts, however we decided to just get-away for a long type weekend.
1. We arrived at approx 12pm and could not check in till 4pm, the lady at the front desk was VERY nice and showed us where to store our luggage and get changed into our suits to hit the beach. ( can easliy save $50-100 in cab fare by walking to hotel )
We eventually checked in at 5p or so after getting off the beach, the beach was very very nice, not crowded at all.

The rooms were dated, however we knew this wasnt going to be a 5star resort when we booked it, the wifi worked perfect in the room, bar, and on the beach.

The TV only got minimal channels so if your a TV watcher = not good.

We stayed on the 3rd floor, beautiful view.

The resturant we just OK.
The bar was nearby and slightly above average.

Bad = plane noise, I have NO idea what these other people are talking about, when a 747 flys 400ft over your head on a quiet beach , YOUR HEAR IT !!!!! and when 10 planes a day fly over your head it becomes ANNOYING !!!

Bad = I noticed locals using the pool on Sunday, kinda trashy when your paying $250 + per night and people walk in off the street to use the pool.

Bad = FAR from red hook, where lots of good stuff is located including the water taxi to St. Johns. ( taxis get expensive )

All in all, a typical 3 star resort.

Room Tip: 3rd floor, was a beautiful view, however there are NO elevators.

We had a nice room in 2nd floor with balcony. Nice and clean, large room.
Perfect view to Lindberg Bay and the beach 1 meter from our balcony. The beach is nice and clean and very good for swimming, not crowded as other beaches on St. Thomas. The hotel is in walking distance from the airport and little noice for arrival/departure flights, but you get used to it. The atmosphere at the hotel was nice and relaxing. We will definately go back when visit St. Thomas again.
There was a small shopping center in walking distance, but you need taxi to go down town.

Room Tip: 2nd floor section on end of the beach, big nice rooms

A gorgeous location on a beautiful island generally filled with welcoming people. Unfortunately, the Emerald Bay Best Western was not a good reflection of St. Thomas. The first five days there were OK, although the room was not in good shape (dripping utility sink, refrigerator barely cooling, and bathroom fan broken, broken luggage rack, and so on). The last five days we were there were awful with sporadic toilet functioning and no water. The front desk people were curt and generally unresponsive, and we never got any apologies from the managerial staff for a vacation of inconveniences. Five days of not knowing whether your toilet will flush or whether you can take a shower was not our idea of a relaxing vacation in paradise. We understand there are “water problems” on the island, but everywhere else we went on St. Thomas the water was functioning. Book here only if you like bailing out toilets (if, in fact, there is water running) and dealing with unsmiling, surly front desk staff.

This would have been an ok spot for $100 a night. At $300 it was awful. Advertised wifi didn't work in the room. Front desk said to use the Ethernet cable -- of course that's not much help with an iPad or iPhone. It also couldnt be located. Tech came to room and had to move the bed to find it, finally got it working on laptop. Neither the tv or air conditioning worked. Another hotel tech was there fast to repair and both turned out to be just programming. The tv remote however wouldn't work right -- good thing they've receives only 6 channels. I told front desk of all these issues and end of the trip and they just shrugged -- no comment to let management know, no offer to repair or compensate. Ate dinner atbtheirnrestaurant, food was poor quality but priced very high again -- seems to be a theme here. For $300 a night, I expect everything in the room to work including the advertised wifi. Only stay here if you have to, not a good spot.

Room Tip: Close to airport and nice beach
