“We'll be back”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2007

The Galleon House is a great value and has great staff. My husband and I stayed there last year for our first visit to the USVI and we are heading back this year.

They are not the Ritz Carlton...and don't want to be and that's what we like. For the price, you get what you pay for. You're not going to get a luxurious, spacious room. We stayed in two different rooms. One was a little older and it was fine, again for the price it is what I expected. It was a clean room however. The other room was just remodeled and it was very nice.

The staff was awesome. We got perfect directions from the airport. They made our stay wonderful and I felt they would do just about anything to make us happy. Plus, breakfast is included in the rate and it's just the right amount of food to get you going in the morning. And the coffee was great too!

Yes, it's not in the best part of town, but like any big city, it has bad areas. You just have to be smart. It's not paradise everywhere down there! I never felt like I was in danger, but again, you just have to use common sense.

My boyfriend and I got stranded in St Thomas after our flight got cancelled. The place we usually stay was booked up so as a last resort we had to stay at the Galleon house. Lets start with the hike up the stairs just to get to the lobby. If you are not in shape and/or have lots of luggage this is not the place for you. Next is the reception area also known as the smoking lounge/ stray cat hang out. Next are more steps to your room. Then you set your things down and turn on this small window A/C which barely cooled the room after being on for 12 hours. To help cool the room there is a ceiling fan which has not been dusted since Blackbeard was there. You then notice the mosquitoes and smashed mosquitoes that are on the walls (at that point we wanted to leave but they take payment in advance). In the bathoom is a window with a screen with paper taped over the holes. After finally accepting the fact that we have no other choice but to stay we turn on our laptop to find absolutely no service in our room and are forced to go on dialup and are charged $1.50 per 800# by Galleon. Oh and if you do get signal the internet is not free. The place is tolerable for a night if you can get a good price. We paid $140 for 1 night which is about $60 over what its worth. If you are looking for a BNB on St Thomas keep looking, there are far better values out there.

Steps!!, Steps!! And More Steps!!
This hotel has beautiful views from the rooms. Rooms were very clean, but staff offered no assistance with the baggage to your room. Good rates.
Easy walk to shopping and restaurants, although you might want to take a taxi back to the hotel at night.
Herve ( one of St. Thomas's best restaurants) is next door.

We got lost driving from the airport and ended up on Back St at dark...a bit scarey. There are few street signs in Charlotte Amalie. We were told, "Well, Mon, if you have lived here all your life, you know where everyting is!" This bed and breakfast is located on a hill in the middle of town. It has a nice deck with view at breakfast, which was nice as there was NO window in our room! We stayed here for the two nights before going to the timeshare for our week. We just happened to be there when there was a big festival, Magic on Main St, their Christmas shopping kick off. It was fun to see and the steel pan bands and eat thier foods at booths in the park less than a block away.
The room was ok for our purpose - a cheap place in mid town for two nights - but it isn't where you would want to stay for your whole vacation.

First the good: Probably one of the most reasonably priced B&Bs in the area. Surprisingly the A/C worked. The view from the outdoor lobby/porch/breakfast area is ok. Breakfast was fresh, well prepared and ok. The innkeepers are polite and try hard. Close to the "shopping" district, if that's what you're there for. Nice, clean, cool, intimate swimming pool, great after a rough day of shopping/touring, or maybe instead of. The sheets were clean.

Now the bad: You get what you pay for! My room was a Mosquito Safari. The walls had little blood splats all-over probably from past, late-night mosquito hunts and more arrived each night. Stairs, Stairs and more Stairs!! If you have issues climbing steps then Look Elsewhere! Cats in the lobby/porch/dining area were ok by me, but mangy. Last but not least, I left my iPod in the room. It was "not found".

To sum up: Not great, but I've stayed in worse places. Charlotte-Amalie is not a vacation destination, it's a cruise-ship port-of-call, shopping day-trip. If you want a place to flop overnight, if you are not overly particular and if you are very careful guarding your belongings, it's OK. If you want high-quality B&B, look elsewhere. You get what you pay for!

  • Liked — complimentary breakfast, working A/C, clean sheets.
  • Disliked — mosquitos, stairs, stairs, stairs. my iPod disappeared.
  • Tips/Secrets — Maps of St. Thomas/Charlotte Amalie for planning are rare. Plan, research and book before you go.

just got back from a night stay at galleon house. I was skeptical at first because the price was so reasonable. we fell in love with the inn, the people, the view (request room if you want a great view of harbor and city all in one). sandy and martha are wonderful, breakfast was great. location , like anywhere else you go as a tourist, was safe if you use your head. walking distance to downtown. we have been a lot of places, this is an inn we will look forward to going back. good job folks!

This place should be called the gallows hotel, not the galleon. It's in a sketchy part of town, with shady characters lurking in the area. I would not feel safe walking outside the gates of this hotel after dark.
The walls of the rooms are thin, so you can hear everything in the next room. Not a lot of privacy. On a positive note, the WIFI Internet connection is great!! This hotel is for backpackers... or those looking for an adventure.
