St. Thomas

3 of 5 stars
Washington, DC

St. Thomas is a nice place...although you may fall short if you are not from the Cruise liners most shops will not open unless a liner is docked. There are limited places to dine for breakfast or local if you stay at a local resort.

Overall the beaches are beautiful. My next bet will be to stay at a highend location with an all-inclusive package.

St. John has beauty area beaches as well. We boarded a cargo boat and travel the island by motocross bike which was pretty cool.

Alot has been said about the bad manners and hostility of the people of St Thomas and bad attitudes and service. I do not discount these assesments but found many of the folks here to be pretty cool- Remember these people have alot of pride and are highly racially conscious- they probably resent just a little the sunburned white invaders who invade their island, drive badly and treat them like servants. Try to address everyone here in an egalitarian and extra respectful manner- you may get further.

The Shipwrecked Saloon and Green House are great beer and burger places with good service and a lively atmosphere. The Green House has two for one drink specials and the Shipwrecked has massive burgers and actually has beer on tap, an anomaly in the VI.

For beaches, Megans bay was the most beautiful and Coki beach has the best snorkeling in St Thomas (and it's free). Trunk Bay in St John is supposedly the "most beautiful beach in the world", but that has the added hassle and expense of a slow and unreliable water ferry.

A great honeymoon!

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon in the Virgin Islands. St. Thomas was our first stop at the Marriott Frenchman's Reef (the hotel section); which we liked better than the villas (didn't think it was worth the extra money). The hotel recommended Shipwreck Tavern for dinner, which I think was the best restaurant we ate at during the entire trip and affordable. The manager stopped by our table when our appetizer didn't come out in a timely fashion and was more than accommodating. Definately try the onion rings and the chicken fingers. The salad and burger was excellent too. Highly recommend for lunch or dinner. Duffy's was also an excellent stop for Mahi Mahi Love Tacos...no atmosphere but great, affordable food.

Our only complaint about the island is that you are forced to take taxis everywhere; there are NO sidewalks, so its not an opinion. The taxis tried to tell us that there are no rental cars available (and there were) so beware of the taxis, not exactly the most honest people.

VIsit Magen's Bay...the best beach in St. Thomas.

We went in June; it was quite muggy; not quite used to the humidity. The water was really warm. The trip to St. John was well worth it; the snorkeling was fun. We saw lots of fish and a couple of stingrays. Not much to do if you like to stay active. When it gets dark, the mosquitos come out in the billions. Beautiful place; picture perfect, however.

If you are going to Virgin Islands, stay on St. John's

Just got back from St. Thomas- have a lot to share if anyone needs info. My best advice is if you are traveling to the Virgin Islands, stay on ST. JOHN'S! It was the higlight of the trip. BE CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT YOU READ WHEN IT COMES TO VILLAS. Ours was not what we thought it was going to be and we paid top dollar. St. John's is the place to go.
