Owner description: Built in Essex, England in 1938, of select Burmese teak, English oak and bronze, Catania was designed in the nautical style of the day... long and lean. Exceptional English shipwrights constructed her with awesome attention to detail. Details such as dovetail joints and hand lathed bronze screws that you do not see in modern boats. She is uniquely one of a kind and is a "Yacht" in the truest sense of the word. She is graceful, elegant and swift, and her extraordinary lines belie her length of 40 feet. In 2010 Catania began a complete overhaul under the watchful eye of Ocean Petersen. With her restoration complete, she is ready to sail on a moments notice. As stunning as ever, with nostalgic lines, beautiful teak cockpit and accents, Catania is the definition of classic elegance. Anchored in the clear waters of St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, she is available to charter for up to six guests. Treat yourself to an unforgettable sail aboard the Classic Wooden Yacht Catania.

“Amazing Day with Ocean and Ire!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2014

Thank you so much Ocean for an amazing day in St.Thomas with you're amazing charter. Ocean and Ire gave us an entirely different look at St.Thomas with a view we haven't seen before. Due to our own fault with the time difference, we showed up exceptionally late. None the less, Ocean and Ire spared us nothing less then a spectacular sail . They made sure we had a full, fun and friendly experience with great food and excellent cocktails ;) They are very conscious of safety and will not over crowd the boat more than its maximum of 6 guests. Although small, it's an assurance of comfort and safety. I am making sure that other staff and crew members that work with Carnival know about this company. Ocean has a variety of different packages so it could work for friends, families and lovers alike. They were very accommodating with our tight cruise ship schedule. I have family coming to sail around the holidays and I am definitely looking fwd to coming back for the day. This is an experience not to be missed!

“Fantastic time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2014 via mobile

I work as an entertainer on a cruise ship. A group of friends and I chartered this company for the afternoon on a day off. For starters, we mixed up our time zone with local time when we made our booking. Couple that with our cruise ship docking late, we ended up being late by almost 3 hours. Ocean (the captain) was more than understanding and reassured us of his forgiveness for our mistake. Ocean and his crew (his longtime friend Ire) were superior hosts. The sailing was smooth, complete with guided snorkel, all you can eat and drink (real food btw), and the guys were full of cool info about the area. They accommodated our frustratingly tight schedule and made our day fantastic. I would recommend them to literally everyone who was interested in a day of sailing. The price was fair, and even included a discount for us due to the fact the we couldn't stay the entire day. Thanks for a killer memory!

“Best Excursion We've Ever Done”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 9, 2014

We just returned home from an 8 day Eastern Caribbean cruise on the Norwegian EPIC.

St. Thomas was one of our ports of call. We had a 3 hour or so time slot booked with Catania Charters which was to run from 9AM - Noonish.

We were off the EPIC and on a cab by 8:30. The cab then proceeded to take an HOUR for us to get to the American Yacht Harbor Marina from the cruise port. This made us 30 minutes late. WARNING: Book extra time when taking a taxi to get to the marina. The taxi's are terrible at getting you to where you need to be in a timely manner.

Captain Ocean was waiting for us at dock A where we jumped into a tender and cruised on over to Ocean's amazing sail boat. There we met Ray, Ocean's good friend and helper and settled in for a morning to remember.

Since we were 30 minutes behind schedule, we immediately set sale to St Johns with Ocean and Ray catching us up on how the morning would go for us and what we'd be doing. Within minutes of setting sail we had cocktails in hand and were on the high seas!

We immediately clicked socially with Ocean and Ray. Within 10 minutes we were talking about all sorts of topics ranging from historics of the VI's to how things are going in the VI's presently.

We hit some high seas(10ft?) and couldn't get enough of it. You feel really safe with Ocean and Ray. They are so experienced, especially Ocean, that you feel safe and comfortable the entire time.

We snorkeled at St Johns checking out sea turtles, urchins, and some amazing fish. Ray lead us on that part of the tour. He'd deep dive to point out various sea creatures and giving very thorough and detailed explanations of each. Make sure to bring an underwater camera for this!

When we were done with our snorkeling we sailed the sea for the remainder of our morning knocking back beer after beer chatting about everything under the sun with our new friends Ocean and Ray.

We were supposed to wrap up around noon but Ocean was gracious enough to extend the time slot until 12:45 since we were late. That was such a nice gesture.

We'll be coming back to St Thomas/St John to do a full day on the seas with Catania Charters. Ocean mentioned checking our Concordia on St John which is what we'll do the next time around.

Thanks so very much to Ocean and Ray for giving us our first time sailing at sea the best experience we could of ever asked for.

“Amazing vintage boat, awesome experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2014

After a nearly a week of exciting and fun activates on St Thomas and St John it was hard to imagine doing anything that might top what had already been done. That of course was before we met Captain Ocean and his beautiful wooden sloop, the Catania.

We had arranged to do the private 2-hour sunset charter which we did mostly via email and very simple arrange. We arrived at the Redhook docks in the late afternoon and we greeted by Ocean. He helped us aboard a small Zodiac which took us our to where the Catania was moored. This boat is hands down one of the most beautiful and unique vessels I have ever come across. The 40-foot teak and oak sloop make you feel like you are stepping back in time.

From the moment we stepped onto her deck, Ocean along with his mate Kim, made us feel right at home. Kim filled our cups with rum and champagne cocktails as Ocean sailed us out of Redhook Bay to the open sea between St Thomas and St John. I will say we picked the perfect evening to go out. The seas were not very rough and there was a nice bit of wind which made for good sailing.

As we made our way out into open water, Ocean talked about the history of the Virgin Islands, pointed out interesting landmarks, and explained the geography of the area. On the return trip back into Redhook we sailed toward the setting sun which was so picturesque as it sunk down below the mountainous peaks of St Thomas.

In all the experience was amazingly unique and special. It was a wonderful way to finish up our trip before heading back to the snow and ice of the Mid-Atlantic. When we return to St Thomas I have a feeling we will be reaching out to Ocean again. He and Kim were both really fantastic. I highly recommend if you have time schedule a trip on the Catania. If you want to make it even more special do the sunset cruise.

“The best day of our vacation, hands down.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 4, 2014

We had the opportunity to sail with Captain Ocean and his first mate Ray for half a day while visiting St. Thomas last week. This excursion truly exceeded our expectations! We are two couples in their early 40’s along with one set of parents in their early 70’s. We took a taxi from the Crown Bay dock to the Red Hook Marina, which took about 30 minutes due to traffic (make sure you factor in the difference between ship’s time and local time so you don’t arrive late like we almost did!) Once we got there, Ocean helped us into the dinghy and escorted us to the Catania, where we met Ray and received our drinks of choice. Two of us tend to get motion sick, so Ocean steered us away from rough waters and Ray distracted us with stories until we reached Honeymoon Beach.

The parents were quite happy to hang out on the yacht with Ocean, especially once he put the shade up, but the rest of us went on a personal snorkeling tour guided by Ray. He is incredibly knowledgeable about all of the fish and other sea life, and pointed out a lot of things we would have passed right over on our own; the highlights included Cecil the sea turtle and Barry the barracuda. The rest of the afternoon was spent sailing and enjoying the amazing scenery of St. Thomas with a painkiller or Coors Light in hand and lots of fun and laughter… before long, Dad was trying to convince Captain Ocean to take him on as the new first mate! If you are thinking of booking a sail in St. Thomas, you can’t go wrong with Catania Charters. These guys are courteous, skilled, entertaining... they have earned every one of these glowing reviews. Thank you, Ocean and Ray, for a day we will never forget!
