“A very helpful library; genealogy takes time so allow plenty of extra.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2011

The Caribbean Genealogy Library, as its name implies, is a library to research your Caribbean family history. The folks that have worked with me there and remotely are very helpful and patient and they have lots of good resources there, many of which are only at this library. We had a pretty extended power outage one of the 2 days I was at the library which I understand is common on island so I would suggest planning on spending a day or days there. There's a nice restaurant, Randy's Bistro, close by which is nice when you need a break for lunch. Know specifically what you want to research, bring your notes, paper, writing instrument, and patience. I wish I could have spent much more time there. (note: I visited in about May'10 but TripAdvisor's date choices didn't go back that far.) The people that staff the library are volunteers, the library naturally has operating expenses, and membership gets you unlimited access to the library and its resources for a year so you really ought to become a member whether or not you get to visit the library in person.

“A treasure of information at Caribbean Genealogy Library”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2011

A month ago, scheduled to attend a medical seminar in St. Thomas, US-VI, my wife and I started a trip, my first ever there, that will turn into one of the most significant, meaningful spiritual and cultural journeys of my life.
During those 6 days, my attention was utterly absorbed by the "duty of memory" ("devoir de memoire") as we, Haitians, are commemorating the centennial of the death of one of our most illustrious ancestors, Mr. Anténor Firmin, who lives his last days in exile in the hospitable island of St Thomas.
Soon I was able to reach Mr. Myron Jackson, Retired Head of Virgin Islands State Historic Preservation Office, he readily invited us to pay a visit to the Caribbean Genealogy Library to find answers to our quests.
Wasn't it a pleasant surprise indeed to discover on their microfilm library all the information I was wishing for...the newspapers of that time with the obituaries, the census of the citizens, neighborhood by neighborhood etc. with the expert help of the attendants, Rob and Lisa.
It was so enthralling to discover how much Haiti is part of that island history, how gracious our neighbors are, and how much they care to know about Haiti.
We will certainly share our experience with whoever cares to know their past...which may help them understand better their present.
We definitely need to develop more cultural bridges between St.Thomas and Haiti, and it seems like my journey just started.

Cordially,

Charles RENE, MD

“great way to spend the afternoon”

I was happy to find Caribbean Genealogy Library. Close to the cruise ship dock and air conditioned. I spent some time on Ancestry.com and looked at the books.
