“Home Sweet Home!”

Recently, my wife and I were back in St. Thomas for a few days before heading over to Tortola for a bareboat charter.

When we lived in St. Thomas, we lived in the Serenity Cottage that over looks the Secret Harbor Resort & bay. The water is clear and you often see turtles and fish and sometimes deer will run along the edge of the property. Further on the horizon, you'll see St. Croix. At night, you have the beautiful glow of cruise ships as they leave Charlotte Amalie for Caribbean destinations. To the right you could see Veiquez, Puerto Rico's famed island and other islands. Overall a lovely place to call home with awesome views.

Now, with it's recent renovation, the entire Paradise Cove is a paradise for travelers that want to find a budget conscious, out of the way place to stay. Everything is wonderfully clean and new. We were given a tour of the efficiency apartments by Danielle, the upbeat friendly manager. After seeing the changes they made, these are truly the best kept secret and value in lodging in St. Thomas. They are large with magnificent views and very comfy... everything new.

We highly recommend Danielle and the entire Paradise Cove complex. Now that they've opened the internet cafe, I really don't think you can find a better place to stay. This mini-resort has it all and, at the right price.

Room Tip: Honestly, there are no bad views from any room. The pool area is perfect for hanging out and the WiF...

My husband and I were on St Thomas island for two weeks and loved every minute. We stayed at two different hotels and must say we liked the less expensive one far better. We stayed at the Ritz Carlton first and it was an OK experience only. We feel we overpaid for what we got there. Then we were blessed enough to find the little jewel Paradise Cove. WOW, what a place. First: the views – second to none. The bay it overlooks (don’t recall the name) is so blue and clear it took my breath away every time we walked onto our balcony. And the great wind every night was a special bonus. The staff (especially dear, sweet Laura) was superior and went far out of their way for us regardless of what we needed at any time. The room was spacious, clean, very comfortable and a tremendous value. As I said, this one is a jewel and we will be back. I think we have found a home away from home and can’t wait to return.

My husband and I were looking to squeeze in a quick getaway before the holidays since I was able to find time off (I'm a nurse and time off is hard to come by!). We could only go for 4 nights and didn't want to break the bank, someone recommended St Thomas/St John. This was our first trip there. I picked Paradise Cove because of the Trip Advisor reviews, the price, and proximity to Red Hook and the St John ferry. Once we got there we realized most people stay on St. John, but Paradise Cove was a wonderful budget option. We spent two days at St John, and we ended up really enjoying the Secret Harbor beach right down the road from Paradise Cove in St Thomas as well. I think in the future we would love to come back for longer and stay on St John with a large group of family (a lot of people seemed to be doing that), but we really enjoyed our stay at Paradise Cove. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Pros: The view from Paradise Cove is SPECTACULAR. Also it is within walking distance of Secret Harbor beach, which has wonderful snorkeling and is very calm. The bar there is pretty good too (I liked the ahi tuna nachos, although a little pricey). We loved floating around in the calm water with a drink in hand, just enjoying the views and the wildlife. Paradise cove also has a pool, even though we never used it. We preferred snorkeling at the beaches. And you can't beat the price. We payed $125 a night for the Serenity Studio, which allowed us to spend our money at nice restaurants and to go sailing one day. We would definitely recommend sailing out of Red Hook with Charlie and Josh on the Serenity! (see my other review). We went at the beginning of December, which is considered the off season, so it was not crowded. We never saw another guest at Paradise Cove actually. We arrived, got out of the taxi and someone came out, handed us a key, and walked us to our room. No paperwork, it was great. When we checked out we just handed our key in and they billed the credit card I had given over the phone. Very hassle free. They even let us check out late at 2:30pm since our flight didn't leave until 5:45pm. This allowed us to go to the beach and then shower afterwards on our last day.

Cons: Our room was adequate and perfect for what we needed and wanted to pay for, but it was not very glamorous. There always seemed to be mosquitoes, we flew home with our legs covered in bites. The shower was about 2 feet by 2 feet and the water always seemed to be shooting straight out of it. At first I was annoyed there was no hair dryer in the room, but then I just stopped caring and let my hair air dry :) The first night at 4am the alarm went off and this clock on the wall kept ticking so loudly, but I just unplugged it and took the batteries out. I wanted to keep the windows open and hear the ocean at night, but it was a little too hot to sleep comfortably, so we kept the window a/c unit on which drowned out the ocean sounds. The ceiling fan in the room provides a nice breeze as well. I know these seem like little petty things, and we got over them quickly. I think if we had booked the larger Serenity Cottage, which was more than we wanted to pay, we wouldn't have had some of these issues. So in the end we were very happy with our choice. The front porch was small and had a palm tree blocking the view, so we hiked down the path to the water to look at the view. We needed a wine opener one night, and the office was closed, so we got it the next morning when it opened at 9am. We never used the kitchen, except to store beer and wine in the fridge, we preferred to eat our meals at nearby restaurants.

One thing I would recommend is to rent a car. We did not because I thought since Paradise cove is only 0.8 miles from Red Hook we could walk. But the road is extremely hilly with absolutely no shoulder, cars drive by really fast and get annoyed when they have to slow down for walkers. Strangers would offer to pick us up when we were walking, telling us it wasn't safe to walk. It was sometimes difficult to convince a taxi to come to Paradise cove to pick you up, we tried walking down to Secret Harbor (that walk is relatively safe) but there usually wasn't a taxi waiting there. I'm not sure how safe I would have felt driving, since the roads are steep, narrow, and you drive on the left, but at least we would have felt more mobile. We were very dependent upon taxis, which there is no shortage of but they prefer to take multiple parties since they can make more money that way. Taxis charge a flat rate per person.

What a wonderful place! Paradise Cove was just what we were looking for, and more! The rooms were great, Danielle was accommodating and informative, and the whole place just had a beautiful vibe. We slept with the blinds open, overlooking the ocean, so we were up and down with the sun. There are beautiful flamboyant trees across the property, and it is just far enough away from town that you really feel like you are in your own private paradise. The location is wonderful as well. We loved our daily walks to Secret Harbor for snorkeling and hanging out at the beach. We went during a lower season, so there was tons of space on the beach to relax. Snorkeling is amazing here as well. Danielle provided numbers for cabs, but it was just as nice to hike down the hill and grab one from in front of Secret Harbor. If you were lucky, you might even manage to share a cab and save some cash.
I cannot say enough good things about this place! But I will say one more: if you are interested in scuba diving, you HAVE to book the Cabana-dive package. It is a wonderful deal, a FANTASTIC room, and you get hooked up with a phenomenal dive shop (Aqua Action). If you are thinking about St. Thomas- go to Paradise Cove!!!

Room Tip: For a couple, get the Cabana!!!

We stayed in the Serenity cottage. It was very private. The manager was helpful. The owner was very pleasant. The snorkeling from the property was great!

The view from any unit on the natural hillside is just spectacular. The snorkeling in from of the property was better than most locations we experienced on St John. Danielle could not have been nicer or more accomodating. When a cab was not available she very gladly drove us to the store for provisions in the company golf cart. My young daughter was thrilled. The breezes at night coupled with the ceiling fan provided perfect sleeping conditions without the whine and artificial temperatures of AC (which is available if desired). The sea air coming off of the cove gets filtered through the lush tropical vegetation and passes into your room with a light fruity herb scent that you have to experience to fully appreciate. We awoke every morning refreshed and excited to get back outside for more adventure. The nature walk down to the water is the perfect way to start every day. A short walk a way is Secret Harbor where I had the world's best fish tacos with ice cold beer on our first day. Make sure you save at least one day for a power boat excursion. We chose Lion in the Sun with Capt Rick and marked the experience as the best day of our vacation.
The full kitchens are a great way to make a vacation more affordable. Local markets are reasonable and well stocked. No resaurant offers a better view than the balconies so supper or lunch is always a pleasure when prepared in the unit's kitchen. We bought fresh fish and made awesome meals. This will be a repeat location for us next time we visit St Thomas.

We had an incredible time! Everything stated in the description is true. Breathtaking view above the water with no properties below. Private - we spent the entire week with the windows and curtains wide open allowing us to appreciate the gorgeous view of the ocean and the gentle breeze. Short walk to Secret Harbor which has a beautiful reef and great food! We're glad we rented a car and were able to visit other beaches, but you certainly could be happy walking to Secret Harbor and Red Hook. We walked down to the Ritz, and I was very happy to leave the long lines of chaise loungers and busy pools for my private condo!! (We had the pool to ourselves each time we went in!) Danielle was very helpful and was always ready to help and give great advice!!
