I am a very particular diver- extraordinarily hesitant, reluctant, and cautious when I dive, and as a result, I am fairly picky with whom I choose to dive. We have gone to St. John for three years now. The first two years, we dove with another company, and had some pretty bad experiences. This year, I told my dad that I did not want to dive at all this vacation. After reading some of these reviews he decided to sign us up to dive with Patagon anyways. First of all, there is a limit of only 6 divers on the boat in addition to the dive masters. We were lucky, on the three different diving days we had consecutively three, four, and then five divers. Each dive was terrific!!!
From the first hour of the first day, we realized that we were in for a very different experience. My dad and I both forgot our wetsuits. They gave us ones for the week to borrow without charge. On each of the dives, one of the dive masters, Lance, pointed out lots of life, including some very small shrimp and crabs that we would have easily missed.
What really impressed me was the second day we dove. We were supposed to go out to see a wreck, but the captain of the boat decided the wind was too strong and the seas were too high. He changed plans to take us to a wall. When we neared the wall site, the sea again got rough, and instead of continuing on to dive in the rough seas, we turned around and were taken to a protected site closer to the resort. This did NOT happen when we went to dive the Rhone two years ago- boy was that a terrifying experience. At Patagon, the masters made sure that everyone was absolutely comfortable with the dive site before letting anyone get into the water, which was something I had never experienced before. On the third day the seas were calmer and we got to see the wreck, as promised. Overall, the diving was great, and the crew and dive masters were even better than that.
To really show how great these people are, after our last dive, my dad left his drybag at the resort where Patagon is located. Since we were leaving the island the next day, Brian (the captain) brought the drybag to our hotel himself- he didn't even call to ask if we wanted to pick it up. The service that Patagon has matches if not surpasses the wonderful diving experience they provided for us. Something we are looking forward to again next year.
