“Extra details on Bluebeard's Beach Resort, St Thomas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

Extra info, and the good reviews are far closer to what's really accurate than the less favorable ones. We've stayed there twice, time share exchanges, but have gone to the beach there and eaten there many times. There is a gated entrance. There is free parking next to the tennis courts. You and your car are safe. They take care of many stray cats, with food, water and shelter. This keeps mice away from the resort and affords safety to the poor animals. This also keeps the cats in their own area, away from the resort. Very smart management practices. I've seen rats on site at several restaurants, but not here. Everywhere on this island, resort tax and energy surcharges are added. Have never seen more than about 12.00/day for energy, per unit, not per person. Tax is easily 17-18%/day per unit, but it's also that rate at various resorts and hotel along the NC and SC coasts. Yes, watch your bills, and carry the reservation sheets with you, if you've cked in under II, RCI, or for ex. Under a resort booking agent like Fairfield, Allegro, GoGo, etc. if that paper shows your energy surcharge or taxes are included, they cannot double bill you. The first time we stayed, about 7 yrs ago, we did have to argue about the surcharges, and they were fixed. We believe the mgt and front desk practices have changed since then. Main thing: treat people like you want to be treated, especially here at these wonderful, small resorts. Tip, even if it's just a dollar or two. Some of the kindest people we have met at Bluebeard's are the gatekeepers, and the other service fols, as well as the bar area folks and the servers. The buffets Bluebeard's does a few times per week, are especially good food and good values. Instead of going on a 15 or 16 dollar cab ride, see if they have a shuttle to town, to the Marriott, or hitch a ride when someone's leaving at the end of their shift, and tip. If driving or taking a cab, go left out of Bluebeard's, go to the stop sign, maybe one mile or less. Turn left to go to the Marriott. Go into the first turn-in, Frenchman's Cove. Tell the guard at the gate you're getting off at the Sunset Cafe. It's not cheap, but the food and salad's are great, there's 2/1 Happy Hour every night, and the fish tacos are wonderful. Big ones, 2 or 3 for 14.95. There's the pool, the beach, bathrooms. Live music several nights a wk. nice servers, nice atmosphere. One more tip for Staying at Bluebeard's: if you often have to get up at night to go to the bathroom, tell them in advance and when you ck in, you need the set up with a bathroom on the same level as a bed or a good pullout bed, it might be a sofa bed. I loved the set up in the 3-level condo on the middle level. Beautiful, great CD player and speakers, great deck and view from every unit. Now, at age 60, with asthma problems, knee problems, and getting up many times at night, I couldn't stay on the top floor and go down 20 steps to the living room, then maybe 4 into the bathroom. I'd never make it or would fall. This is the kind of place you don't see anymore. Come in before dark, so you can get the cab to stop at the market in Havensight, which is before you get to Bluebeard's. it's an expensive, but incredible mkt. lots of fresh deli heats, great chicken salad and egg salad, homemade breads, tons of sweets, wine, beer, chocolates, and anything you need for the first few days. Get your chees in the area with the milk and butter. Great Gouda. Buy fish only here or at the Food Center, on the left, just before Red Hook. Do not buy fish from local vendors or mkts, due to a parasite found in fish in local waters. Bad tummy or weak tummy, drink bottled water. The water never bothered us here, but it's better to be safe than sorry. Like the other man said, if you want the Ritz, stay at the Ritz. This hotel is one of the best values on the island and has a great beach. Bugs come out near dusk. Bring bug spray and keep screen doors shut on decks. Bring coffee, tea bags, creamer, Psedofed,, aspirin, etc, from home. It's all very expensive on STT, especially ladies' personal products. Shuttles often pull in here to drop off people. They want your business. Give the gate guy or front desk host some money to call you when they arrive and get the driver to wait for you. Get the card with cell no from the person who brings you from the airport. Enjoy!

Room Tip: See above and call ahead, as well as email.

“love it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

what we love...smaller resort, all renovated rooms this year, awesome pool bar workers, beach chairs always available, hamocks(soooo comfy), great residential area for walks, quiet and closer to town than most resorts.

We stayed in a loft. The 2nd building from the beach. Beautiful ocean view. Nice king bed. Everything was clean. Kitchen was great. Large coffee cups....yea! Everything in the kitchen was new. The living room/kitchen area is small. I would NOT want more than 2 people in these units.

what we wish....for a restaurant to be on sight, rentals for snorkel gear and kayacks to be less expensive! It was cheaper on st.John to rent them.

must....rent a car. We had a car for our week here, but spent some time on st.john first. We took a taxi from the airport to redhook and then to Bluebeards after our trip from st.john. Both times the taxi drivers charged MORE for what we were quoted!.We heard others say the same thing.

Room Tip: all rooms are ocean front. we were in room 216.

“Private beach, nice and quiet for St. Thomas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

We went to this resort to enjoy quiet time in the caribean and boy did it deliver. Accomodations are just o.k. but the beach is great, you don't have to fight for a beach chair, and the views are fantastic.

This resort is definitely remote and you really need a car. There is no restaurant on site although the bar and the bartender were great. The drawback is that after spending time on the beach you either have to cook for yourself from food that was purchased at the very expensive grocery stores in St. Thomas or you have to leave to go to a restaurant.

Room Tip: We stayed in a "studio plus". These rooms are on the top floor and provide fantastic view...

“Nice private beach, average accomodations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

My husband and I used some timeshare points to spend 3 nights here in early February. During our stay we spoke to several couples who make this their go-to destination every year. But we couldn't understand why. Although the property features a lovely private beach, nice pool and swim-up bar, the units are merely average.

Supposedly newly remodeled, the bathroom in our unit looked like it had been handled by an amateur plumber. There was orange caulk/sealant haphazardly spread/smeared all around the base of the toilet. And the toilet did not work well. We asked the front desk to have maintenance take a look at it, but they obviously did not during our stay.

Upon arrival, I noticed the room was not clean. I grabbed the broom and promptly swept up about a 1/2 cup of dust/sand/debris in the kitchen & bath alone.

We regret our decision not to rent a car. A car is a must at this location! Occasionally a cab is onsite, but more often than not, you will be waiting up to 45 minutes for one to arrive.

What once must have been a restaurant/bar/nightclub is now a neglected/condemned eyesore in the middle of the resort. But, even with it's problems, the resort still has appeal for those wanting a true getaway from the hustle and bustle. This a quiet resort, with decent furnishings, a nice pool and beautiful private beach.

“BOB best of the best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2013

The Ritz it's not, but it is home for me and my family for a month a year. The people in the Islands are the best. When we needed anything all we ever do is ask and you have it. One must always remember you are on island that does not produce a thing, not even booze, with one exception they produce love and lots of it, and they show it by the minute. A paradise in my eyes and I live in a home in Florida and my pool at home gets cold, down to a very low 82..If you are looking for the Ritz go to the Ritz, please I am tired of hearing people complain about nothing.

Room Tip: Just ask! and if available you will get what you ask!!!!
