Traveling to VI for the first time on a limited budget with The Guy. We chose this hotel for the price, not bad reputation, and the good reviews on Trip Advisor. Booked directly through BW with the AAA discount.
I found the room to be pretty good. Not four star mind you, but adequate. There is a mini fridge, but no microwave. Flat screen TV, but few channels. The A/C is great, but loud. The sheets were clean and the bed was large, but the mattress was concave and the pillows a little too soft. The floors are tile - which given the amount of sand that tracks in, is a good idea. Maid service will make the bed, sweep up the floor, and replace towels, soap, etc., but they never cleaned the dead mosquitos off the mirror.
You are located right on the beach so pounding surf is your constant companion. The views are to DIE for and the beach isn't bad. Beach towels are available at the front desk. The airport noise can be a bit jarring during the day, but it drops off at night and ends completely at 11pm. I found the hotel staff VERY helpful and friendly. There was one not-so-great person who was about on par with every other front desk worker I've ever met. She stood out because she wasn't as above average. The hotel boutique is run by a professional diver type , but opens late and closes early.
There is little background noise in the room, so things tend to echo a bit too much. The rooms are all non-smoking, but that does not apply to porches, the bar, or the beach. We did have maintenance issues - which were handeled promptly. Though it took two complaints to fix the porch door (repeated complaints are very bad in their book). Our issues with the safe required being there with the engineer for liability reasons. The internet was down for most of our stay, but was eventually fixed. Since I didn't choose the hotel for connectivity - this wasn't an issue.
The staff tends not to tell you the amenities available, so be sure to read through the hotel binder when you check in. You will have mosquitos. This is a fact of life on the island. Take your OFF! and spray around thresholds and in the closet. Keep the drapes pulled after dusk and limit the number of lights you leave on at night. The hotel is located near the airport - but away from most tourist destinations and eateries. Cabs and open-air busses are easily gotten, and there is plenty of rental car parking. Plan meals in advance, or eat at the hotel (dinner starts at 6 and is wall to wall pasta. I have wheat issues and never ate there).
Also, Very Important, do NOT stay at this hotel on a Friday night. The Hotel Next Door has Karaoke on the beach from 7-11 every Friday with the mic amps turned all the way up. The sound carries up and down the beach, drowing out everything including the surf. I coudn't think for all noise and ended up crying hysterically rather than enjoying my last night in paradise. I told BW Management about it, but there is little they can do and the Hotel Next Door is unlikely to change.
