“Umm...Maybe Sleep At the Airport”

Best Western Carib Beach

Feb 4, 2008

We spent 6 days on St. John and had to leave our villa one day before we left the islands so we decided to stay on St. Thomas for our last night. There were 6 of us in 3 rooms. The rooms were not ready at check in time and we had to wait. We were told we could leave our luggage in the luggage room while we shopped in town. The luggage room was literally a storage closet with old furniture and no lock so anyone could go in or out. When we could check in, we had reserved the "cottage" units-suites with king size beds on/near the beach and pool. We got 2 rooms with double beds that were so small that you couldn't walk between the furniture. The suitcases didn't even fit in the closet, so we had to put them in front of the bathroom door and climb over them to get in the bathroom. The third room had a king size bed and some walking room, but wasn't much better overall. We were not in the cottages but in the main building. To get to the rooms, we had to carry all of our luggage up the flights of stairs as there was no elevator. When we got there, the rooms were dirty and you had to flip a switch on the wall to turn on the electricity to the room. The first room had a cockroach the size of my fist and the safe wouldn't work because it had "low batteries". Our friends called the front and were told there were no extra batteries and they'd write about the cockroach in "the book." The second room had no flushing toilet and they were told it would also go in "the book" and someone would look at it in several hours or the next day. The third room had a broken safe and a clock that flashed 12:00 no matter what you did to try to set it. You guessed it, both requests went "in the book." Our room also had shampoo and lotion bottles that were 2/3 empty when we got there and 3 towels. All the other rooms had 4 towels so we asked for another since there are no pool towels. We were told we'd be charged for our 4th towel. Then we asked for a cab to be called to go to dinner and were told that they couldn't get cabs to come there. The woman at the front desk told us that if we did somehow get a cab we should not pay more than $4/person because that was supposed to be the regulated rate. Since we couldn't get a cab, the woman at the front desk had her friend drive us in her personal Explorer filled with her personal stuff. The friend charged us $6/person and even though he promised to come get us after the meal, he went home early and we were on our own. The room next to ours was "under construction" and had a shower curtain instead of a sliding glass door. The balconies were not private and anyone could walk into any balcony or see into any room, even on the second floor. The next morning we went to Fajitas for breakfast, but after 30 minutes, we hadn't even been asked if we wished to order drinks (3 other tables were full in the restaurant) and no one even bothered to say they'd ever be with us, so we left without eating. Then we went to the pool where tiles are missing/broken. As others have said, the "beach" isn't really a beach and both the pool and the beach are across the parking lot from the actual hotel. Finally, it was time to check out and go to the airport. Since there was no cab service, we had to walk. The walk was short, but we had to walk down the flight of stairs in the hotel with our luggage and then down another flight at the airport. It was strange to walk ourselves to the airport but at least we got there...not sure the Carib Beach would have ever gotten us there! Then, once we got to the airport, I realized I forgot my prescription sunglasses in the hotel. It was time to go, so I called them the next day and was told that it was their policy that they don't ship anything, so I'd have to come get them if I wanted them back! Sure, I'll just swing over from Minnesota on my way home from work! They were $300 sunglasses since they were prescription! I wish we had gone home a day early rather than spent a day at the Carib Beach. Let's just say it wasn't one more day in paradise!

Best Western Carib Beach

We actually made our reservation for the sister property Best Western Emerald Beach Resort but they couldn't/wouldn't honor our reservation so they stuck us at the Carib Beach Resort. Folks don't be mislead by the term Beach in the BW Carib BEACH Resort title the "Beach" they are referring to is artificial and the water entrance is all rocks. The beautiful beach can be seen across the bay that you have to take a shuttle to. Not very convienant. Plus, they tried to charge us the same rate for the lessor Carib hotel room as the nice hotel you can see across the bay. so unless you like the being able to walk to the airport (3 minute stroll) away I strongly suggest you find a room elsewhere. This was supposed to be the last night of our honeymoon and it was greatly diminshed because of our stay there. 2 Thumbs Down. oh and to top is all off they charged us a daily rate for the safe in the room, that didn't even work!

As the website says, this place has all the amenities for a perfect visit. Unfortunately, none of them work or are managed effectively.
Our group had 9 rooms and we experienced problems in ALL of them: no wireless ("the computer guy is off island and will return in 4 days"); no computer in the lobby (the monitor was not working, and was not replaced); no electricity in two of the rooms (this was finally fixed, after MUCH persistence); the battery on the free shuttle went bad on Saturday, and it was not fixed until Tuesday afternoon; a faulty smoke detector (that chirped throughout the night) was reported on Sunday and, again, after MUCH persistence, fixed on Thursday; the phone in one of the rooms did not work; many of the room key cards did not work and had to be replaced or re-charged every other day.
The front desk staff, of course, has to bear the wrath of customers for this mismanagement. Whenever I would go to the desk to "complain," I would feel badly for them because there would always be 3 or 4 other customers with other complaints! It is no wonder that some of them have decided to simply hand the customer a card and say, "call the manager."
The ONE bright spot in all of this is the Fajita's restaurant and staff. The food is great and the staff is very friendly and accomodating.
