My wife and I visited the Ritz Carlton St. Thomas last year on our honeymoon and we plan to visit again this coming August. The hotel itself and the hotel grounds are immaculate. The landscaping is beautiful and the hotel facilities are top notch. The beach, like most other hotel beaches on St. Thomas, is relatively small. The rooms are typical Ritz guest rooms. They are adequately sized and ornately furnished. We had the pleasure of staying in one of the large oceanfront suites, which was fabulous.
The greatest benefit of staying at any Ritz Carlton is the hotel's attention to service. On our visit, everyone seemed like they were waiting around to do something for us. The hotel had champagne and flower petals in our room on arrival and gave us a limited edition print of the hotel upon checkout to commemorate our visit. We probably recieved more perks than normal because we had our wedding at the Ritz Carlton in DC and often stay at Ritz Carltons on business.
My only complaint was the price of food. It was essentially in line with every other Ritz I have visited, but it adds up to a very large sum over a one week stay. You can expect to pay roughly $25 per person for eggs and bacon. A plate of nachos at the pool were $15. There are several dining options in the nearby harbour town of Red Hook, but by the time you add on the price of the taxi it's the same price to eat at the hotel. However, I did raid a local market to get sodas, snacks, etc.
Overall, this is a wonderful resort in an idyllic setting. Like any Carribean resort, your experience will vary greatly depending on the time of year you visit. If you visit from late November to the end of April, expect a packed house at the resort. The town of Charlotte Amalie will also be filled with cruise ships dumping off thousands of people a day. In the summer, the crowds thin, the prices drop, and cruise ships normally come to port only two days out of the week. The trade off is that you run into the risk of hurricanes starting in late July. I personally enjoy visiting in the summer.
