Eight family members staying at the Marriott, including my wife and I, decided to celebrate 2 birthdays and an engagement by dining at Havana Blue. Suffice it to say we don't have pleasant memories of our evening here.
Immediately, dinner did not start out well. For drinks, I ordered a local beer. Our young, inexperienced waiter served it lukewarm, without a glass. Now, this restaurant is not exactly a dive bar or a casual dining restaurant. One would think that they would know enough to serve a bottled beer cold, with a glass. When I pointed out the problems to the waiter, he seemed annoyed, and he brought me a glass, but no replacement cold beer.
It went downhill from there. Two family members are allergic to wheat and asked our waiter which menu items were gluten-free. He said he'd have to check with the chef. He came back and said the filet mignon dish was free of any wheat products. Both ordered the filet, but when it came out, it was covered with fried, battered onions. When the wheat contamination was pointed out to the waiter, he said he could "scrape the onions off the steak," as if that would solve the problem. Clearly no training was provided to this hapless waiter, who had no idea how serious some food requirements truly are.
I ordered the coconut shrimp. On the menu, it sounded delicious, but when it came out, it was covered with chili powder and was dry and unappetizing. I got 5 overcooked medium size shrimp, and some sauteed greens, in a very bland presentation, for something like $38.
One older family member enjoyed most of her meal, but when the staff member came out to remove the dish, the bus person said "I'll take that from you, unless you want to lick the plate." Everyone in our party was appalled at this comment, and her husband told the bus person her comment was highly insulting. The bus person left, but then came back and apologized repeatedly, stating she was just a poor "country girl fresh off the turnip truck" (her words) who didn't mean any harm, while referring to the family member she'd insulted as "sweet muffin." Later she brought our family member a bouquet of colorful leaves picked from ....who knows. They were presented in a plastic cup.
The dinner bill was over $500, with relatively little alcohol. Fortunately we received some vouchers from the Marriott resort that reduced the bill significantly. However, the restaurant added in a gratuity of 20%, due to the size of our party. Our servers had not earned nor demonstrated the skills to receive that amount.
I've read some of the other reviews here, and they seem to fall into 2 categories: loved it, or hated it. I'd say we fall into the latter category. This restaurant is very overrated and needs to work on training, menu flexibility and attention to simple details.
