First off, I live on St. Croix and have been going to Eat at Cane Bay for many years since it opened. As a disclaimer, this is a small island and I know the owner, but I'm writing this review of my own accord.
Many years ago, before I had 2 little children I loved the place. Amazingly, I am still able to enjoy it with 2 little guys in tow (a 2 and 4 year old). It is very rare to find a place with such amazing food and an atmosphere that caters to a couple in their late 20's as well as a couple with 2 little children in their early thirties with equal appeal.
The core menu consists of fantastic build your own salads and burgers. On the salads, for $14 you get to choose a protein, 7 "toppings", your greens, and a fantastic dressing. They are a meal in themselves and really a great value on St. Croix. The burgers are also "Build your own" and you can choose the meat (Chicken or Beef), toppings etc. that are varied and even include Foie Grois. Also on the core menu are great sandwiches all priced reasonably.
If that isn't good enough the real treats are the food shots and specials. Because ingredients vary so much in St. Croix these are drawn up on a giant chalkboard each day from what is fresh. The food shots are amazing, bite size servings of gourmet "entree" like food for an appetizer. Every night there are 3 different food shots and they are really affordable ($2-$4 each with a discount if you buy 4 of a given kind). Last night the food shots featured smoked duck, tuna tar tar and steak with shrimp. All 3 were really top notch quality, for around $10 you can try a bite of 3 gourmet entrees which is unbeatable. The specials also vary, if they have fresh tuna I highly recommend it as the tuna around St. Croix is fantastic and has a really amazing texture and flavor that you have to try if you are lucky enough to be down here.
The service is great, it's such a fun atmosphere and the establishment, while the simple deck bar layout has an amazing view of the Caribbean sea and mountains at Ham's Bluff. Katherine is always fantastic to her guests and I am always in awe of what that small kitchen can turn out, both in quality and in speed (note that St. Croix service times will never match that of the stateside chain restaurants so patience is always advised). The bar always makes fun and unique drinks as well.
If you are on St. Croix I'd highly recommend a meal at Eat, if you are staying at Carambola or the North Shore this is a must have dinner! Get off the resort and enjoy!
