Singh's is a must visit in St Croix. It is a truly local place run by truly kind people. The food is varied and incredible; the only place I have found offering similar quality and price over such a wide variety of dishes is Monell's in Nashville. At Singh's, you can get a plate, which consists of many pounds of rice (fried, white or seasoned with red beans), a main course (I did not try the meats but the curry tofu was delicious, the veggie lasagna was the best I've ever had and the fish stew and curried shrimp and conch were quite tasty as well), and a side (plantains, boiled yuca/yams/bananas with peppers and onions, baked macaroni and cheese that even the most finicky kids enjoyed multiple times, curried eggplant, sauteed spinach, etc. The kids as well as the adults also loved the jonny cakes.
As if that was not enough, Singh's also has roti, which in keeping with West Indian style is really more like a roti "wrap" or burrito versus just a plain traditional Indian roti with filling on the side. They put some seasoned potatoes on the roti in place of rice and then add your choice of tofu, fish, meat, or chicken. A friend and I (both hearty eaters) split a tofu roti for lunch because it was so big and we still were too stuffed to eat dinner later that day. The roti especially holds up very well for travel; I went back right before heading to the airport to grab a roti for the plane and everyone seating around me was quite jealous when I pulled it out!
The prices are unbelievable -- the plates feed 2 to 3 people and seem to range from $10 to $15and the the roti I had that filled two adults was either $7 or $8.
The food is already prepared so there is little to no wait, which is another bonus when traveling with children. There are a few seats but it is primarily a take out place; best bet is to walk a few blocks down to the Fort and have a picnic at one of the tables there (that assumes you can resist the wonderful smells coming out of your carryout bag of food to make it to the Fort without stopping on the sidewalk to eat!).
Considering the variety, quantity and quality of the food as well as the incredibly cheap prices, I think Singh's is one of the best restaurants at which I have ever eaten. Don't get stuck in St Croix eating burgers and fries as that is available back home; instead taste some local food that will make you want to book a return flight as soon as possible when you get back home and make you wonder why your town has nothing at all like Singh's.
