“Awesome relaxing time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2010

We stayed at the Palms from Nov 8 - 12 and what a great relaxing time it was. We arrived in the eve and it was dark but that didn't take away the sound of the waves crashing on the sand right outside our sliding glass door. We were upgraded when we got there to a beachfront room. It was so awesome to have our own chairs and patio to sit on with the sand right beneath our feet. The only part about the trip that wasn't so great was that it rained 2 whole days we were there. As my husband kept reminding me, we are not at work and he was right! We still sat out on the back patio even in the rain since it was covered. We read books and took advantage of the sun every minute we could. We woke every morning and got our sun right there on the patio. I loved it, nothing like laying out at 8am. We took long walks on the beach and visited a few of the surrounding hotels too. The bar and restaurant area at the Palms was great too. Every morning we ate at the restaurant with the beach just steps away. Ambiance was very romantic as well. We made use of the bar every night we were there and fell in love with the backwards chicken wings and their pizza. The bar was a very comfortable atmosphere and very inexpensive as well. One night we sat there for hours from like 4pm-9pm or so and our bar bill with pizza and wings, and many rum and cokes was only around $40. We were shocked. Why go to those fancy dinners and pay that on just one entree when you are so much more relaxed with the waves crashing and great music playing in the background. The bartender Joe Van was the best. We loved talking to him and getting info on the island and locals from him. The housekeepers were so friendly and would get you anything you wanted extra towels, shampoo, whatever! I highly recommend the palms to anyone on a budget that doesn't care about how many stars a place has or what the reviews say about them. The friendly staff is what make that place a success. I will also say that the accomodations were wonderful. Modern, clean, and spacious. May I suggest that on your way from the airport, you tip the taxi driver a little extra and stop at the grocery store on the way and get yourself some drinks (liquor), snacks, and bottled water. The liquor is so cheap and sold in the grocery store there. My husband bought a bottle of vodka for $2.49 and drank on it all week. They also provide you with a great bottle of cruzan rum in your room when you arrive. All you need to get is the mixers. There is a frig right in the room and ice right outside the door. The best thing about the Palms is that we didn't feel the need to dress up everytime we left the room or went to eat. It was nice to have such a comfortable envrionment. Thank you to all the staff for making our stay awesome!!!Hope you have a great time when you decide to go.

The Palms is situated on a beautiful, quiet, palm tree-lined beach about 15 minutes drive from downtown Christiansted. Our room was in a building a short walk from the service complex, containing the reception area, terrace restaurant, bar and pool. The room was clean and spacious and had a large balcony overlooking the beach and sea.

The current owners, Chuck and Joyce, went way beyond the usual to make us feel welcome and enjoy our stay. Chuck spent an hour with us going over a map of the island and suggesting some driving routes and things to see, some of which we would not have found on our own and were glad we did. He also took us snorkeling in the cove at the resort (they provide equipment), pointed out various sea creatures and took our pictures with an underwater camera. This is a complimentary service he provides to guests, and well worth doing. Before we left he gave us a CD containing the pictures he took as well as others of sea life in the cove. I should mention that he travels occasionally and so is not always there.

The resort bar and restaurant are open-air, casual spots with views of the beach and pool and reasonable prices. They attracted locals as well as resort guests. There was live entertainment most of the nights we were there. This was a great place for a romantic getaway, and the beach and pool would appeal to children as well. There were some families there during our stay. We were very pleased with the Palms and will stay there again on our next visit.

This was our first vacation to the Islands so I relied on Trip Advisor in making my decision on where to stay. I have to say I was not dissapointed. Upon arriving at the Palm's two things immediatly stood out. One was the friendliness of the staff. After spending 3 nights on St. Thomas it was like night and day. The other was how clean the entire grounds were. We dis experience a couple of issues with the rooms, but each was handled about as well as could be expected. One was a air conditioner that wasn't working. We were quickly moved to another room. The other issue was a leaky water which was also handled promptly. They are in the midst of major renovations on all the rooms so I would expect the next time we go evrything will be evan better. The Palm's is located very close to grocery stores and is also a short ride to downtown Christiansted. As far as the restaraunt it offers all the basics that you would expect. A full breakfast menu, lunch from the bar or restaurant, and a full dinner menu. We did not have any problems at all with the food or service. Snorkeling with Chuck the owner was the highlight. This was not just a throw on the mask, fins, and snorkel and go jump in the water. Chuck told us what we might see, gave complete instruction on where we would be going and also towed my wife on a life bouy just because she was somewhat apprehensive about the whole thing. She had never snorkeled before. he then gives you a cd with pics from your snorkel trip plus other pics of the reef. If you're looking for a wild bar scene you probably will be dissapointed. It did pick up in the evening however. I myself prefer having a drink drink without having listen to someone who's had too much to drink throwing f bombs around. All said if you want a relaxing, peaceful vacation I don't think you could do better. We're looking forward to returning and with all the renovations it can only be better.

We travel to lots of resorts and Chuck was the most accommodating owner we have ever encountered. His free snorkeling tour of the reef was great, as was a night snorkel he also took my wife and I on. Chuck gave us a CD with pictures from our swims plus some other choice fish shots. The reef is just off shore, with several tiers of ledges in especially shallow water, often less than one foot deep. The ledge’s nooks and crannies were teeming with lobsters, eels and octopi. Beyond the ledges, but still close to shore, was some deeper water, with Elkhorn Coral and lots of fish. The coral didn’t look too healthy, Chuck said a heat wave damaged them a few years back. Anyway, the fish were plentiful out there.
Nice beach too, long and quiet. Didn’t have many beach chairs out, due to rules regarding turtle nesting on the beach, but I think it would have been nice to have a few more on the sand, even if they have to be set back from the water. You could walk west on the beach in front of a similar sized hotel and you could walk for quite a way (miles?) going east, at least if you don’t mind the wide variability in the beach front property (upscale condos to shacks) and if you wear shoes for walking over the rocks and shells.
The rooms were very comfortable. We had a third floor ocean front suite, with a nice private patio overlooking the ocean. We would have slept with the windows open, but there were no screens, and mosquitoes love me, so we made do with air conditioning.
Food was fine, ate there daily for breakfast, and almost every night for dinner.
We also played golf everyday, six times at Carambola (amazing course in the mountains) and once at the Buccaneer, worth going to once for some magnificent ocean views, but not in the same league as Carambola. Chuck arranged for all our tee times and some discounts from the steep green fees.
Staff was very friendly and cooperative and prices for the rooms and food were very reasonable.
Downsides were some errors in our bill that they were painlessly straightened out, the tennis courts needed resurfacing, and the couple we were travelling with had maintenance issues in their unit, the bedroom air conditioner did not work. Fortunately, the living room air conditioner was powerful enough to cool the bedroom as well. The A/C was repaired during the stay. They also had limited hot water that, once the water heater was replaced, still wasn’t much better. Hopefully, some simple adjustment will fix that for the next guests in that room.

Amazing hotel! I've been to Domincan Republic, Bahamas, Colombia, and Acapulco, and I've never seen the hybrid experience of having a private tranquil serene paradise around you with the same services you would get at any gargantuan casino hotel. One thing is to experience the great outdoors in its natural splendor, it's another to be subjected to the discomforts that come with raw nature and the bad services in some of these small hotels in the Caribbean. And having sufficient service in a big hotel is great but do you really go to the caribeean to be in a big building or sit at a craps table? I don't! I want a clean room, good food, hospitality, and greenish blue water at a beautiful beach right outside my room surrounded by palm trees. I wanrt to wake up and look through large sliding door window and hear and see the blue waves..Is that too much to ask? Not when the Palms Pelican Cove in St. Croix exists! It's the only quaint hotel I've ever been to that has these qualities. The owner Chuck offers complimentary snorkle dives for his guests and is a very friendly and approachable host.. The island attitude is usually slower than our own antsy attitude in NY but at the Palms they keep in mind us finicky "must have now" north easterners with prompt curteous service. WIll definitely go back next year. My wife and will treasure the experience.
