“3 Star Hotel in a 5 Star Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2014

The hotel is located on an island that is a 4 minute boat ride from the town of Christiansted. Free for hotel guests. The ferry runs on demand and they go back and forth 100s of times a day. Never had to wait. The beach was great. We bought beer in Gallows Bay and took it with us to the beach everyday in a plastic bag filled with ice from the machines at the hotel. Umbrellas are $10 so get to the beach early to snag up one of the four free ones that are permanently anchored. There is a food truck everyday at 7:30pm that is right where you catch the ferry boat to the island. That is your best bet for food. The brew pub was closed when we were there - they lost their brewmaster :-( don't know if it will open again :-( St. Croix seems to be depressed with many places boarded up or closed. Great snorkeling right off the beach - I even saw a few turtles.

Room Tip: Request a harbor view room to catch the ocean breeze.

My fiance and I visited Hotel on the Cay recently. Our stay here 5/17-5/24 was very relaxing and peaceful. The hotel is on such a cool little island with a nice beach. Staff work hard on the landscaping, rooms have comfy beds and some basic necessities which allow you to eat meals in your room if you have some staples. Our room had a good view of the harbor and beach. Rooms were a bit outdated but we knew from reading previous reviews that we weren't staying at the Ritz. Mary at the dock store on the Cay is a good person to make friends with during your trip - she'll give you good tips of where to go if you're debating. The hotel shuttle across the harbor is super quick and there is never a wait. Def try: The Tavern, You are Here for their pizza, Paradise Cafe and Kim's Restaurant. We weren't impressed with the Tues night entertainment on the beach but were told by many that it was "the place to go". Two of the events that we went to that we enjoyed were: a tour at Cruzan Rum Distillery and the Buck Island Snorkeling Tour. Would we go back again? Yes, next time I'd like to visit when it's not "off season" for a little more excitement but this was a vacation that made us get some Rest and Relaxation :)

We rented a villa for a week but decided to add an extra day to our trip and stay here. I wish we could've stayed longer! I can't believe how affordable it is. Cheaper than some run down motel off some interstate but in the middle of paradise. Everyone in our group was pretty impressed. We got a friendly greeting and check in was easy. I had a package of sunblock and bug repellant made by a couple on St John arranged and waiting for me. Our room was on the top floor and very nice and clean with an excellent view. Every person we encountered, staff and guest, was friendly and helpful.
It's very convenient to take the ferry over for dinner on the boardwalk. We got caught in a brief rain on our way back and our boat was waiting for us. What a blast running through the rain on a warm evening to catch a small ferry to a little island.
Wifi worked in different spots, at different times. My 16 year old was pretty happy about that. The a/c worked almost too well, opening up the balcony doors and feeling the breeze was heavenly. I sat on the balcony long after everyone else and just enjoyed the waves lapping below.....great start to my vacation. The grounds were beautiful and you could tell a lot of care had gone into it.
We checked out at 11 and enjoyed the fabulous beach for a few hours. I found Nemo while snorkeling. We caught the ferry back over to the boardwalk, said our goodbyes and had lunch in town. Heading back afterwards to the parking lot near the dock, we see the ferry captain waving us over. We had forgotten our half case of beer which also had sandals and sunblock in the box. He had kept it on the boat and watched for us for a few hours so he could return everything! We really appreciated that and it says a lot about the staff at Hotel on the Cay.
Everyone really went out of their way for us here and we really enjoyed this place. We are already planning our second trip to St Croix for next year. This is where we'll be staying. Thank you for a great stay!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a week and really enjoyed our time here. The room had a little balcony with an ocean view, a nice bathroom, and a small kitchenette with a microwave, toaster oven, and a small fridge with plenty of dishes. The private beach is nice and the hotel is well maintained. We really liked that the hotel is on its own island, we never had to wait too long for the ferry to take us back or forth. The chairs and umbrellas for the beach and the ferry are free for hotel guests. The hotel staff is very friendly, we arrived before check-in and they held our bags so we could go out and look around. We would certainly stay here again.

John, the general manager of the hotel was friendly, personable, and very welcoming. Interesting man, working on his PhD in his spare time and also maintaining an interest in his guests. Always professional, helpful and kind while looking after the best interest of his guests.

While the inner courtyard could use some maintenance and upkeep, the rooms were clean, well maintained and organized. The views from the rooms were across the water towards Gallows Bay or toward Christiansted Harbor.
The hotel was run very efficiently.

I found my stay at "Hotel on the Cay" to be extremely enjoyable. The staff Ana, Sarah, and Memsa went out of their way to ensure my visit was pleasurable. Their customer service was surprisingly pleasant (due to the continuous inadequate service that is usually received here on-island in STX compared to STT, which is unfortunate.) The rooms and hotel itself could use some contemporary updates, however the less modern feel was acceptable. Our 3rd floor room had an amazing ocean view with a cool breeze coming from the balcony, and the ferry offers convenient hours in order to travel back and forth into town. The beach was an extra added bonus; nice and relaxing with a bar and grill that offered an appetizing menu. Overall, I had a wonderful time and will definitely recommend staying at Hotel on the Cay again.

This was just a long weekend, wedding anniversary trip. In its time this was probably a gorgeous hotel. It's still a wonderful location and concept but in bad need of investors to renovate. This could easily be 5 star with money & renovation. Service was very slow but friendly. They only serve breakfast & lunch. The "restaurant" is not associated with the hotel. Go to breakfast or lunch well before you're hungry. Tiny "store" by the ferry. Ferry ride available whenever you need it and ride is a 2 minute ride. Beware no elevator if you cannot climb stairs. Negatives aside, we'd still go back.
