We just arrived back home from The Buccaneer in St. Croix where we truly had a wedding in paradise. First the worst part of The Buccaneer is their website....because their site does them NO justice. We had a group of 22 people including 2 children and 1 teenager, and all of them continued to comment how wonderful the resort was. Majority of the group had traveled to other islands and tropical areas including myself (i.e. Bermuda, Hawaii, Bahamas, ect..) and none of them could beat the views, service, and activities of The Buc. We arrived and were taken back at the unbelievable views that words would simply understate. The front desk staff was very polite the whole week, which they will call you by name with a smile any time of day or night. Everyone makes you feel at home. Our suite was in the Luxury Ocean Front which was out of this world, spacious, and very tropical....which was cleaned everyday and every night our bed was turned down. Many of our guests stayed in the great house with ocean front views and I couldn't find one bad view. There were a few of our family members who stayed in the Doubloons which were gorgeous, however you are separated from the rest of the resort, and would want to shuttle back and forth if you're dressed for dinning in the terrace, due to the larges hills. Speaking quickly on the dinning, every morning we had a complementary breakfast which was not your usual free breakfast.......you name it, and they had it, if they didn't have it out buffet style, they were willing to make it. We would eat a full breakfast, and not be hungry till dinner. We ate dinner at the terrace 4 out of 6 nights and every meal was spectacular. The service was good, incredibly friendly. We also closed the bar at the terrace every night which is excellent overlooking the lights of Christiansted and live music every night. We had our rehearsal dinner at Tutto Bene and had a blast, and our reception was at the Brass Parrot on the resort which Dennis does a fantastic job on not only the food but being sure every "want and needs" are attended to. If you are getting married Carolyn does not miss a step, it was very daunting planning a wedding, never stepping foot on the location; however, Carolyn is a superhero in being sure everything is taking care of, and making sure you relax and enjoy your stay. I'm a very hands on type of person, but between the trio of Carolyn, Dennis and your choice of officiate it was honestly worry-free. Our choice for the officiate was Louise, who may be the only person to gather more praise then the resort itself. If you want to make your wedding memorable, DEMAND Louise. Her approach is heart felt and unrushed. She is sure that you take in the surroundings, and the "moments".
We read some of the 27 out of 150 or so bad reviews prior to booking, and after experiencing it for ourselves, these folks I believe simply had a string of bad luck situations or just can not be pleased. The resort has two pools, both of which are nothing to necessarily "write home about", however I don't know why you'd want to hang out at a pool when you have the Caribbean at your back door which was about 82 degrees. You are welcome to any of the snorkel supplies, rafts, or if you have children many of the beach toys that are all free with your stay. Other activities on the island were easily booked through the concierge service when we arrived. We spent approximately 10-15 minutes and we had a weeks worth of activities in place with the help of Emmy at the desk, who made all the calls and arranged taxi service when needed. My wife had a relaxing day at the spa, along with hair and makeup on our wedding day, and she had nothing but good things to say about the staff and services. I played golf at the resort and the conditions were not too good, but it was the offseason and the views from the course will outway any patchy conditions you come across.
The island of St. Croix itself is still devastated from hurricanes of the past (Hugo being the worst). Many of the locals live in poverty, and many of the buildings have never been repaired in and around Christiansted. While off the resort we were smart traveled like we were in any other big city.....traveled in groups, our group shopped during the day, didn't carry a lot of cash at one time, all of the things you've been told over and over any other time....and we never had an issue.
It was a vacation/wedding of a lifetime. Our stay at The Buccaneer resort was incredible, and we already look forward to returning.
