The Bio Bay tour with Virgin Kayak tours was the highlight of our family's trip and we did almost everything we could think of (horses, drinking pigs, Buck Island, golfing). There is not another experience like it and it was amazing for all of us (ages 5 to 40!). Bryan and Jill take exceptional care of you and their knowledge of and dedication to the island and its environmental and historical health is truly to be admired. The paddle kayaks are the way to go. It makes it so kids can participate (or not) much more easily. I will share that we were initially considering the clear bottom canoe tours. First, DO NOT do that tour. Second, it was a complete blessing that they didn't accept little kids (my 5 year old). We went out with Bryan and could hear and see that other tour provider on the water. He was shouting at his customers and he was loud and pushy. Bryan is the antithesis, he's calm and funny and all about giving you an amazing bay experience. I won't give away the details of the actual bioluminescence, you really need to experience it for yourself. Be sure to bring cash to pay for your trip - there isn't a cash machine close (much to my embarrassment!). Also, you can take pictures but your camera will not capture the little bios. We're going back and, while our travel dates won't work for the bio tour, we're going to visit Bryan and Jill for another tour experience. You NEED to take this tour.
