“Nightmare at Cane Bay Reef Club...a Foul Disgusting Dump with Deceitful Owner”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2011

Please take heed of what I’m reporting here. Before our trip, I read bad reviews about Cane Bay Reef Club but thought that people were exaggerating. We found out the hard way that this place and its owner, Sita, are worse than anyone described. Even locals say they can’t believe the place is not yet shut down, condemned, and the owner locked up. They refer to it as the Cane Bay “Grief” Club. We go to St. Croix yearly and waited too long to book so the place we like to use was full. Cane Bay Reef Club was inexpensive and beachfront. According to their website, it was exactly what we were looking for. When we arrived we were horrified. This place is foul...a disgusting dump. Their website is a farce...everything they claim they have, they don’t or it is broken. It’s a despicable lie. We are divers and only want basic comforts but you don’t even get that here. It’s the worse place we’ve ever stayed in 30 years of diving. We asked Sita for a refund to go someplace else but were told no. She did promise a credit of one day because we chose to leave early but she never did that. She is a despicable dishonest woman. Ceiling fans and overhead lights did not work. Windows had no glass or screens. I felt very unsafe. No hot water...daily you had to search for the handyman, Darryl, to light the hot water tank pilot light. Bathroom sink cabinet covered with heavy mold, smell, and leaking pipes. I complained about the conditions and was given a gallon of bleach and a scrubby. Couch had rips, stains and a foul odor. Refrigerator door handle was caked with large black greasy stains (years of built up sticky greasy hand prints). The A/C only worked as a fan...no cooling. Thank God they had a bedside lamp. Most appalling and gross was the pillows...stained beyond belief with bodily fluids, various colors, mold, shades of yellow, brown and black. Like someone pulled from a garbage dump and stuck a pillow case on it. Pool...what pool? What used to be a pool is just a nonfunctioning water hole. Wish I had more room to tell all but anyone is welcome to see our photos and youtube video of the place, or contact us.

I recently had a horrible expirience trying to stay at Cane Bay Reef Club. Now some of the more positive reviews cite that this is not a place for pretentious or demanding travelers, to which I agree. I would also like to add that this is not a place for sane travelers either. The ownership, aka Sita, is unhinged, greedy, and vengeful. The rooms are filthy and unsafe. And the normal residents are typically drug addicts. And there are frequent break-ins to the rooms and thefts of money and valuables. The worst part about all of this is that it is completely true and not inflamatory in the least!

4 days before our scheduled arrival they called to say they had made a mistake and our room rate was increasing 65%. When we tried to get back in touch "Sita" the person we had made reservation with was never available. Sent email and still no response. Tried to cancel reservation and finally got email from "Sita" saying we were beyond canc period and we would lose dep. Mgmt is not at all professional and actually seemed fraudulent.

The mathematics here are very simple...
The are more positive reviews out of all the reviews written, which means that so far Cane Bay Reef Resort, is in the lead.
How difficult was that to figure out?
So when planning your trip, you should go with the resort, that have passed the review test. That would be the smart thing to do... Again, congratulations to Cane Bay Reef Resort!
Keep up the good work!!

If you are a hiker, diver, backpacker type Traveler who likes to sit at the bar with locals, chat with the owners, and hear the waves crashing all night, you will love Cane Bay Reef Club. We don't mind a few bugs in the kitchen. When we're there, we feel like true Caribbean expats, and that's what matters to us. Know who you are before you travel. If you are a Tourist who enjoys cruises, shopping, and mainland-style cleanliness, you will be miserable here.

We just returned from STX and would like to warn anyone about the Cane Bay Reef Club. Do NOT stay there. We paid a deposit ($600.00) last year for the Penthouse room. This would be our third trip to STX (we had been staying in the Princess Area) and would go to the Cane Bay area several times during our previous stays so we decided to stay closer to that area this past trip. We knew we did not want to stay in any room other than the Presidential or Penthouse rooms (since they are in a building away from the restaurant and other rooms). We confirmed both with emails and even phone calls (3 of them) that we were booked in the Penthouse room. When we got there on April 21st, we were shown our room and it was NOT the Penthouse room. We told the manager that we booked the Penthouse room and she indicated that room was not available! We told her that we had written confirmation and that we had even talked to her and she still insisted that it was unavailable??!! Since we had no choice we stayed in the room we were given and it was awful. I killed 3 roaches that night as we were getting ready for bed. (We live in Florida so we are used to roaches but CLEAN places CONTROL them)

Nothing in the kitchen seemed to be clean and I would not even sit on the couch it was so dirty. The screen to the patio was all torn and not sure if it would keep anything out at all and the living room air conditioner was broke. Of course it got very noisy after the bar closed and the parking lot was right outside our bedroom.

We left the next day to find somewhere else to stay since we would be there for 9 more days and there was no way we would be able to spend another night in that room. We did find another place and returned to check out. We asked that we get our deposit money back and Sita (the manager) said the credit card machine was broken??!! We called a couple of times after that while we were still on the island and she always had an excuse on why she would not or could not return our deposit.

When we got home we called the credit card company (Visa) to dispute the deposit in hopes of getting the money back that way but it had passed the time limit for disputes to be filed. We then emailed Sita several times trying to appeal to their sense of decency and good business sense since we did not stay there nor did we even get the room that we had specifically requested. We have not heard back. Not even a "no" that they would consider it. We are now trying to find out if there is any agency (Consumer protection, Travel Bureau etc) in STX that might be able to persuade them to return the money to us.

So anyone considering staying at CANE BAY REEF CLUB......DON'T DO IT.
