“Quiet family hotel on an amazing white sand beach”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2011

Ocean West is a very quiet, relaxed family resort on a wonderful white sand beach that stretches for miles and miles. Club Med is right next door, so they obviously also think it a prime location too. Rooms were very airy and light, with quiet and unobtrusive housekeeping. Great restaurant beside the pool, and a locals favourite next door. Immaculate grounds, 2 swimming pools, tennis courts. Van service to the sister resort, which is across the street from the islands best supermarket, as well as a very nice shopping district. Very easy to arrange snorkel or scuba expeditions. We had a perfect Caribbean holiday.

We stayed for 4 nights. The place is great for retreats and quiet time to recharge!

The junior suite was spacious enough for us. Kitchen has all the utensils and appliances that we needed. There were lots of books everywhere, in the units and the lobby. That came handy one rainy day. The screened in veranda was good as well.

The shuttle driver offered to drop us off the local grocery and picked us up half an hour later. That was a big help since we also bought a whole case of bottled water.

We are currently staying here and have encountered a few problems during our stay thus far. When we arrived our room was not ready and we were told we would have to wait a couple of hours and we could go to the Seaside cafe on the grounds. They gave vouchers for 2 free coffees.

We quickly discovered walking around the resort that the resort was empty and there were a lot of rooms they could've checked us into however, we are on vacation ... No biggie!

We get into the room and the room is OK. Slightly dated and I would state it is not all that clean (I should mention I come from the building maintenance industry and therefore have a eye for what is clean and what is not). However it is not overly bad and we are on vacation ... No biggie!

Unfortunately the weather has not been all that great and we have had 4 days of pouring rain thus far and quickly found out of roof leaks! So we had pots, pans, and juice containers capturing the drips that were falling from the ceiling. Called the front desk to let them know and they already knew. hmmmm why did you out us in a leaky room then?!?! However we are on vacation ... No biggie!

It is now our 5th day here and we were out all day. Came back and the maid had not cleaned the room. Called the front desk and they called housekeeping who promptly called me back and stated the cleaning lady for this building has gone home for the day. Can we bring you some fresh towels and take out the garbage for today and then make sure it is fully cleaned tomorrow. Well we are still waiting for someone to show up with fresh towels and to take out the garbage. However we are on vacation .... No biggie!

In summation, this property is OK ... Not the best, not the worse. If you are going to stay here avoid coming in rainy season and if you do come in rainy season, avoid room 736 ... It leaks like crazy!

Hopefully our final days turn out a bit better than the first half of the week!

The room was a great size. The balcony was a nice touch too. The kitchen is a REAL fully stocked kitchen. The restaurant has decent food at a budget price. It's relatively close to all the big resorts. The beach is nice and clean.

There were a few complaints. The people at the front desk aren't really good with advice or setting things up for you. You really have to do everything yourself. The "dive shop" is weak. They don't have much snorkel gear or sizes. It was easier to just book snorkel trips through the companies themselves.

Overall, I think most people would be happy here given the quality of the resort for the price. However, there are better resorts out there.

I had a wonderful stay at this resort. I opted for an upgrade to have a 950 sq ft room as I was travelling with an 11 month old baby and wanted the extra space. It was the best decision as the room had everything we needed.

I can't rave enough about the beautiful beach. The staff were very friendly and genuine which can turn a good stay into a great one. There is a grocery store located nearby. We walked there on a nightly basis with the baby and felt safe.

My husband tried conch at the hotel for the first time in his life and thoroughly enjoyed it. My only complaint about this resort was that there were limited options for vegetarians. However, there are other restaurants within walking distance so it was not an issue. I would certainly return to this resort in the future.

Stayed for a week, had a studio room, very comfortable, washer/Dryer>wow who knew!... Room very comfortable, they thought of everything, staff very friendly and helpful. Grounds were very nicely maintained, Beach was nice 2, not crowded. Sea side grill on premises, food was good, and not tooo expensive, pretty reasonable. Close to shopping, over all very satisfied with my stay. They really did a good job of making they're guest feel @ home... So much so, I stayed an extra day... BTW got a peek @ a two bed room duplex room, OMG> Awesome!

Ocean Club West was a terrific place to stay. Grace Bay Beach is simply beautiful, and OCW has one of the widest stretches of beach. During our stay, we never had trouble finding chairs/umbrellas, and the resort offers free towel service by the pool/for the beach. The pool is a meandering oval, almost like a very lazy lazy river, and you can find random floats/rafts to use.

The rooms have everything you need: Full kitchen with dishes/pots and pans/small applicances, washer/dryer, screened-in balconies (most of the neighboring resorts do not have screened-in outdoor space), ceiling fans.

OCW is within walking distance to enough restaurants for a week's worth of dinners and then some. The Graceway Gourmet supermarket is a 10-minute walk and has a good selection, including wine/beer. The prices are higher than you'd find in the U.S., but still less than if you were to eat out. (Example: a box of cereal was about $7, a half gallon of milk was about $5.)

The staff at OCW is all very friendly, particulary Rochelle and Kharise at the front desk. (Vanessa is super friendly but doesn't seem to have a sense of urgency.)

Our first night, we were repeatedly awakened by a screaming baby in the next room. (I don't know if the poor boy's ears hadn't popped, or what, but it wasn't typical "my diaper is wet" crying.) The next morning, I went to the front desk and first asked when the baby room was checking out. Not till the same day as us, so I asked if we could be moved. At first I was told they didn't have a comparable room available for the duration of our stay, but then after management was consulted, it turned out they did (I guess whoever was supposed to get that room got an upgrade). Once we were moved it was much more peaceful.

OCW has a nice casual outdoor restaurant (just off the beach) on the premises, the Seaside Cafe. Try the grilled fish of the day -- yum! You can get a free shuttle to the sister Ocean Club east (about a 15-minute walk up the beach) and dine at the similar Cabana Bar on the beach or Opus restaurant (fancier and a very nice atmosphere), and can charge back to your room.

Other restaurants we tried and would recommend: Coyaba, Hemingway's.

We rented a car for one day from Grace Bay Car Rentals (within walking distance; for one day including tax/etc. it was about $63). We were able to drive around the entire island and see the sights in a day -- went to the Northernmost Resort (very isolated!), went to the south side -- Chalk Sound, Sapodilla Bay -- and went out to the east side where one can catch the ferry to Middle/North Caicos and drove around the Leeward neighborhood.

OCW also provides a few free bikes for use -- first come, first-served. Check the tires before riding off, we found a few with flats.

We went snorkeling with Caicos Adventures, which was a good 4-hour trip with a few stops (if you've never snorkeled before, tell them ahead of time, because the boat crew didn't give one tiny sentence of instruction before anchoring and telling everyone they could jump in). The boat made stops for conch diving (which the crew turned into conch salad when we stopped on Iguana Island for an hour), snorkeling along the reef, and for sand dollars.

All in all, OCW was just right. Not too crowded, not too desolate; in a perfect location. We would definitely go back.
