The best part about Parrot Cay is dreaming of getting there. Once we arrived we were met at the airport by a taxi (no resort representative) and dispatched to an awaiting 40 foot motor launch. The boat gets you there, but its very so so. You are greated at the boat dock and taken up the main lodge in a three row golf cart that makes you feel like you've just landed on fantasy island. At check-in we were greated by a nice enough woman who also poured us a welcome drink.
The room was nice with an ocean horizon view. Most are up on a hill, so you don't hear the ocean. They have gorgeous white ceiling to floor silk drapes, but that's about it. It's pretty much a barn like structure painted white. It's authentic minimalism...but a few comfortable seats or some slippers might be nice.
You will hear some buzzing at dusk as the resort brings out it's amphibous vehicle to spray for mosquitos. Folks, its not a minor problem, it's a huge problem...you cannot go out at night unless you are ready for some serious bug bite action.
The food was fine, but menu hardly changed. I was somewhat annoyed that we dined 3 times next to the hotel manager, who seemed to be more involved in entertaining himself than observing the slack service.
3-days in we were wishing we had gone to our favorite place Cap Juluca instead. To change it up, we went fishing. The resort owns a fleet of boats, we were sent out on a Boston Whaler, about 18 feet long. We got scared after the captain went out so far we could not see land. It got worse, he lost the anchor (forgot to tie it to the boat and threw it over)...and insisted he try and find it. Before we knew it, the captain had dived into the water after spotting it. He must have thought it was shallow, but we were in deep water, and he could barely swim. We rescued the captain and made it back...but the boat had no radio, no GPS, no map, no flare...and another tick of bad luck and we'd been lost at sea. After returning a request to see the general manger brought the assistant manager instead. While an apology was offered, it was sheepish and we we're billed for the outing.
On the flip side, we did see more than a few celebrities staying there which made for fun bragging rights back home (bruce willis, DKNY, streisand we're all there).
The small store in the main house has great merchandise. The SPA is absolutely fantastic, we rented the spa villa and enjoyed a couples message, bath and dinner. It's worth it.
On check-out, we were charged more per night than we were quoted and had choppy seas on the boat out. It took 30 minutes for them to tally up our tab. The SPA is probably one of the finest in the carribean, the accomidations are motel 6 with everything painted white, and the service is almost non-existant. If you are thinking of going, think again.
