“Very nice and comftorable hotel.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

My husband stayed at this hotel for a week in October. The hotel room was a one bedroom ocean view, with a full kitchen and a washer dryer. The ocean view wasn't much but the hotel room itself was like a little apartment. The screened in back porch got a lot of use and so did the kitchen. It needs a more up-to date TV, but who goes on vacation to watch TV? The pool is pretty nice and the beach is lovely! Make sure to get a car and hit the IGA (or take the shuttle) so you can make some meals at home because everything is expensive here. They were renovating while we were there and while obnoxious it didn't matter to much because we didn't stay in the room during the day unless there was rain. The staff is nice as well.

Originally made reservation hear because of cost; you get what you pay for. Grounds are nothing, pool is like a ymca, no front desk to speak of and accomodations were not up to par and most of the place was under renovation. Go to Seven Stars, trust me. If you are going to pay for a trip, the extra money at the Seven Stars is beyond worth it if you truly want to enjoy your trip.

We are disappointed to learn our property did not meet your expectations. We are even more saddened that you chose to write a review without even actually experiencing our hotel, resort or services since you checked out and stayed elsewhere. So many guests who have actually stayed at The Sands at Grace Bay have commented time and again about their satisfaction and true enjoyment of our resort, rooms, and our warm and friendly hospitality. We know we may not fit everyone’s choice of hotels understanding that each person has different tastes and needs however, we have one of the highest repeat guest ratios on the island because we have satisfied the majority of our guests.

We were very surprised to learn that you felt the grounds were not adequately landscaped. You can find, Hibiscus, Bougainvillea, Purple Ruellia, Yellow Allamanda, Croton, Ficus, Buttonwood and coconut trees just to name a few that create our lush tropical grounds. You can also find many pictures posted by trip advisor members of our grounds and pool. Though I have not been to a YMCA pool since I was a little kid, they must be pretty fancy now if you are comparing it to the ones at The Sands . We offer 3 pools and a hot tub. The main pool is ocean front with a kids pool attached. Our other pools are connected through a river system and features a waterfall with multiple private enclaves for guests enjoyment. Unfortunately, you were not able to experience any of these scenic, comfortable and relaxing areas. Another great area is coconut grove, where many guest enjoy a mid day siesta on our hammocks under our coconuts trees which provide natural shade.

All our guests check in and check out through our open air lobby, built to reflect a Barbadian style architectural design with coral rendering and travertine floors. We are currently renovating our bathrooms with an expected completion date of December 3rd 2012 with travertine floors, new bathtubs and/or showers and Kohler fixtures.

We just spent a week at Sands and, in all, had a good time. The first night we stayed in an un-renovated ocean view two bedroom (you could see a slice of the ocean from the balcony). The rest of our stay was in an ocean front 2 bedroom and it was worth every dime of the extra $95.00 ($114.00 with tax).

The pluses:
1. The beach is exquisite. Soft white sand, warm aqua blue/green waters made for the best beach ever.

2. The food at the restaurant, Hemmingway's, was good with a few exceptions. Forget about the conch fritters (see the review below) and the huevos rancheros. Breakfast and lunch were moderately priced but dinner was expensive. Service was friendly if a bit slow but, after all, you are on vacation and should be relaxed, not in a hurry. You can also take out but there is no room service.

2. The rooms were sizable but not huge. The living room and kitchen we large but the bedrooms were only average and the bathrooms (both renovated and non-renovated) small. The screened in terraces were sizable and deep enough one could remain out in the rain in not get wet. The furniture was very comfortable but firm enough for my bad back. The kitchen utensils and dishes were an odd mix. There were enough dishes and eating utensils, pots and pans but, no mixing bowls or hot pads. Management needs to inventory each kitchen. The bathroom towels were disappointingly scratchy, not at all deluxe. Housekeeping came at all hours, a couple of times after 2:00pm. In all, the rooms were a plus

3. The staff was uniformly friendly and helpful.

4. The grounds were kept immaculate.

5. The pools were small but perfectly suited to families with small children and/or those who prefer to lounge in the pool. Swimming laps is problematical.

The minuses:

1. Unless you rent a car, one must take a taxi to get anywhere else to eat or shop. We took a cab to the supermarket and it cost us $28.00 just to get there and back.

2. The construction noise was, at times, unbearable in the central courtyard/pool area. It may have taken a little extra time, but I do not understand why the new marble tiles could not have been measured on sight and cut on the table saw in a more remote location. My understanding is that the work is to go on until mid December.

3. Staff noise. It seems that some of the staff did not have enough to do or any where to go at times. During the day, the room next door was often used as a meeting place for staff. To facilitate entry, the door was left ajar by turning the dead bold. When staff members entered or departed the room, the closing door made a noisy banging sound which could be clearly be heard in our room. This was very annoying and should be looked into. It got to the point that I had to knock the door and ask them to close the door quietly. This cut the bangs by only one half.

For us, the pluses vastly out weighed the minuses. The property is very comfortable without being pretentious, casual without being sloppy. We feel that Sands is a good solid 4 out
of 5. We will certainly return, but not until the sawing and banging are over.

Room Tip: All of the rooms have washer/dryers except the studios. Pack accordingly.

My husband and I just returned from The Sands – stayed September 29 – October 5. Could not be happier.

Immigration was a breeze both coming and going…I am sure this is because of the time of year but it was a nice change from experiences we have had at other locations. We landed at 12:30 and arrived at the hotel at 1 pm. Our room, understandably, wasn’t ready as check-in is at 3 pm. No problem, there is a beautiful hospitality building which has restrooms and changing rooms (and showers) so we changed into bathing suits and enjoyed the beach and bar until 3 pm.

Resort

We had booked a studio garden view suite but were pleasantly surprised with a one bedroom upgrade. Very, very generous of the hotel. The room was beautiful. The furniture was not old or run down in the least as the previous reviewer mentions. It was not elaborate but very nice and comfortable. The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable and we had a great night sleep every night. The kitchens have everything you need….coffeemaker (with coffee the hotel provides if you prefer), toaster, blender, silverware, cookware and plates and glasses. We had breakfast on our patio or at the beach. Loved having coffee on the beach in the morning! Lunch was at Hemingways or on the patio again. And dinner was out each evening. The staff was attentive, friendly and welcoming. Always helpful when we had a question or needed information. There were renovations going on so it could be a bit noisy on our patio but you couldn’t hear anything at the pool, on the beach, at Hemingways or inside the room. They work on one building at a time so you are not staying in a building with work being done. A small price to pay for remodeled bathrooms!! The pictures they have in the lobby look like they will be beautiful.

Restaurants

For dinner we ate at Bay Bistro, Mango Reef (twice), Hemingways, The Deck and a place on Grace Bay Road, can’t recall the name (wasn’t very memorable). All were good….most, very good. Bay Bistro was probably the best but Mango Reef was a very, very close second. Maybe it was the wine!! I was surprised that Bay Bistro had Wente wine at an excellent price. We had planned to go back before we left but that didn’t happen. The Deck was also very good and we loved the location but the service left a little to be desired. The service wasn’t bad; we just felt we were bothering the person taking care of our table. A big pet peeve of mine, but it was the only time we had anything less than excellent service all week so I can’t complain.

The beach was everything we hoped for….incredibly blue water with flour soft sand. Peaceful and relaxing. We loved The Sands, a fantastic value for the area and would return in a heartbeat!!

My partner and i stayed at the Sands from September 11th - 16th 2012. After reading many reviews of similar properties on Trip Advisor, i decided that The Sands represented the best value and requirements for our stay -; Relaxation! After a short trip from the airport we arrived at Reception and were greeted by Sharmara and offered a Rum Punch. The staff were all friendly and accommodating and my first impressions of the venue were very positive. Our room was exactly what i had seen in the pictures and was kept immaculate by housekeeping on a daily basis. The kitchenette was a fantastic addition as you are not forced to eat out which can become costly quickly, and you are a ten minute walk to the local grocery store. Another great feature is the ice machine in the Hospitality centre, so we always had chilled drinks in our room. The facilities are fantastic! 3 generous sized pools, free non motorized equipment (the bikes are very handy!) as well as Hemingway's restaurant, which was reasonably priced with great tasty food. The beach is breathtaking and right on your door step and the weekly Managers party on Tuesday is a great way to mingle with other guests and enjoy free drinks and delicious food. Overall, The Sands is a perfect unpretentious resort, with friendly staff and excellent facilities. It may not be the newest resort but it has charm and genuine hospitality!! I'll definitely be back and cant wait to watch the sunset with a glass of wine on the shoreline as we did daily!!

Room Tip: All rooms are spacious but perhaps ask for a renovated bathroom. We were also upgraded on check in s...

I was in Provo frome Sept 9th-16th. I had an amazing opportunity to stay @ this wonderful resort. On arrival my I was greeted with a wonderful rum punch, which I admitted I went back for a few times during my stay. I was greeted by wonderful reception staff Shamara ,Adrian & a very hepful concierge Terry. Rhianna was great during the blackout..Kudo's. I found Ms. Pearlene to an amazing housekeeping supervisor as well. We lacked for nothing, eveeryone checked in to see how your stay was going. My room was kept spotless by the hard working staff. Beach staff were great..no need to rush to hold chairs or water equipment. This is a place where one recieves old school hospitality. Bikes were a nice treat to pick up items from IGA(Gourmet Foods). Also a shout out to Barbara the Manager..who was awesome. Coming from Canada a country where we are tres hospitable, is the feeling I got from this hotel..safety, comfort & the graciousness of TCI love & warmth. I will keep my sunny memories till I return again..REAL SOON..promise..Thank you / Merci staff for making my stay AWESOME
