“Wonderful holidays”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2013

Recently spent Christmas at this resort and loved it! Condominium suites allow you to stock up from the local grocery store, but the restaurant at the resort also had good food. All the staff were very friendly and responsive. Discovered that the best part of the holiday week was Boxing Day (December 26th) when they had a holiday for the locals, not the tourists. Parade of local groups, local music, local crafts people, and open BBQ venues selling native foods... much better than usual tourist fare and less expensive. "Island time" is very slow, one just has to get in a vacation mind frame.

Room Tip: Request a suite with full kitchen and sitting. Ocean view is well worth it.

I spent 4 nights at Royal West Indies in January 2013. My first impression was that the front desk ladies could be more polite and less selfabsorbed. At the very beginning we found lots of hair in a bathtub and a dirty floor under under a sink. Cutlery, in a kitchenett, had some pieces of old food on it. A bed frame had clumps of dust above our heads that looked a little scary. A restaurant was fine and waiters, especially Derek, were very professional. Calvin was always nice and helpful. Enjoying the sea was the best part of our stay at Royal West Indies. Grace Bay has impeccably clean and warm water.

Thank you for your recent comments regarding your stay at Royal West Indies Resort. I apologize if you did not have a good experience with the front desk staff. We conduct training on regular basis in order to improve the guest experience. The front desk is an important operating department for any resort and we will review your comments with the staff at our next meeting.

Rooms are checked more three times prior to a guest arrival and linen are changed on a regular basis during the guests stay at the resort. We are somewhat surprised on your comment regarding the cleanliness of the room. This has already been reviewed with senior managers and housekeeping staff.

Royal West Indies is one of the highest rated hotel properties on Turks and Caicos and within the region which has been a testament to our focus on customer service and product excellence.

We look forward to hopefully seeing you again at RWI in the near future.

As a repeat visitor who never fails to have a great time at the Royal West Indies, I will focus on the special moments and memories. The surf was quite exciting this time, and I saw Vigilis, the gentle giant of the beach staff, prevent an imminent disaster as a father and son attempted to launch a kayak in the waves. The beach staff are always on high alert,to provide guests with seating in their choice of location, fresh towels as needed, and an umbrella for protection. They assist folks with the Hobie Cats as needed. . . always accommodating and cheerful.
This year I stayed in building 7, and my room was impeccably clean each day, and I found a gift of chocolate coffee beans on my bed, and a Christmas greeting from the hotel management-a thoughtful momento.
Christmas Dinner catered to a variety of preferences, ranging from traditional turkey dinner to the Catch of the Day. The latter choice became my new favourite; the fish was cooked to perfection, and snapper tastes like a milder version of halibut steak.
Markenson got into the Christmas mood by having guests guess the ingredients in a drink called the Triple P, and Calvin served a steady stream of this treat to the thirsty beach lovers. Calvin's friendly personality and sense of humour,as well as his ability to spot empty glasses makes him a welcomed sight.
The Pig Roast on the beach was aesthetically pleasing to both the eyes and the taste buds. Chef Peter, one of the top chefs in the Caribbean, patiently flavoured and basted while his staff set up a bar, buffet, and music. Lanterns and strings of lantern lights , the warm breeze, the soft sand, and the music created a setting that is only seen in travel magazines.
One family faced the challenges of catering to their octogenarian mother who was a challenge to please, but the new breakfast staff member had her smiling and hugging in no time, and Derrick came to the rescue several times with information, ideas, and suggestions. Sonja is a hit with her customers, and they look for her at meal time. Not one patron had a negative comment to share about their dining experience, and one lady mentioned the professionalism of the waiters as a whole. People who live a fast-paced life find it a challenge to relax and adjust to a more relaxed environment, and may mumble about slow service until they are gently reminded that the whole point of a vacation is to unwind, savour the moment, and connect with the people that surround them. Many teachers enjoy this resort!
The musical entertainment provided at the evening meals was appreciated. One couple, who had taken dance lessons, were celebrated for their prowess and grace, and the music of Stanley Roots and Gordon Lightbourne matched their style. Couples cuddled on the new outdoor seating, and savoured the ambiance created by the tiki torches, fire pit, and easy listening music.
The physical size of this resort enhances conversations among willing patrons, and the bar is a comfort zone for both children and adults. Children enjoy the strawberry smoothies, chocolate milkshakes, and other refreshing choices, and adults appreciate the choices of wine, beer, and speciality drinks. The bar tenders aim to please and quickly remember the guests' preferences . A new gentleman has joined the morning bar staff, and his friendly demeanour and ready smile are an infectious way to start the day.
People who are repeat visitors reconnect each year, and families with children get to know each other in this safe and friendly setting. The children are respectful, enjoyable, and a welcomed source of entertainment. For those who seek peace and quiet, this resort accommodates that need as well.
There is nothing nicer than the friendly "Welcome back! How have you been? " from the wonderful staff at the Royal West Indies.

Room Tip: Building 7 is near the front office, and the balcony offers a view of the quiet pools and jacuzzi. I...

My husband and I spent a week at this resort with our extended family ages 19-80 and we all had a relaxing time. The grounds and facilities were beautiful and well kept. Staff very friendly. Beach gorgeous. It was great having a washer/dryer in the room - so you don't have to pack too much! My only complaint is in regards to the restaurant/bar on the property. We understand that we were on "island time" but service seemed quite slow at times. It would also have been nice to have received information on our arrival of the restaurant/bar specials occuring that week. They had several outside BBQ's during our stay that we would have partaken of, but we didn't know about them and we had already made reservations at other restaurants. All in all it was a great stay and our family plans to return next year.

My husband and I decided to skip Christmas this year and spend the holiday relaxing on a beach. We made up our minds a few weeks before Christmas and discovered that we didn't have a lot of choice in terms of properties. Luckily one of our choices was the Royal West Indies Resort. The property is absolutely gorgeous with many smaller, intimate areas to find some privacy. Our room had an amazing oceanview with a great balcony to watch the sunsets. The room was very clean and it was really nice to have a fridge and microwave to prepare snacks and small meals. The bed was devine and provided many nights of restful sleep. The beach was very close and offered some of the softest, white sand I've ever seen. Our first few days we had no problem finding beach chairs or umbrellas but as the place started to fill up for the holiday we noticed that people would go out very early and stake their claim. We realized that either we also went early or waited until lunch when people would leave. Our weather was a little overcast with a few scattered showers for a couple of days and this was actually a relief. I had no idea how hot Turks and Caicos was - normally 28 degrees but with the humidity feeling like 38 degrees. My only critique is that there is one restaurant and one bar. Don't get me wrong - there was happy hour every day and the staff excelled at offering special nights like the beach BBQ and bonfire and special Christmas dinner. The food was always very good but it's nice to eat in a different venue for the change. There were a couple of restaurants "within walking distance". And I say this with caution because I am not a walker and the distance would have been pushing my comfort limit. Unfortunately, we could not get a reservation because they were booked throughout our stay. We did escape one night to Mango Reef but the taxi fare was $10 each way. There is a grocery store which has been described as being a 15 minute walk away - and I would definitely challenge this. Maybe a 15 minute bike ride. Bikes are available to borrow. The cost of food and alcohol is pricey but comparable to other Carribean islands. I also found the front desk staff not very helpful and almost snarly at times. There was a tour desk but we only found it staffed one day and it would have been nice to have a little more help with choosing restaurants and helping with reservations. I should also mention that I arranged a massage in our room for my husband through SpaTropique and he felt it was one of the best he has ever had. All in all I would definitely recommend a visit to Turks and Caicos and to The Royal West Indies Resort.

We arrived Saturday after Thanksgiving at RWI for a peaceful and relaxing vacation. This was a quiet week at the resort.Temperatures were absolutely perfect low 80's day, low 70's night, no humidity.

About the Resort:
Bedding was comfortable. All units are equipped with Kitchens and big screen TV with all the Miami cable channels. You can't go wrong with any building you stay in, the resort only has 8 buildings and they are in close proximity to each other. We stayed in building 2 on the ground floor which is next to the beach. This was very convenient if you wanted to grab something quick in your room to bring on the beach.

All the guest services were friendly and courteous. Some go out of their way to please you. (Sherman, Calvin, Noel, Andrea). The front desk was very helpful when we needed a restaurant reservation, a car rental or taxi. The resort had WIFI throughout the property including the Beach.

The food at the Pelican restaurant was adequate. There are slightly better choices along the beach. There are several hotels that you can easily walk to along the beach. One nice lunch spot was the Grille Rouge at Grace Bay Club ( a 5 minute walk on the beach). They had many different choices of salads and sandwiches. I especially like the nice pillowed chairs to sit on while you eat.

At the RWI The Bikes were fun to reserve and ride down to the really NICE! IGA Grace Gourmet supermarket, You could also easily reach the shopping areas (Salt Mills) which is a 10 minute bike ride down the road. This is the type of island where you feel safe anywhere you go.

On the beach, there were no problems finding chairs and umbrellas. The Hobbie Cats were fun and took them out 3 times a day. These are very easy to sail. if you don't have any experience, the beach and pool guys will take you out and give you instruction.

Restaurants that we ate at are:
Cocoa Bistro (Expensive, but worth experiencing the romantic setting in the palm trees)
Bacis (Good Italian restaurant)
Mango Reef (Best food and drinks. The 8oz sirloin was like filet mignon)
Conch Shack (Right on the beach, Go for the experience of eating fresh Conch and interacting with very friendly people)
Pelican Bay (For Dinner, order something off the menu, the Buffets are not that good and worth the money. Breakfast is excellent!, Lunch is adequate. Try the Conch Fritters)

Most of the other guests we talked to has stayed at the RWI multiple times. Some stay more than a week. This is a hidden gem which is very reasonable compared to the other expensive resorts on the island. If you looking for a laid back atmosphere and a place to relax, this resort is your choice! After spending one week, we were ready for another week. WE'LL BE BACK!!.
Can't wait for to see Calvin and drink those Mohitos again.

Room Tip: if you want to be close to the beach, pick buildings 1,2,3. If you want to be close to the pool, pic...

Stayed here for 5 days and loved every minute of it. From the cold drink awaiting us at checkin to the most caring staff constantly asking and reassuring that "You're all right?" "Can I get you anything....have a great day...." wonderful accomodations in the form of condos, daily maid service made them immaculately clean, well manicured and beautiful plantings and gardens, good food, great bar and cocktail area, gorgeous beach wonderfully outfitted and attended, on beautiful aquamarine colored water. We could walk for miles in either direction and wade in the warm waters at will. What more could one ask for. Pools were beautiful but a bit too cold, would have preferred heated pools, but everything surrounding it was so beautiful, we tolerated it without complaint. Management and staff deserve high praise. They work diligently to make your stay pleasant, all day long.
It isn't cheap but the value is good, given you are on an island.
Close to excellent restaurants if you want a change of scenery for dinner or a jaunt down the beach for breakfast on the beach...300 yards or so away.

Room Tip: Building 4 is perfect on second floor looking at the ocean...just perfect, but there were no bad spo...
