“Royal WOW”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2012

We stayed at the Royal West Indies with our two daughters aged 8 and 12 and found every as aspect of our visit exceptional. From the moment we were greeted by the friendly front-desk staff to when we saw our spacious two-bedroom suite, we felt like we were being pampered. The location of this resort is perfect - right in the heart of Grace Bay. Plus, the resort has everything you - need - a great restaurant, two pools, plenty of room on the beach, free bikes to use and fun toys to use in the ocean (Kayaks, floats and a hobie cat). Every morning the cleaning staff would give us a friendly greeting and ask if we needed anything. I loved the fact that there was a full kitchen in our room and a washer and dryer. I could live here!

If you are looking for a family-friendly place to stay in Grace Bay that has a great location, friendly staff and reasonable prices - Royal West Indies is the perfect choice.

Travelled with a girlfriend-booked a room---oceanview with King Size bed (confirmed on reservation). Asked for two doubles. At check in we asked if we could get the two doubles and were told we had. Room had a queen size bed. We called the front desk and were told there were no doubles so we asked to be moved to what we had booked--there were no rooms. The only room was an ocean front-same floorplan. We had to move to that room and pay an extra 300.00 to get the king size bed that we had booked. Since we had booked ocean view and this was ocean front we had to pay the difference. The hotel refused to work with us and told us that special requests were considered but not guaranteed. The king size bed that we paid for was not a special request----we have a printout showing that is what we booked. The two doubles were the special request! We also reported bugs in our room and were simply told we must have left the door open (they were in my friend's hair!!). We had to call twice one night when the safe stopped working to get someone to open it. The resort is clean, the housekeeping and wait staff is very very friendly, but the fact that we did not get what we reserved and had to pay 300.00 more is NOT acceptable.

Room Tip: Book it somewhere else.

We stayed here for 6 amazing nights at the end of June thru the start of July. This is my first Tripadvisor review, and I decided to write it because Tripadvisor was so helpful on our trip to Turks and Caicos. The RWI location was awesome right on Grace Bay Beach, and yes the sand really is that white and the water that blue. The staff was super friendly and greeted us with some glasses of tasty Rum Punch. The free wifi in the rooms was so nice to look up places to eat and get some emailing done with everyone at home. We had a garden view room across from the pool in building six, we loved the location close to the parking lot and close to the beach.

Some of the reviews on here people complain about the pettiest things. Sure there are some mosiquitos but you cant fault the RWI for that, just buy some off. And yes some of the building are a walk from the beach, but from the front of the property to the beach is probably a 4 minute walk max even for the oldest of visitors. The pelican bay restaurant is pricey, but so is every single restaurant on the Island. Come on people nothing is grown here its all flown in expect to pay more. Bring some snacks and off from home. The value of the RWI was amazing and I liked the small size. Walking down the beach and looking at some of the larger resorts I was very happy with our choice. Take the walk down the beach and eat at the Deck at the Seven Stars resort.

We didn't use the bikes as we had a rental car, and after getting over the shock of driving on the left I would say rent a car. It allows you a ton of flexibility and you don't have to wait around for the taxis. Also the airport is old school but not nearly as slow as a ton of people have described it. We will go back.... Yes and yes we will stay at the RWI.

We stayed at RWI for a week in June. The weather was perfect, and we enjoyed our trip. The hotel was exactly what we needed. A nice place to stay; rooms were clean, fridge and micro a plus, great location, family pool and “quiet pool”, onsite restaurant and bar. Beyond this there are a few things we learned along the way that might be helpful to knpw(and we didn’t read in other posts)…
1- The walk to the grocery store is fairly short (15 min) and will save some cash (seeing as you have a fridge and microwave in your room)…
Tip- instead of walking the street (which can get much hotter away from the cool ocean breeze) walk the beach… use the beach access next to the 7 stars resort to cut through the hotels and it will take you to the traffic loop that leads to the store. We figured this out on our second trip and it literally made the walk to the store a stroll on the beach.
2- Lets cut to the chase… everything on TCI is expensive, food included (at the restaurant or at the store).
Tip- we found that the onsite restaurant was good for breakfast, we packed our own lunch and snacks to maximize beach/excursion time, and had dinner out in town. For what you pay you can get a much better dinner out on the town.
3- We went back and forth on if we should make the trek to Mudjin Harbor… so glad we did it!! Our number 1 favorite day on the islands!
Tip- take lots of snacks (maybe a bottle of rum:)) for the day… when you get to the harbor you wont want to leave and there are no services around. Be sure to take the trail to the top of the sea-cave for a wonderful “hidden” surprise!

My husband and I stayed at the RWI Resort from June 23-June 30. I previously rated the resort when we last stayed in September 2010. While this was our third stay at the resort, it was our first stay as guests of the property. We previously stayed in 2005 when we rented unit 123 privately through VRBO. We later stayed in 2010, again renting privately through VRBO, staying in unit 131. While we found unit 635 on VRBO, we were immediately sent an email from the resort as they manage the property for the owners. Each unit in this resort, and most all of the developments on the island, are owned individually. Keep this in mind, as we have certainly encountered vast differences in the amenities of each of the three units that we have stayed in. Having said that, unit 635 was exactly as the pictures in the VRBO listing, a basic one-bedroom unit. The previous unit (unit 131) was more like someone's home, completely outfitted with everything you could need, including a fridge full of condiments. What we did enjoy about renting this particular unit was dealing directly with the hotel. We were sent a confirmation and had to give a deposit of 3 nights. We did not pay the balance of our stay until we checked-out. This was nice knowing that you were dealing directly with the RWI Resort, as opposed to an individual owner where you often have to pay 50% down, then the remainder 30 days before you arrive.

We have always found the staff to be friendly. Now that we were guests of the resort and had to check in, we were immediately greeted with smiles and hello's from all staff in reception. They immediately brought us water and a rum punch. Since our room was not ready at 2:00pm, we headed off to the IGA in our rental car that we rented through Grace Bay Car Rentals (fantastic to deal with). By the time we returned, we waited a few minutes more and our room was ready. Within an hour of getting settled, reception called us to see if we needed anything. We also received a call the night before our departure, inquiring if we needed any transportation to the airport. Overall, everyone from restaurant, bar, reception, cleaning staff, beach staff, and gardeners, was very friendly.

The grounds of this resort get more mature and more beautiful with each return trip that we make. This resort happens to be one of our most favourite resorts, for many reasons. We like the location on Grace Bay, that the resort sits on a beautiful stretch of wide beach with gorgeous, crystal clear water. The property itself is comprised of 8 low-rise buildings, all set on the most beautifully landscaped property that we have seen. Yes, there are far more expensive and luxurious properties to stay at, but I have not seen any grounds that compare to the breathtaking landscaping that this property has achieved. When you are in the quiet pool, looking around the the landscape surrounding, you can barely see the buildings in the background. This is the type of property that comes to mind when I think of Caribbean-style architecture.

The resort was about 80% occupied during the week that we stayed. We often frequent the island in September, and are used to about a dozen or so guests. The island was busy. Not as busy as our last trip In February 2011, but pretty close!

There was a mix of young couple, families, and older couples. We generally find that most of the guests are generally quiet and respectful of others. It has a nice laid-back atmosphere which we really enjoy. The weather was great, sunny and hot all week long, and comfortable in the evenings. What a wonderful week of relaxation, great food, and the most beautiful beach that I have ever seen. It just doesn't get any better than this! Watch out for the potcakes (the stray dogs) on the roads and have a wonderful time. Hope you find the beauty that we have found with this great property.

I included a photo of North West Resort which we visited just to see the beach there. While the beach was deserted, and not a soul to be found at this resort, except a friendly gardener, when we left the eerie beach (trust me, the water was the strangest colours of green and blue, and the water looked angry!) to return to our car, we saw the most amusing site - a big, beautiful potcake sitting about two steps into the pool. I quickly took out my camera, but the stray dog had already gotten out and I snapped a photo anyways.

Room Tip: I would avoid buildings 3, 4, and 5, as they might be too close to the restaurant/bar area. There is...

We stayed at RWI from June 19 -22, 2012. We are retired and traveled from Toledo, OH. We flew Jet Blue from JFK to PLS. Be prepared to deplane via the jetstairs onto the tarmac and not a jetbridge. We overheard that the international terminal will be expanded. The taxi ride was 20 minutes from the airport and cost $15/pp. The Pelican restaurant served delicious cracked conch, conch chowder, red snapper and also BBQ ribs with Bambarra Rum sauce. Mario, Marcus, Calvin, Jerome, Deandra and Sherman were great at the RWI. The resort was very quiet and lovely. Free WIFI.
Make sure you carry everything you need because you cant purchase sundries at RWI. However, you can take a taxi or ride a bike into the shopping areas approx. two miles away. Great Experience at RWI.

Room Tip: We suggest getting a ground level room since there were no elevators.

We stayed here for a week in a 1 bedroom botanical view and had a lot of worries before we got there about our choice of room. We have never been to the beach and not had a beach front or view before. All these worries were a waste of time; we were in building 8 the furthest back from the beach and enjoyed the trees and view of the pool. We were only a short walk through the resort past both pools and the restaurant to get to the beach and we enjoyed the walk. We saw so many beaches during the day we did not want to see anymore when we got to our room.
This resort is a good choice very nice and clean with all you will need, just the right size not too big or small at the same time. There are more expensive options but you can go wrong with RWI. Free Wifi, free towels and chairs at the beach, free water sports (kayak, sail boat, snorkel gear).

Pros: great beach, real nice restaurant that was not too expensive (compared to others), the free stuff on the beach as I mentioned above, no having to tip someone to set up your chair or give you a towel. Rooms are perfect.

Cons: the customer service is not great, but I am not sure if that is because they are not trained properly or if they are rude and do not care. I believe it is not training though.

Tips: Pack food for breakfast and snacks, eating out is very expensive as everyone has said. Their restaurant Pelican Bay, is very reasonable compared to others.

Room Tip: I think only building 1 is truly ocean front, don't worry too much about the room view, you are...
