On December 14, 2011 our cruise stopped at Grand Turk. Since our scuba excursion was cancelled due to high winds by the cruise line, we decided to visit Governors Beach since the cruise line had a beach & snorkel excursion to this destination and we brought our mask, snorkel, and fins. We were told it was a five minute taxi ride or half hour walk. We decided to take a taxi to the beach, I wouldn't suggest walking from the port to the beach, you will most likely have to walk along the street. Governors Beach is a public beach so there is no charge. They had free beach lounge chairs available to use for laying out. There were high winds so when snorkeling I could barely see my hands. Visibility was horrible. My partner snorkeled out past the buoys, almost to a dive boat, to try to see something. The visibility was a little better but not worth the extra effort and the worry of having to watch out for boats. I wouldn't suggest Governors Beach in high winds for snorkeling, you will be disappointed. If you like to lay out and stay on land this would be the perfect place. There was a little place where you could buy drinks (pop and beer) from (but when I asked for a water I was told they didn't have any yet and it was coming). There was also someone cooking food on the grill. My best guess is these people are only here when the cruise ship is in port because the island is very small.
