I just returned from Blue Waters Inn (3 couples, 3 rooms) and was disappointed although the location is beautiful. When it stormed one night there were major leaks in the restaurant making some tables unusable and creating a large puddle the servers had to wade through. We water also came under the door of one of the rooms and even using all the towels in the room wasn't enough - they had to be wrung out and replaced continuously. One room had a toilet that didn't work. Ours worked most of the time, but two outlets didn't. The sink had an ugly black crack in it, and the painter had slopped the blue paint from the walls on the tiles in the bathroom - no masking tape used. The air conditioner was so noisy we couldn't hear the sound of the waves at night although we were right on the beach. No option of a ceiling fan, and if you open the windows, no screens so the bugs come in, so you may need the air conditioning. The bed slanted on one side so it was like sleeping on a slide. The sheets were too small to tuck in properly so by morning we were usually on the bare mattress. While they sweep up the leaves in the driveway each morning, they are less concerned about the beach which has plastic bottles, styrofoam, and other trash - though less than beaches in Trinidad.
Service in the restaurant was very slow. One morning it took an hour from the time we sat down to get a standard breakfast of scrambled eggs and bacon. If you read the menu on line, don't start salivating. Many of the items will be unavailable, with no apologies, just a curt, "No chicken" or "No key lime pie".
In three days (including glass bottom boat ride and a snorkle trip) I never saw those sea turtles others wrote about, so don't count on them.

“Don’t Stop The Carnival”

Blue Waters Inn

Jun 4, 2008

This Inn is a true time warp!

Now I know how Norman Paperman must have felt when he took over the Gull Reef Club in Herman Wouk’s book “Don’t stop the Carnival”

A true flashback to the Caribbean how it was, when time stood still throughout your holidays. No phone, no TV, just a gorgeous bay, a small and intimate beach, a ‘Shipwreck Bar” for great cocktails, a restaurant called “Gold Doubloon”, serving nice food, a simple room ON the beach. Every day you swim with wild turtles a few yards off the beach, you go diving with Manta Rays and you go bird watching with Newton George, a man with telescopic vision, who shows you the beautiful birds of the rainforest.

Matt, the guy in charge, tells us that for next year they will also have mountain bikes and big seagoing kayaks. I am looking forward to it!

While you are there, book a day or two at Asa Wright in Trinidad. Between these two inns they have the Caribbean nature covered!

Keep it up, don’t stop the carnival!

“Blue Waters Inn - Speyside”

Blue Waters Inn

Toronto, Canada

Blue Waters Inn is a little piece of tropical heaven in the quieter northern side of the island. Our room was a ground floor with terrace about 50 feet from the beach. It is a great walking and sunning beach. The staff was courteous and helpful esp. The decor is fresh and blue. No phones in the room. No alarm clocks. Near to rainforests and great beaches like Parlatuvier and Englishman's Bay and Castara. The rainforest and Little Tobago (brain coral and seabirds) are at your doorstep.

It is about a two hour drive from the airport best done in daylight to see all the stunning views and hairpin turns with a new beach at every turn. The hotel will arrange a shuttle for you and simply add it to your bill.

This part of the island gives the traveller a taste of the real Caribbean - before the advent of big four star hotels and non stop action. Come here for nature and to nurture your soul.

Do go for a hike up the Argyle River and take a refreshing dip in Argyle Waterfalls.

Do go into town and eat at the local restaurants esp. Jemma's with its shutters open to sea breezes and its 200 year old almond tree and do savour the fresh shrimp and lobster and breadfruit pie and ginger beer.

Spend a day with Simon touring towns and secluded beaches. He is a gentleman and naturalist and so informative and ready to fashion the tour to suit you (Simon McLetchie Tours-www.tobago-adventure.com)

Highly recommed this hotel and this area of the island.

“My holidays”

Blue Waters Inn

May 6, 2008

I have read the comments on this hotel on a few web sites before going on holidays. I am a restaurateur who loves to dive, but I also love to eat and have a good time when I go on holidays, so I was very worried about the food comments in some of the reviews. Thankfully, I thought, we could always go to the other, local restaurants, which have been highlighted by previous commentators.
On out first day at Blue Waters Inn, we hesitantly sat down to lunch, and were surprised at the very good quality of food served. We then tried dinner the same day and were even more surprised at the choice and quality of the food.
It is right that you do not always get a smile from the staff, but we have seen this in many Caribbean islands before.
We were approached by other guests, dive buddies, to join them in the most famous restaurant in Speyside, “Jemma’s”. Now that was a real disappointment!
It took us a while to understand the other commentators, who “disliked “the food at Blue Waters Inn and “recommend” the food in the village.
This has nothing to do with the quality of the food served at the hotel. What the other commentators want is “cheap food”, which is not available in the hotel, but can be purchased in the village of Speyside. It is part of our life as restaurateurs to be discredited by customers who are not willing to spend what our menus require to sustain our operations; it is unfair though to “bad talk” a restaurant’s quality of food and service because one is not willing to spend the monies necessary.
It would be nice to advise other people on this site to ensure that they understand the difference between cheap food and local food. The hotel has some lovely local food on the menu and on the Friday night buffet with the steel band music entertainment.
I agree with the other comments about the rooms. They are clean, but they really need to be renovated. I talked to the manager, Matt, who met us at the hotel bar every evening of our stay, who confirms that the owners of the hotel have decided to renovate the rooms. This would be really nice!
This hotel is all about nature; our kids were playing with four wild turtles in the hotel bay every day!!! We saw the largest manta ray of our diving career. The amount of birds and other wild creatures in this small spot is amazing!
Do NOT go to this hotel, if your idea of a nice holiday is a cheap, all-inclusive, two mile long, white beach with four twenty-four hours buffets going all the time.
If you are looking for a different, remote place that invites you to rest, to come close to nature, to enjoy the simple joys of life, this place is for you!

“what a sad place”

The hotel was recommended to us by two different people, but what a sad place it turned out to be. The facilities are ok, rooms look fine, beach is just in front, restaurant looks ok too and everything is clean. But the staff is not friendly at all, they are not service minded and even worse, they don't seem to like tourists. Management does not help by just hanging around. Rooms and meals are overrated, it pays to leave the hotel and go to a nearby restaurant. While there is so much fruit on the island, it seems to be very difficult to prepare a healthy breakfast.

The place has a lot of potential. But today it just does not have a 'soul' and for less money you can have more fun anywhere else.
