I booked the Hilton for my (now) husband's belated birthday present - his birthday was in the January.

We travelled with Virgin Holidays whom I would highly recommend, especially their 'check in, chill out' service at the hotel on our last day. We went for a little luxury travelling upper class out and premium economy back - worth the extra money.

The hotel was very nice and we had booked a Jacuzzi suite which gave us a large bedroom with bath/shower and plenty of space, a sitting room with shower room and, again, plenty of space, and two terraces, one with our own private jacuzzi which we made use of every day!

We went on a room only basis and I have to confess food and drink at the hotel was very expensive. For the price of two drinks and a toasted sandwich at the beach bar, we could get a taxi down to the cafe near Pigeon Point, have lunch each including dessert and 3 or 4 bottles of beer each.

The annoyance was that if, like us, you like to 'pay as you go' for things you buy at the hotel, the bars never had any change first thing in the morning and would want you to sign for drinks and food. We refused to do this many times as we didn't want bills mounting up. However, we did end up having to do it a number of times and were shocked to get a message from front desk asking us to settle the TT$3000 that we had run up before we could have any more 'credit'!! I think this is a standard thing but not something we were used to - mostly any incidentals are settled when guests leave, not when they reach a certain limit.

We did eat in the hotel twice and really didn't find it impressive. We tried the two main restaurants but then decided to eat out and had a fabulous meal every night in a different location. We used the Cre Ole book that the hotel has in the lobby which is free and gives example menus from all the local restaurants. The Seahorse, Bonkers, etc were all excellent with good service and much higher quality food than the Hilton.

We were on the 'sandy' part of the beach which is left fairly rough looking as it's where the turtles nest which added to it's charm. We only went to the pool twice for a few hours as it was always pretty crowded and we preferred the quiet of the beach. I understand topless sunbathing is not encouraged in Tobago and it was really quite a horrible sight to see the biggest, most overweight women 'swinging' around by the pool - one view I certainly could have lived without.

We had a wonderful trip to the rain forest on a mini bus with a chap who was a former monk and was a wealth of information and fun. Swimming in the fresh water pool beneath a waterfall was excellent...and cold! :) We also visited the treehouse restaurant which was nice to see but dreadful food but it really is a 'coach stop' in it's catering style.

We had one or two minor grumbles about things in the hotel, ie. getting to the managers cocktail party about 40 minutes after it started to find all the food had gone but they were quick to listen and do something about it, including a free bottle of champagne and flowers to apologise. The following week there was plenty of food.

The people in Tobago are fantastic. It never ceased to amaze me the smiles and greetings we got. The fun was hailing your local taxi and jumping in with the driver and his family and the shopping and whizzing up to your hotel for 1/5th of the cost of the hotel taxis. If you can be bothered to walk to the hotel main entrance on the road, you will save a fortune in taxi fares.

Overall, we had a wonderful time. It rained every day for about 30-60 minutes but we just sat and had a drink or swam whilst that happened. It was hardly cold! :)

We loved Tobago and are going back this year (2008) but to try a different hotel.

Have just returned from a weeks stay at the Hilton and coud not fault anything there. Yes there is rust but on the exterior of the buildng, which is the result of the hotel being on the ocean front. This however does not affect the holiday itself. The rooms were comfortable and spotless. The food, especially in the Coral Reef Restaurant was superb and the staff there were very attentive and extremely polite. The pace is a lot slower than at home but if you go to the Caribbean be prepared to adapt. We visited the Caribbean beach at Pigeon Point but still preferred the location of the Hilton. The beach was deserted and the breeze very welcoming. We would not hesitate to return to this hotel again.

My wife and I have just returned from a two week stay at the Hilton Tobago. Having read the reviews on Trip Advisor we were very concerned that we were about to face the holiday from hell. It was far from that.

Don't get me wrong, the comments about the rust are accurate. But they can be explained by the Atlantic air that you also get the benefit of when sitting by the pool. And there were one or two people on the staff who could have been friendlier. But having travelled across a lot of the world, I can safely assue you that this is not a trait unique in Tobago.

But our experience overall was a very positivie one. Particularly the Coral Reef restaurant, where the staff were extremely attentive and the food of a good standard (although portion control was somewhat "American").

We went to the hotel to have a relaxing break and got that. We settled ourselves into the Caribbean pace of life and went with the flow. It was lovely.

“Knock it down and start again”

This is the third Hilton I've stayed in and the third one that made me very disappointed. On arrival I notice the state of the place while having to wait nearly twenty minutes at reception to check in. I know it was a busy time (6:30pm) so I was patient and didn't make a fuss. We were shown to our rooms by the bell boy who assured us that we had a very good room. It wasn't the best as that was already booked but it was good. We had a one bedroom for myself, my husband and our two children. On the walk down to the room I noticed the rust of the property and how unkept it was so of course we were very apprehensive as how this room would look. The doors were opened and although it wasn't great it wasn't totally bad. We then had to wait a further ten minutes to get the pull out bed put together as the staff had to wait for permission from the managers or owners. Once that was done we were left alone to order room service which was prompt and really nice. I called for the tray to be collected and left it outside, the next morning it was gone but we did receive a call asking if we would like our tray collect!
The staff on a while were pleasant. There were a few that you felt like telling to find a new job as the present one made them so miserable. But one thing that really upset me was seeing mattresses left out in the open in dark and dingy corners. I fear that these were to be used with sofa beds. In one instance I saw a baby's cot left outside including the mattress. Not nice.
Cleaning was not up to standard and beds were not made properly. Overall the hotel is in serious need of a complete revamp. The Hilton name is not a name that I respect and would flock to.

This was my first trip to tobago and i stayed at the hilton - what a mistake. the room was very damp and 'musty'. first night had to call for towels. second night had to call for toilet paper, after about an hour they sent a box of tissues. overall service sucks. there's no maintenance being done to the structure, which is partiall rotted. i do not recommend this place to anyone.
