“very pleasant but not 5 star”

Coco Reef Resort

We stayed here out of school holidays and found there was plenty of room on the beach and also able to find shade as I can't sit in the sun. The lagoon is lovely and necessary as the water on the public beaches was quite rough,(they can be seen from the hotel) This hotel is a good 3 star but not 5 star, the food is not as bad as some have said we stayed 2 weeks and the menu in Tamaras restaurant was not repeated once. The buffet was good at lunchtime but got rather repetive in the evenings as there was not always a barbeque. We found people complaining they had to pay extra for Gordons gin etc., but it clearly states and is common practice that all inclusive means local spirits only, in any case the rum cocktails are excellent.
A special mention to the 2 boys on the beach who go up and down constantly with drinks fetching whatever you need including mineral water, they are delightful.
The room was a good 3 star and we had paid for Ocean view de luxe it had a good balcony and a very comfortable bed, the bathroom was dissapointing and rather small with very poor water pressure in the shower.
We travelled with Virgin and flights were excellent and the early check in at the hotel to return is a good idea as it saves too much queueing when you finally get to the airport. The departure lounge is extremely small and there were 3 flights going to the UK on a Thursday all at the same time so it was horrendous in there with not enough seats and virtually no AC.
The staff in the hotel were lovely and found them all to be very friendly and helpful, the manager however was not very nice at all, he strutted about all day ignoring guests who were first timers and sucking up to repeat guests, he also had a bad habit of telling off staff in front of guests which is quite unforvgivable.
Tobago is an unspoilt island and best for a relaxing holiday, if you want more to do I would suggest one week here and then go on to another island for a change which is what we will do if we go again. However we will go back to Florida (Marco Island near Naples) next year

“We just loved it”

Arrived very tired after long journey on 6th Jan, last ones in reception felt a bit like 'last choice' however very friendly staff made us extemely welcome, first impressions not great as we used Bacchanals’ restaurant first night ( not keen on buffet style) , our Deluxe room was supposed to offer sea view hard to verify when it's dark! Next morning greeted by great views out to sea thru the palm trees, oh boy was it worth the journey, early ( 6am ) walk on the very clean private beach confirmed our expectations, seeing other letters made us wary of insufficient beach capacity, but we must have been lucky as we never had any problems, same with Tamara’s food excellent, choice superb , service just what one expected from Caribbean, staff in most cases very friendly & helpful, overall a really great 11 days, one small point, it would have been just that much better to have a little more light in our room & a little less noise from the 'jet' engine style extractor fan in the bathroom..have just booked a return for 14 nights 2009, thus cannot be at all bad.

“Just love Coco Reef”

We stayed at the Coco Reef Hotel over Christmas/New Year and had a fantastic holiday. Being repeat guests they make you feel very special which is one of the reasons why we keep going back. The beach is very safe for kids of all ages and also very beautiful with the best snorkelling you could possibly wish for in the private lagoon. A bonus for us is that our teenage children are not approached by unwanted locals wanting to sell their wares or offer drugs as they cannot access the beach.
The food is excellent with a variety each night, and the lunch bbq is also really nice. The staff are incredibly friendly. Our accomodation was fantastic, serviced twice daily (which doesn't always happen in the Caribbean). Nothing you ask for is ever a problem and any maintenance is dealt with very quickly. The island is beautiful, unspoilt so do not expect the hustle and bustle of other Caribbean Islands as this is a really tranquil place. We are already booked for Christmas 2008/09!

Having just returned from the coco reef hotel tobago my wife and i just had to tell people about our fantastic time there. The hotel and staff were excellent. From our room to the food everything was delightful. As keen travellers we thought about going to tobago for a change from other caribbean islands and we were not to be disappointed it is a wonderful place with its laid back attitude and friendly local people.Unfortunatley the only thing to we found irritating was some of our fellow guests in the hotel who complained constantly about nothing this is tobago man.

p.s. hello to rod stewart when he stays there sorry we missed you.

“beware of your expectations”

Coco Reef Resort

If you want real luxury, pay a little more and have the real thing.

Good points:
- Sea, man made reef and lagoon
- Friendly staff - the hotel's best asset
- Location - close to airport

Bad points:
- Catering - insufficient tables and space for number of guests. Meals are therefore crushed / hurried with pressure for you to vacate table. Lunchtime has a school dinner feel. Food quality variable.

- Rooms - luckily we were upgraded by the hotel (although I thought this was what we had paid for). Our upgraded room needed a make over.

- Beach - small for number of guests

- Swimming pool very small for number of guests

- Evening entertainment - insufficient seating

- Ordering food/ drinks - constant issue with giving room number every time, even when all-inclusive. After 10 days this becomes very annoying. They ask to enable half-borders to be charged.

We had a good time despite all this but we're easy going.

Finally there were several repeat guests so I guess it comes down to personal taste / expectations. Personally we wouldn't go again or recommend to our friends.

Hope that's useful in helping you to decide.

p.s visit the Sea Horse restaurant at Black Rock
