I stayed at Kariwak on business with other colleagues for one night. In the short time I stayed there I was spoken to rudely by the owner of the hotel who accused me of not having enough intelligence to know better than to drink a beverage in a bottle in the pool. You would think that being in the hospitality industry he would have known better than to insult a a paying guest by speaking down to him that way. I was completely embarrassed!

Upon retiring that night, I slept on a double bed which can only be compared to the comfort of sleeping on an ironing board. During the night while adjusting my pillow, I almost got wrapped up in the electric chord of the overhead reading lamps which had dangling electric chords plugged in behind my head. The wall mount air-condition unit made noise all night and when I eventually fell asleep at 5 am, I was awakened at 6 am by noisy local birds which sound similar to geese cackling. After giving up on a good nights sleep, I dressed and decided to have an early breakfast, however upon walking towards the restaurant I almost stepped on a dead mouse on the pathway to the restaurant (I even took a picture on my cellular phone as evidence). That was really the last straw for me.

Overall, a terrible experience, hell would freeze over before I stay at this hotel again.

We at Kariwak Village would usually not seek to intervene in or dispute reviews written on the hotel, whether good or bad. We have full appreciation of the fundamental right of persons expressing themselves and their perceptions after staying at any establishment.

However, when it is that information relayed seeks to intentionally mislead review readers, and also created a completely skewed perception of the particular issue, we consider it important to respond.

In this case, we should point out that the writer of the review was asked on at least three occasions within the space of one hour that he should not take glass bottles or drink ware into the pool as it could pose a danger to himself and to others. He and his colleagues were also asked to appreciate the time of night (midnight) and the fact that other guests would have already been asleep.

Quite apart from ignoring the appeals, this gentleman and his group became loud and disorderly around the pool area, much to the discomfort of some guests and of course management.

It is worthwhile to point out that this was happening after the gentleman and his colleagues had returned from a night out. And the Chief Executive in fact asked this gentleman to “think about other guests even if not himself” because he was being loud, and was using glass ware in the pool.

As regards the lighting fixtures in our rooms, we cannot make sense of any claim that the cords pose a danger as they are always well away from the bed itself and usually bound to the wall. More than that, none of the cords hang as the lighting fixtures all have very short cords and are plugged directly in to wall sockets.

Our air-conditioning systems are all of the same brand and quality used in all hotels; a hum or buzz is expected, but certainly none of our systems create ‘noise’, due in part to routine servicing of all room equipment.

The guest also stated that he almost walked on a dead mouse on one of the footpaths. Rather than reporting it to hotel staff to ensure the problem was resolved, he took pictures!

We would remind him that we are a resort with over 100 species of plants and trees and countless species of birds, lizards and so on. There are occasions when some of these species may have to be removed from footpaths and this is why our Maintenance Department regularly, during the course of every day, scans the entirely facility for this and other problems.

And lastly, as regards the noisy local bird; this was in fact, the Cocrico, a protected bird and the national bird of Tobago. We actually feel honoured that this particular bird has made its home at Kariwak Village.

Again, while we appreciate and respect everyone’s right to express their views, we would only ask that they state the facts of the issue, rather than deliberately attempt to mislead the online public.

We have stayed regularly at Kariwak where returnees prevail, and represent a wide selection of world populace in terms of character, colour, and creed. All are welcomed in the same manner. Owner/management is always present and approachable and any problems are easily and happily addressed.

“A relaxing time at the Kariwak”

Kariwak Village Holistic Haven and Hotel

Spent 4 nights at the Kariwak Village Hotel in March 2008. We were allocated Room 5B. Many of the rooms are actually semi-bungalows constructed in a rustic "ajoupa" style and situated in the beautiful, lush, tranquil grounds of the hotel. The room was spacious, simply decorated and furnished in a rustic style with good storage and opened onto a small patio with a view of the pool. We found the room to be clean and comfortable apart from insufficient illumination from the overhead light fitting.

The service was a perfect mix of friendly informality and helpful efficiency. We had breakfast and dinner in the hotel restaurant throughout our stay and are still waxing lyrical about the excellence of the cuisine. It really deserves its reputation as the best restaurant in Tobago. The hotel is in the process of producing its own cookbook and I cannot wait to see a copy!

The hotel is well located just a 5 minute walk from the airport and about a 10 minute walk from Store Bay. Unfortunately, due to high waves during our stay, we were unable to swim in the sea so happily contented ourselves at the hotel pool instead.

In summary, we had a thoroughly relaxing stay at the Kariwak Village and are already planning a return visit!

For Tobago, I think Kariwak is the best its going to get, which is not saying much. Side note, for those coming to Tobago, its best to rent a car so you can get around.

Rooms - the beds are really really really bad. rock hard, like summer camp. I wished they had TV's, they really should update that. There is a communal TV for guests, but most of the time the workers are watching it (because its close to the kitchen). Its nice that they have wireless internet, but its not in the rooms, only in the dining area. But I guess thats all in keeping with the theme of the hotel.
Lighting in the rooms is also pretty horrible, very dim. The showers are very nice though, good water pressure and hot water.

Grounds - the grounds are nice, lots of plants and birds every where. The pool is not very impressive, very small and surrounded by a small area. There are two pools, both of which are very small. The hammocks are beautiful and great to relax in.

breakfast is very nice though, they stop serving it at 9:30am. i would recommend eating the breakfast every day. however, you have to tell them in advance when you are eating meals at the hotel, they run out of space apparently.

we ate dinner there two nights. wednesday night, was awful, we took more than 90 min to get 3 plates of food. but the next night dinner was much better (even though waitress was rude) food came much faster.

the service is interesting, people were either extremely rude or very nice. there were a few waitresses in particular, so rude with major attitudes. but i think that is tobago in general. if you are european or white american, you will most likely get treated better than anyone else visiting this hotel.

I am sitting in the Kariwak as I write this. Nice (if a little cheesy) music is playing, I am watching the humminbirds and other avian life fly past, while my wife and son play in the pool. It really is nice. The pool is purified but no chemicals, which is really great for those who don't like chlorine. Dinners are a little pricey at 130TT, but their food seems well made. Oh and skip the Iguana restaurant around the corner, the food is way overpriced, and not very good. Tobago overall is a bit funky (open sewers detract) but very laid back and nice folks. I guess the island isn't super developed, which has its good and bad points, but I like it. I would definitely come back...
