Seldom can any hotel have dropped its standards so quickly under new management than Arnos Vale. This was always a quirky, different hotel with its grandeur of the past still showing through and its beautiful tropical setting of gardens and Caribbean bay still a powerful attraction. What has changed between 2006 and 2007 seems to have been a ruthless drive to cut costs with little regard to the comfort and safety of their guests.
During our week in November a few of the problems that arose are worth telling.
One couple were robbed by someone armed with a knife who entered their room at night and stole money - while they were in the room. Another couple were troubled by an unwanted visitor who tried their door having first turned off the outside security light. After these happening new security staff were recruited but guests were all very unhappy nevertheless. Last year things were different, Albert looked after everyone at night and was ever present along with other security guards both night and day.
A few people tried the restaurant for dinner but seldom went back a second time. It was not so much that Marina the chef could not cook well, she can and is particularly good with fish, but it seems that she has to make do with lower cost ingredients to the point that most dishes became unappetising.
The breakfast selection that had been excellent last year was now stripped down. One or two types of fresh fruit rather than the five or six of last year, two types of tea rather than the dozen or so from before, one type of sweet pastry rather than several last year and all the juices now taste more of chemical than of the fruit they are supposed to have come from.
The pool bar was so sparsely staffed that on some days no-one appeared until about 2pm and on most days they ran out of some basic drinks. The pool itself looked like a health hazard and we only saw one person venture in the whole week. There were bits of debris and so many chemicals that you could not see the first step down into the pool far less the bottom. A new filter was installed and 6 days later the water started to clear but the bottom was still not visible!
The Arnos Vale website advertise the presence of an onsite scuba diving school, which last year provided excellent service. The school left in December 2006.
If it had not been for Marilyn, Monica, Kimoy and Ryan who kept smiling and doing their best to help us and the other guests the holiday would have been near to ruined. However, despite their willing nature and hard work even these stalwarts cannot make up for the ever growing failures in maintenance and the increasing layers of decay and grime. Last year many, including ourselves, could not wait to come back entranced by the place and the way it was run. This year no-one felt they would want to return. It no longer feels safe or clean. It is such as shame because with some investment Arnos Vale could still be a wonderful place to stay.
