“An oasis of natural beauty - go now!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2005

I had a fantastic week at Le Grande Almandier in Grande Riviere, which has to be one of the most beautiful unspoiled parts of the world. The hotel staff and locals are very friendly and helpful and the rooms are clean and comfortable. The restaurant and bar have a great atmosphere and look right out on to the beach, which is wonderfully clean and quiet.
I'd strongly advise staying more than one or two nights as there's actually much more to do in the area than just turtle watching - amazing as that experience is.
There are a number of treks to waterfalls, the hotel rents out kayaks which you can take in the sea or up the river, the swimming and surfing are good and it's a great base to explore the rainforest of Matelot, Shark River, the lighthouse and beach at Toco and various other local landmarks. Ask at the hotel for Nigel Spencer, a local guide who can usually be found around the beach, who will take you on rainforest treks and let you in on the secrets of the area (he also rents out bikes and can arrange boat and camping trips).
A tip: if you want air conditioning and room facing the beach, go for room 6, although room 8 on the corner is also nice with a dual aspect balcony. For evening "liming" (hanging out enjoying a drink with the locals) head into the main village and follow the music to where Roots and Branches rehearse most evenings or enjoy a game of pool at the local bar.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2005

Guest house with 10 rooms, nos. 6,7 and 8 directly overlooking the beach though shielded by trees, located across the road from Mon Plaisir Hotel. In fairly remote small village, few basic shops, with a magnificent beach and luxuriant vegetation, approx. 2.5 hours drive from the airport through some winding terrain. Birders can pick up a local guide at 5am and walk up Monte Video Trace into the hills to see and hear the rare Piping Guan or Pawi, though there are plenty other birds to see as well. At night from 6pm to 6 am the beach is closed, but armed with a permit and guide for 45TT dollars, you can see huge leatherbacks coming ashore to lay their eggs. Disturbance is kept to a minimum and no flash photography. At dawn the next morning we found 3 turtles still active surrounded by plentiful black vultures looking for eggs, so good photography is possible. There is some AC but not all rooms, and the rooms are functional and adequate. Food is good, and we enjoyed the freshly cooked breakfasts. Various activities can be arranged.
We were especially impressed by the smiling hospitality and helpful service from all staff at the guest house, and by many pleasant smiling villagers, many of whom were very welcoming towards us and delightful to chat to. Satellite TV exists if you have to maintain vague contact with the rest of civilisation.
