“Disappointed and Overpriced !”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2007

I've been going to Trinidad on business twice a year for the last 10 or so years,I thought i'd give the Hilton another go after staying in the Kapok for the last few times as the Kapok's rooms are in my opinion starting to get a bit shabby and i'd heard the Hilton's had been renovated ,mmmmmmmmmmmmm!
Check in was fine but when i got to my room i was very disappointed,it was one of the very old rooms and in my opinion for US$ 200 a night plus taxes just not good enough and an insult to the Hilton brand.I went back to reception and asked to be changed which i was immediately without fuss, however on getting to my second room i found it occupied so back i go to reception to try again !
My third room was one of the renovated rooms,it was a lovely room but strangely the actual bath/shower had not been changed and on using the shower found it was almost impossible to keep the temperature steady going from hot to cold, not good when half way through washing your hair,i couldn't be bothered to complain again so had baths instead of showers during my 3 night stay, inconvenient but i really didn't want a 4th room !.The rest of the room however was good with a fantastic king size bed which which very comfortable.
The rest of my stay was ok,the pool and pool area is nice although getting very tatty, the staff were friendly enough and the service was good although the food was ridiculously overpriced with a full breakfast over US$ 30 after tax.
To sum up to be honest i was disappointed and probably will not stay there again as the new 400 room Hyatt will be open next time i visit, the Hilton really could, and should do better.Would i recommend this hotel, only if you can affiord to pay extra for the "new" rooms otherwise avoid !

I stayed at this hotel in Dec 06, that was the time when the renovations were on. Though had little trouble with the noise during the reworks, but overall the stay was comfortable.

The pool is decent and the terrace restaurant is at a good location.

The room has a old look ..so a little improvement wud make this hotel a rating of 5. I even visited after the renovation, and it seems they made quite a few improvements...the lobby has changed and looks cool now..Good place to stay!

I first visited the Trinidad Hilton - the 'upside down' Hilton - 30 years ago; and it was wonderful! So, when I knew I was going to be visiting with my husband, I was disappointed to read the bad reviews. They were all wrong!
IT IS STILL FANTASTIC!
The room - we had an unrenovated one - was very well-appointed, beautifully clean, had a well-stocked drinks bar, an immaculate bathroom, and a balcony which had a lovely view of the surrounding hills, and the sea.
The food in the main restaurant at the 3-times-a-day buffet would rival anything anywhere in the world. Dinner was only $26, and caters for the calorie-counter as well as the gourmet!
The Carnival Bar has a wonderful overview of downtown Port of Spain. You have to try the 'Trinidad Swizzle'.
There's a lovely pool area, with its own outside bar. And, of course, extensive conference facilities.
But, most of all, the staff are WONDERFUL. They attend to your every request, ask questions about how you are doing (none of this 'how are you/have a nice day' but I don't really care business!). They spend time really listening interactively to you, and respond with humor and genuine interest!
I went on 2 tours - all arranged by the hotel. There's also a hotel taxi service - with pre-determined prices - 24 hours a day.
But don't take my word for it - TRY IT FOR YOURSELF. My husband and I agreed that every hotel we visit in future will be judged against this standard of excellence!

I only stayed one night at the POS Hilton and found it to be just ok. I had heard some good things about the place so booked into the hotel for the first night of my honeymoon. Check-in was good, the front desk clerk was friendly. The directions to the room were alittle confusing, having to go outside then down some walkway (not air conditioned) then down the elevator to our room. Coming back to check out was a little more uncomfortable as the walkway was not air conditioned and was hot, made worse by having to lug our bags.
The room was pretty basic, the bed not overly comfortable. The view from our balcony was nothing special.
Overall the POS Hilton was just ok. I thought it was pretty expensive for what you got but most hotels in Trinidad are.

After checking in, you take an elevator DOWN to your room. This place is built a hill in which the top floor is the lobby. Rooms are okay, just make sure you don't leave the hotel grounds by yourself. Port of Spain is wild and can be a danagerous place.

We visited Port of Spain in March 2007 and found it to be the best hotel in Port of Spain. When we arrived at the hotel, Duncan the bellhop immediately took our luggage and waited for us to check in. The lobby is quite impressive (after the renovation). Marble floors, a breakfast bar that sells espresso drinks and pastries, free wine and cheese tastings in the evening, another bar that sells alcoholic beverages until 6 am, plus wireless internet.

We had a renovated room on the executive floor. The room was perfect. New, modern, clean, with all the usual Hilton amenities. The bed was really comfortable. If you go to the Hilton Trinidad website, they have pictures of the renovated rooms on the site now. The lounge on the executive floor was great, and the bartender was really nice. It does pay to upgrade to the executive floor, as all the appetizers and drinks in the executive lounge are free.

The pool was perfect, and we spent many afternoons there relaxing, and enjoying the sun.

All in all the hotel was typical Hilton, clean, classy, and catering to the customer. We were treated very well and enjoyed our stay very much. The views from the various balconies are really worth the price. You get what you pay for, and after speaking with other travellers in Port of Spain, the Hilton is definitely THE place to stay.

Check in time is a joke but I'm guessing that this is the same all around Trinidad. The check in desk reminded me of the airline attendent on 'Meet the Fockers'. In this day in age doesn't the HHoners ID have all your information. What the heck are they typing???

The rooms were musty and not worth the price. I'm going to try one of the other new hotels next time but I'm guessing that this is the best you get in Trinidad.
