My husband and I had the horrible displeasure of staying in this dump for one night after leaving Tobago and before departing from Trinidad. We have travelled all over the world and stayed in all manner of accomodations in all kinds of situations and never have we been so repulsed. It is unbelievable that anyone could ever find this place acceptable to house human beings. This place makes Canadian prisons seem like the Four Seasons.
Where can I begin with the list of atrocities at this hotel... (by the way, everything everyone else has said is true and then some!)... there was human body hair left in the bathtub, all of the light fixtures were bare bulbs, there was a stinky drain in the middle of the bathroom floor, the floor boards in the rest of the room felt like they would cave in with every step (my husband and I weigh 150 and 120 lbs. repectively, which I don't think should be too heavy for a floor!), the mattress was too large for the box spring (or whatever it was) so we had to snuggle close to the middle in the amazing heat and humidity (the a/c was non-existent) so that we didn't fall off of the bed on to the 1940s carpet, and on and on. After we had already booked and paid (the worst $130 I have ever spent), I read in our guidebook that the Bel Air was built in the 1940s. It must be true - nothing has been updated since. I thought that they could put their lamps on ebay and make a fortune selling them to collectors of vintage home decor.
In short, do not be deceived by the on-line photos as we were. They are totally false. My husband and I took video of the hotel room because we didn't think that people would really believe us, but we took no photos. We're going to see if we can extract some stills to post on this site because people really need to know. As others have said, the only reasonable thing to do to this place is to tear it down. I would not wish that the person I dislike most to have to spend five minutes here.
