“Overpriced Motel”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2009

We were shown to a musty ground floor room with nothing beyond a bed, some chipped old furniture and an air con unit. On complaint we were moved to an upstairs room (insist!) which at least had a door and a balcony and a couple of prints on the wall. On further complaint we managed to get a bedside lamp! The restaurant served overcooked food.

It's a shame because the location is terrific. But this is NOT *** accommodation - it's a low ** and I would not recommend this without a warning that you are booking very basic, tired accommodation. We checked out early and returned to Port of Spain.

Most of the time this place was deserted. For a hotel it has no pool or basic amenities in the room like TV, sink or kitchenette. It has a cold feeling to it and the the usual musty smell from being vacant for so long. On the second of two nights I awoke when bat droppings from the gap in the ceiling fell on my face and the bed. See photo. Only when I threatened to sue the Hotel did the girl on reception call the manager in Port of Spain who only offered one hundred dollars TT discount. I told him what he could do with that, paid for one night and vowed never to darken their doors again. I still return to Maracas Bay but day trips only.

Bad bits first, tried to book online via their website but they did not answer so phoned. Website indicates that the bar closes at 9pm but in fact it is more like 8pm having said that the hotel was quite the first night and it seems that most Trini's bring their own drink and party on the beach till midnight - 1am.
Good points room really clean and good value for money, we had a room with sat tv. great power shower, was very clean and had a fridge for TT$695 a night about US$116 and that included a full breakfast served from 7:30am till 11am.
Dinner for 2 was approx US$100 but was good. The staff are the best bit of this hotel really friendly and helpful. The best coffee in Trinidad is served here. And just sitting on the balcony looking at the beach in the evening with a drink is just the most relaxing place on the Island. Stay here, don't expect a five star hotel, it's not but it also does not pretend to be, don't expect great service after 8pm, you won't get it just relax and be a Trini for a day or so and you will love it. ps and if you smile and friendly with people you will most probably be invited to a beach party

We recently came back from a 12 day trip to Trinidad. Arrived at Trinidad at around 8 - we were worried because reviews on this site had said that the hotel closed early. Despite this, we caught a cab and headed to Maracas Bay (cost: $55) and got to the hotel at around 9. Needless to say, the hotel was dark when we got there, but as soon as the taxi pulled up at the gate, a man came out and opened the gate for us (Note: the gate is never locked). He gave us our room keys and we checked in the next day. No problem.
Chose Maracas Bay Hotel because of the price, $70 a night is really nice especially for college students like us. Must say though, had reservations before the trip because of past reviews saying there were bats in the walls and whatnot - the bat problem, as it turns out, is FALSE. After some investigating, we concluded that the chirping sounds were actually birds that nest in the space between the ceiling and the wall. Overall, was a great trip because the beach was literally right in front of us. The beach was great. The shark and bake was fantastic.
Our room had two queen-sized beds, a dresser, and a bathroom. No fridge, but what do you expect with 70 bucks right? We got a room on the second floor, which I think was nicer bc the ceilings were vaulted + the view. The hotel staff were not very helpful in terms of tourist hotspots - we basically had to figure things out ourselves. To future Maracas Bay travelers: taxi vans (called "Maxi's" there) run from Maracas Bay to Port of Spain many times a day and cost only 9 TT per person (approximately $1.50). You can flag them down (easily recognizable: white vans with yellow/red/no stripes) at any part of the main road. Important note: vans in Port of Spain that go to Maracas Bay are at GEORGE STREET until probably 8 PM.
The hotel food was not cheap. Our first dinner was about $45 - that was our last dinner at the hotel. Lucky for us though, we made a discovery our second night: Arnold's, a bar just up the road from the hotel (literally like a minutes walk). Found out that they not only serve drinks but also serve food (probably the only place that does so late at night) - usually shark and fries. We asked the lady cooking, Sharon (GREAT PERSON, PHENOMENAL FOOD), if she served dinners and twenty minutes later we both had full, delicious meals that only cost approximately $5 each. From then on, Sharon prepared separate delicious dinners for us. Seriously, best food I've ever had. An example of a Sharon dinner: Creole dish - cole slaw, salad, plantains, rice, beans, and creole chicken - DELICIOUS. And only FIVE BUCKS are you serious? You can probably tell how excited I am just by reading this.
Anyways, final evaluation of the Maracas Bay Hotel: decent. The whole point of our trip was to chill at the beach, and the hotel was perfect for this. The room furnishings are modest, but clean. Air conditioning works great.

  • Disliked — Far away from Port of Spain

After reading some of the online reviews for the Maracas Bay Hotel, I started to regret reserving a room at the hotel as a one-night beach getaway prior to a business meeting in Port of Spain. But it actually wasn't so bad, as long as you have modest expectations and don't plan to stay for an extended period of time. The furnishings are spartan, but reasonably cheerful, and my room was well-lit. The room was fairly clean, though the sheets seemed a bit too well-worn. The air conditioning unit worked really well. I would definitely recommend getting a room on the second floor, as the view of the ocean is better, and the rooms have vaulted ceilings. The hotel did seem to shut down early (around 8pm, even on a Saturday night), and I would not recommend arriving after this point unless you've specifically made arrangements with someone at the hotel to greet you. The drive to Maracas Bay seems treacherous enough during the day, and I wouldn't attempt it at night. The restaurant, while not particularly cheap, served fresh food simply prepared. With a little more effort, this could be a really nice place to stay.

I stayed at Maracas Bay Hotel for four nights The place was recommended to me by to Trinis on my plane from London. I was looking for a beautiful spot and a few calm days. I could have had a room with TV, but who wants it when you're supposed to relax? Never regretted it. What I got was beautiful Africans, good food, a nice bar and wonderful swims in the ocean. A few days later I was booked for the Hilton at Barbados and it was just an ordinary hotel for spoilt tourists who never really experience the culture.

Mine was a great lime party, bake'n'shark, local food, and lots of nice smiles and good service. And a jewel of a taxi driver who made detours to show me the island on my way back to the airport. An experience is what you make out of it.

  • Liked — Location, far away from fellow Europeans
  • Disliked — Too few tourists, low season

I stayed there for Carnival 2006 and was disappointed. It was not worth the price. The room had a musty smell and was a bit run down and there was no television or refrigerator in it. For some reason we did not have restful sleep there.
