“Don't expect too much.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2014

If you have spare time go and see this place but don't expect so much especially if you come here during summer. Most lake are drying from sun's heat and the scene is a long stretch of black asphalt in the middle (about 100 acres circumference) surrounded with fruit trees and bushes. Wear comfortable shoes/sandal with higher elevation as you walk in soft asphalt and long distance. imagine this place is about 110 acres radius so walking around the area takes time and requires endurance. We actually walk straight in the middle and soaked our feet on small potholes with hot water inside and watch worker digging asphalt for processing. If you suffer from respiratory disease then this place isn't for you because of strong sulfuric smell all around. Don't worry there are locals at the entrance to assist and serves as a guide when you get here. BTW you cannot get inside Lake Pitch without a guide but the price is reasonable and includes entrance to nearby museum. Price varies depending on tour company or taxi you hire from POS. I suggest hiring a taxi at POS and negotiate because it's cheaper than going to a tour company. Plus you can always re-negotiate with the taxi driver to stop at Hanuman Temple en route back to POS. So there you have it, enjoy.

“You just HAVE to come here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2014

Its a really odd place - but you must come here. Make sure you use an official guide - they are cheaper than the unofficial guides and give you the whole tour which is extremely interesting. Our guide had worked there for 28 years so he was able to answer any questions. We got to see the lake being worked and also the huge numbers of ospreys and vultures. Sadly the museum was closed for refurbishment.

“Very cool!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2014

Sure, you can read about it in the books but it doesn't compare to experiencing it firsthand!

If you are a DIY traveller, catch the taxi to Sando (San Fernando - 45 to 60 minutes depending on how crazy your driver is) from POS at Independance Square South on the street next to the KFC and the bank; cost is TT15pp. Once in Sando get a maxi to La Brea (about 45min drive) (you will be dropped in Sando next to stands selling snacks and drinks and they are happy to help if you look lost, but maxis leave from right there) for TT7pp. There is nothing at the site, though, so if you want to get drinks or food it's best to get them in Sando - we had some lovely doubles on the corner where the taxis left back to POS.

Entrance to the site was TT30pp - recommended guides are Galvin and Wayne (we were with Betty and she wasn't very enthusiastic and was rather scripted) but no matter who you are with it is so cool walking on the slightly spongy ground and watching the sulfur bubbles on the surface. We didn't have time to soak in the pools, but there wasn't too much water in them anyway so we didn't feel cheated at all.

Overall it was a long trip to get there and back but well worth it!

“make sure you get an official guide”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2014

Coming from Ireland I appreciate the natural history that goes into something like the pitch lake. It is a fascinating story, well worth the entrance fee. The LA brea area is a high crime zone so lock the car and only use an official guide. Bring old shoes etc
