“A quick tour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

This tour was quick, cheap, easy to get to, and the guide was knowledgeable and friendly. We combined the trip with a couple of other stops and had a fun day. Very interesting. Definitely go into the center to secure a guide.. We felt very safe and thought the roads were awesome.

“Something unique”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

It is something I have never seen or heard of before, but however, once you see it, that's about it. Nothing really special about it. Some people will go bathe in it thinking it's good for their skin. I'm not so sure about that, with the strong 'petrol' fumes even from very far away. Worth seeing if you are passing through the area.

“Lake visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

Very interesting place to visit. Be aware of the cost of a guide, $30TT, and not the $600, yes, six hundred, my wife and I were charged by a chap called Carl, who told us he was an official guide and that that was the cost. A right rip-off for a 45 minute tour. BEWARE!!

“Worth a visit if you're in the area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2013

The pitch lake is an interesting experience, and the official guides are inexpensive and friendly. It is unlike anything else I've ever seen, and affects the roads and local houses, pulling everything towards it. However, it is a little underwhelming as an attraction and so it is worth combining with a visit to something else in the area.

“One visit is enough”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2013

Approaching Pitch Lake, the road gets very bumpy and uneven as the shifting soil makes it next to impossible for the Ministry of Works to keep the road level. Drive with caution getting there. The gated building is where official tour guides can be found. The shack(s) outside the parking lot host unofficial tour guides that might be abit cheaper. Recommend the official tour guides though. Bathrooms are available on site. The lake itself looks like an asphalt parking lot from the distance. Once you're on it, it's definitely something unique. The guide will take you across the lake and show you soft spots and demonstrate the elasticity of the surface. Interesting, but one visit is enough. Try to avoid visiting during the rainy season as downpours lead to rivers of water flowing down the hills into the lake and onto the walkways. If you go then, be sure to wear shoes/sandals you don't mind getting soaked or stained black.
