We spent last New Year's at the Friendship Bay Beach Resort and are planning to return again this winter. For us, a couple of burnt out strung out New Yorkers, it was our favorite island vacation ever. We tend to stay in 5 star deluxe hotels when we travel for business (Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton calibre) but on holiday we want to kick back and get away from it all, and we feel blessed to have discovered Friendship Bay. Very simple, unpretentious, on one of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean. We booked late so we had a small room in the main building, but the view was spectacular, the room was clean, and we didn't miss not having air conditioning. When we return, I'd like to stay in one of the water front cottages with private sun patio. Food was very good to excellent, a real feat in that part of the Caribbean where you do not find jumbo jets unloading imported food cargo on a daily basis. Bequia is a pain to get to, but so worthwhile once you finally get there. We found the staff and owners at Friendship Bay to be very friendly and professional. We've recommended the hotel to a few select friends. It's not for everyone, and it's not for anyone who can't live without their plasma tv, highspeed internet access or super strong 20 minute shower. For us it was perfect; its lack of these amenities made it the kind of place where we knew we could avoid other high stress New Yorkers, and just chill on the beach.
