Palm Island

We went to Palm Island in late April to celebrate my Birthday and found it to be exactly as we had envisaged. The ambience of Palm Island is very relaxing and the vista is breathtakingly beautiful.

We found all the staff to be welcoming and friendly... nothing was too much trouble and soon felt very much at home and relaxed. We had a beachfront room which was lovely but would also recommend the Southern Cross House... perfect for 2 couples. It is perched on a cliff top and has been completely refurbished to a high standard.. enjoying glorious sea views and all mod cons. Both bedrooms are en suite and the living space was just luxurious. You also enjoy the "all inclusive" benefits, plus a courtesy golf cart and your very own splash pool. Meals can apparently be ordered and delivered if you wish to spend a quiet evening "in". The price for two couples is the same as booking 2 beachfront rooms and we were very impressed with all the extra facilities offered here.

We spent 2 weeks in Palm Island but really would suggest 10 days as an optimum time. We enjoyed the swimming and snorkelling... the Hobby Cats were fun and the tennis, bikes etc. really were "all included.

The temperature was very hot and rather humid... but we were advised that November to January is cooler and less humid.

Dinner on the beach on my birthday was a truly "Shirley Valentine" moment. Better still, the hotel does not charge extra for this service, you just book in advance at Reception.. though we did tip the staff for all their extra work!

We went across to Union Island and enjoyed that.. there are several waterfront bars and restaraunts and another hotel. I also enjoyed the little shops. Dio not rely on the boat for Union Island leaving on time... but if you miss it just ask at reception and they will send the boat back!!

There were some "no See Ums"... sand flies which appeared after the rain... though of course you could not see them!! They definitely preferred the ladies .. so go prepared .. but it was not a major hazard.

On the hottest of days, the swimming pool was refreshingly cool, and there was always a gentle breeze there when it was too hot on the beach. The pool is lovely and only 4' deep, which was comforting after a glass of something nice at lunchtime!

The place is for couples of all ages and other guests were very friendly but never intrusive. Hi to Fiona and Allen from bonny Scotland and to Sophie and James, whom we ejoyed meeting.

This hotel was exceptional for "little touches"...fridges full of cold drinks by the pool, in the computer/t.v. room... we particularly liked the "Bed Time Thoughts from Palm Island", which appeared every evening when the beds were turned down by the wonderful staff.

The only 2 residents on the Island are "the Doc" and his wife. He is also an artist and his painitings are very striking. He is very helpful too and if you do need any "on the spot" treatment he is a very reassuring prescence!

All in all it was a truly relaxing and "different" holiday.

We arrived home from Palm Island three weeks ago after a two week stay and truly miss this beautiful island. We had hoped Palm Island would allow us to completely unwind and escape from the rigors and stresses of life and it did exactly that, and more! I hope our review does the resort the justice it deserves and will convince anybody not 100% sure of visiting Palm that it is the place to go!

The Island
The word “rustic” is often used to describe Palm and this is certainly true. Apart from the resort and some private villas scattered around the island, it is pretty much left as an untouched Caribbean island. Amongst the thousands of palms, long grasses and bushes are lizards and iguanas. Taking a walk up on any of the three peaks on Palm provides great views over-looking the island with other Grenadine islands in the distance. Palm has many beaches. Most are not suitable for swimming or snorkelling as the sea is rather rough but they are still very beautiful. The main stretch of beach is in front of the resort which boasts brilliant white sand and turquoise sea. This is where most people spend their day although even when the hotel is full, the beach does not appear crowded and there are sun beds a plenty. We found snorkelling particularly good between the two jetties or on the reef in front of the sea view rooms. We saw some very beautiful fish and in great numbers too.

The Room
We stayed in Palm View room No. 32. Before arriving at palm I contacted the resort to request this room as it was away from the kitchen area and because it had a partial sea view. They cannot guarantee room requests so we were delighted when we were escorted to our requested room. The room was clean and very spacious. It included a very comfortable king-sized bed, a double bath and large shower. There is a large double wardrobe (including a mass of wooden hangers) and a set of double drawers so plenty of storage space. An iron and ironing board are supplied as too is a room safe. On other reports there are complaints of lack of air conditioning. There really is no need for this as once the shutters are open, a steady breeze flows through the room not only keeping you cool but allowing you to hear the relaxing sounds of the birds and the palms swaying. Please do not expect a 5* standard of room. As with all of the other resorts we have visited in the Caribbean, they do appear to be a little dated and could do with some modernisation. This I feel applies to Palm and could be done tastefully and without losing its appealing charm.

Food/Dining
We would consider the food on Palm “good”, nothing more, nothing less. There are two restaurants. The Royal Palm serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and The Sunset bar which serves just lunch and dinner. Breakfast and lunch at The Royal Palm is always the same each day. The Sunset bar has one menu which does not change be it lunch or dinner time. The repetitiveness and lack of choice does start to become a slight annoyance, however we always looked forward to the evening meals at The Royal Palm. The menu changed daily and had good variety. The meals were well presented and were of a high standard.
The highlight of the evenings however was sat around the bar. Not only were the staff fantastic at their jobs and would concoct the most amazing drinks and cocktails but there was a relaxed atmosphere amongst the guests, most guests happy to talk to one another and make new friends.

Staff
Palm’s biggest asset is not the island or resort but is it's staff. From grounds keepers right up to management, all staff were extremely friendly, helpful, polite and courteous. They all appeared genuine too and were not just trying to earn a tip at the end of our stay. They were best we have ever encountered on our travels and it was a pleasure meeting them all.

Whilst visiting Palm you must visit some of the surrounding islands. We would thoroughly recommend booking the private charter on Captain Yannis. Having the whole day to ourselves on the catamaran meant we visited Canouan, Mayreau, Tobago Cays (swimming with the turtles was an amazing experience), Petit St Vincent and Mopion. The beauty of the Grenadines needs to be seen to be believed!

We could go on and on about our great experience on Palm Island, it has left such a mark on us. We would just like to say a big thank you to every single member of staff but especially to Kimroy, Jonny, Jarret, Garvin, Karden and Anthony at the bar, and to Theo, who made our last meal on the island underneath the heart-shaped tree truly memorable. Also to Del and Sue (hope you enjoyed your curry!), David and Pippa and Di and Val (if you are reading this and not jetting away somewhere else!), it was a pleasure meeting you all and we hope you all are well.

Just returned from a gorgeous 2 week honeymoon in Palm Island. We chose this island to get married based on the reviews on this website and it didn't fail to impress. The whole place is idillic and is the perfect place to get away from it all. The food was fantastic - I am a vegetarian yet I felt there was always a variety and my husband particularly loved the fish dishes. The banana pancakes and eggs benedict are a 'must have' and were our favourites for breakfast!

We got married on the quieter side of the island and couldn't have asked for anything more. We had to visit St. Vincent to inititate the the legal aspect of the marriage and that gave us the opportunity to spend time sight seeing there. It was interesting to see another part of the carribean.
Special thanks to Azuba and Antoinette for making our day perfect! The whole day was so relaxing and stressfree. Being able to hear waves of the sea during the ceremony and the steel pan soloist made it even more special. I would definately recommend Palm Island to anyone considering getting married there.

A visit to the Tobago Cays is a must - swimming with turtles is an unforgettable experience. The sea is also so crystal blue!

In response to previous reviews about the AC - we personally didn't find this an issue. We were in one of the beachfront rooms (number 17) and the sea breeze kept us cool. I didn't have one night where I felt too hot to sleep. The only thing to note was the sound of the waves crashing on the shore was quite loud and therefore I would recommend taking earplugs if you are a light sleeper!

If you are feeling energetic both the Iguana trail and look out point give great views of the island and created an enjoyable early evening walk for us both.

Overall we had a fantastic and memorable honeymoon/wedding at palm island and would recommend this for a relaxing, sun drenched holiday. If you are looking to dance the night away and have an action packed break then this isn't the place for you!!

Palm Island sets a new standard for my wife & I for future travel plans and will be hard to beat....for us it was paradise and we loved every minute of our experiences there.

From the moment you step off the plane in Barbados where resort reps meet you to whisk you away to your connecting flight, to stepping off your boat from Union Island and being greeted on the dock with a handshake and friendly smiles from management personnel and 'KimRoy' with tall glasses of rum punch; you just know this is going to be a vacation to remember and all the traveling was well worth it. From then on resort staff went out of their way to be friendly, courteous, gracious and attentive to your every need. Safety was never an issue and the island and surrounding waters are just beautiful!.....

Yes, there is no AC..well, they have it, but it just does not work to keep the room cold..there is no glass in the windows. This was not a problem for us. We never use AC because we have paid to feel the heat : ) We used the shutters to catch the breeze and after a few hours of getting climatized it is fine. With no AC and all the screens you wake up to the sound of waves, birds and palm trees swaying.

...speaking of waking, unlike at home my wife struggled to stay in bed past 0530am and couldn't wait to get up & out of the room by 0600am sitting in her space with coffee in hand watching the sun dancing off the water and being greeted by "Good and Morning"..2 small colorful birds that would come each & every morning to start our day (there are LOTS of birds here..and I mean LOTS!!)....coffee was normally followed by a couple of cold beers from the mini bar..on this trip I coined the phrase "hurry up and finish your beer; we have to get to breakfast"..what can I say ..its just that kind of place.

Meals were all a la carte and food was delicous as were the drinks which were premium brand. Sitting on the beach was the best; the white sands, differing shades of blue waters, mysterious nearby islands, laughing seagulls and a floating boat show kept one as busy as one would want to be (bring Binoculars)....walking or biking the island everday was about as rough as it got..lots of scenery and privacy..night time enterainment was ideal for us; low key...a couple of singers over a few hours around the bar area- the best entertaiment however was at sunset when my wife and I would sit at the very end of the dock with feet dangling watching the red skys over nearby Union Island with rum punch in hand and then later after our meal and a couple of drinks we would again return here after dark and in the glow of the overhead lights watch schools of fish and eagle rays gracefully weaving their way through the water, joined later by a Manta ray and on one occasion a nurse shark ...

Our 7th wedding anniversary was a romantic table for two at the heart tree on the beach, candles, Chilean wine, delicious food and our very own waiters who were unintrusive but there to serve as needed.

Apparently there was a wedding at the resort while we were there but unlike other resorts we saw no evidence of this in way of preparations etc which led us to believe it was by choice a Palm Island style wedding..a very private affair...

Should you decide to travel to Palm Island..set your watch to Caribbean time and appreciate the pace of every day...if this sounds interesting you will absolutely love it! The World is a big place and we try to visit different places a couple of times a year, BUT we will be going back to Palm Island in the near future when life gets too busy and we want to go back to our private island. Perfection.

My girlfriend and I visited Palm Island this past March and had a really wonderful time. The island itself is very pretty with about five beaches but one that is exceptionally nice. we thought the food was very good along with the drinks. Expect a very laid back staff but friendly. Sometimes there is a communication breakdown but nothing you can't get around. If you are looking for a vacation that consists of eating, drinking, and beach related activities, then this is the place for you. It is a pretty cool experience and if you go you will know what I mean. I do definitely recommend Palm Island for a relaxed vacation. On a final note, if you like to get to know other people, this resort is a good place to do it. You meet people at the bar prior to dinner and then sometimes end up dining with them. We met about four couples that were really nice and fun to hang with; a real fun experience.
