This was our second trip to Nevis. Nevis is a beautiful, serene island. BUT Nevis is not particularly easy to get to. You must fly thru San Juan and then take a prop plane to the island... so when you arrive, you really are tired, overheated and uncomfortable. On our first nite the air conditioning was not working. There is a large fan over the bed so the nite was quite bearable...with a trade wind blowing. The much vaunted chef, Jason, arrived after we did that night, so our first meal...very expensive... was a great disappointment. Service, with exception of Tim, not so great. We quite frankly never gave the restaurant a second chance. There are too many other great places to eat on the island. Not a good way to start a vacation. But it did get better. The room was a premier with a very comfortable king size bed. The screened-in porch was a delight and the view, especially of the sunset, was glorious. Bathroom is gigantic with two sinks...towels new, crispy clean and plentiful. We had a small fridge in room. Ants only a problem if you drop food/drink on the floor. The housekeeping was wonderful. We had a delightful maid who was sweet, cheerful and welcoming. She was a wealth of information on the island and made us feel so welcome. This is not always the case on Nevis. Many young women are very reserved and can be borderline rude. It may be the culture. They may not like Americans. We tried to be as courteous as we could and friendly...but it can be a little off putting.
Places to eat. Gallipot is my absolute fav. Try the chicken korma. Sunshine's ribs were good...but it's a beach place...appeals to a younger crowd . Coconut's was wonderful as well...like being in a giant beach hut. Food and ambience exquisite.Nesbit Plantation for lunch with a great steel band. The food on Nevis, is by and large, what you might expect in a good gourmet restaurant with prices to match. There are not too many places that are inexpensive.
Oualie Beach and Nevis as a whole, attracts a quiet, and well traveled crowd..at least that was our experience. The beach at Oualie is not the most beautiful, but adequate.(Pinney Beach is the stunner) Plenty of comfortable beach chairs. Watch out for the red ants...at least I THINK that's what they were. Keep your shoes on and your feet on the beach chair. I am still itching from their nasty, painful bites.
Nevis is not an island for boozing & carousing. It is very environmentally conscious, drug free, quiet and serene. It's a place for snorkling, catching up on your reading and relaxing. If you want a carnival atmosphere, Nevis is not for you.
