After 5 relaxing nights on Nevis, it was almost a culture shock to stay at the Marriott. Our stay got off to a bad start, when our room was not ready upon our arrival. We were eventually give our keys, and went to the room, with Chris the bellman (VERY nice fellow). The room was a suite, even though we had only booked a "deluxe room with a balcony." We figured here must have been an issue with our original room, and we had been upgraded so we didn't have to continue to stand around the lobby. We unpacked, and got on our swimsuits to take a walk on the beach. And then another couple showed up to move into the room! They left, I called the front desk, and after about 20 minutes of waiting for the "I'll call you back in 5 minutes" from the front desk, we were told we had to pack up and move out of this room. They offered us a suite in the main building, so we did as requested, moved our stuff, and went to the new room. We started to unpack, and then became aware of a very strange odor in the room. It was listed as a non-smoking room, but it seemed that there had been some sort of spray used to mask a smell. After about 10 minutes, my wife's asthma kicked in, and she got very pale and short of breath. So back to the front desk for futher discussions. Eventually, Jason was able to get us into a nice room with no toxic chemicals in the air, and we unpacked for the third time. Now it was 6:45 pm, so no walk on the beach.
Once we settled in, the property was nice, but HUGE! We half expected the Disney characters to be parading through the main courtyard.
Pros: clean and spacious accomodations
Good water pressure, toiletries.
Several pools with lots of lounge chairs.
Good bakery in Calypso Restaurant to take back to room for breakfast.
Easy towel exchange.
Air conditioning worked well.
Reasonably comfortable beds. Not great, but ok if you found the correct zone in the bed.
Excellent housekeeping. Very clean
Cons: check in process and confusion and inconvenience
Tap water had very strong chlorine taste. Even the employees in the shops at the hotel said they drink bottled water because of the taste of the water. Restaurants on St Kitts didn't have this problem.
Sitting by the pool was disrupted by LOUD music for aerobics classes in the pool.
It can be a long walk from your room to the entrance of the hotel.
Limited parking for guests with rental cars. Sometimes no spaces are available.
Some incorrect information upon check out, which necessitated a phone call to a front desk employee at her home to clarify.
If we return to St Kitts, we'd probably look at other options. Nothing unique about it; just a big, big resort.
