After 5 relaxing nights on Nevis, it was almost a culture shock to stay at the Marriott. Our stay got off to a bad start, when our room was not ready upon our arrival. We were eventually give our keys, and went to the room, with Chris the bellman (VERY nice fellow). The room was a suite, even though we had only booked a "deluxe room with a balcony." We figured here must have been an issue with our original room, and we had been upgraded so we didn't have to continue to stand around the lobby. We unpacked, and got on our swimsuits to take a walk on the beach. And then another couple showed up to move into the room! They left, I called the front desk, and after about 20 minutes of waiting for the "I'll call you back in 5 minutes" from the front desk, we were told we had to pack up and move out of this room. They offered us a suite in the main building, so we did as requested, moved our stuff, and went to the new room. We started to unpack, and then became aware of a very strange odor in the room. It was listed as a non-smoking room, but it seemed that there had been some sort of spray used to mask a smell. After about 10 minutes, my wife's asthma kicked in, and she got very pale and short of breath. So back to the front desk for futher discussions. Eventually, Jason was able to get us into a nice room with no toxic chemicals in the air, and we unpacked for the third time. Now it was 6:45 pm, so no walk on the beach.

Once we settled in, the property was nice, but HUGE! We half expected the Disney characters to be parading through the main courtyard.

Pros: clean and spacious accomodations
Good water pressure, toiletries.
Several pools with lots of lounge chairs.
Good bakery in Calypso Restaurant to take back to room for breakfast.
Easy towel exchange.
Air conditioning worked well.
Reasonably comfortable beds. Not great, but ok if you found the correct zone in the bed.
Excellent housekeeping. Very clean

Cons: check in process and confusion and inconvenience
Tap water had very strong chlorine taste. Even the employees in the shops at the hotel said they drink bottled water because of the taste of the water. Restaurants on St Kitts didn't have this problem.
Sitting by the pool was disrupted by LOUD music for aerobics classes in the pool.
It can be a long walk from your room to the entrance of the hotel.
Limited parking for guests with rental cars. Sometimes no spaces are available.
Some incorrect information upon check out, which necessitated a phone call to a front desk employee at her home to clarify.

If we return to St Kitts, we'd probably look at other options. Nothing unique about it; just a big, big resort.

just came back with a group of 24 people.there was come confusion at sign in.some people paid for upgrades but did not get them. the resort is very nice. remember you are on a small island. service is slow . thats they way it is here. you are on holidays take a downer. extend a smile or a handshake to the locals. once they got to know us at the resort service got much better. we rented scooters to tour the island. it was great. some scooters were old ours was brand new. in the small towns people waved to us. they seemed sincere. we will be going back again. you will have a great time if you chill out a little and smile.
relax and enjoy. remember how lucky you are to be there.

We went to St. Kitts with a group of approx 60 people from ING in Canada - we read the reviews and were a little apprehensive -but the trip was on...away we went.
Upon arriving - we were greeted with smiles and respect - the front desk helped us to switch our room as the original unit had a smell and did not have a great view -we were polite and respectful and they were extremely accomodating.
We ate breakfast in the calypso - a buffet - it was fine
Lunch down by the ocean was great - especially the ribs...
Dinner at Blu and the Italian restaurant were great - especially the ossa buco - it would melt in your mouth.
the only way i would suggest visiting is all inclusive - if you enjoy having a drink or 4....
the golf course is a fabulous but difficult resort course - sometimes a little slow - but worth playing at least once - especially after 2:30 when the cost is approx 50/us.
The inhabitants in town were very polite - and told us to visit Jimmy's a local bar across from Ballyhoo Restaurant - it was a great place for guys to relax while the ladies went shopping.
If you go - tell Iticia - the guys who wanted one beer and 5 glasses sent you...she will probably remember us.
we took the catamaran to Nevis - it was great especially the snorkelling - the beach with the monkey on Nevis was a bit of a jerk - but the other guy who showed up was great and we spent over 80US for trinkets...it was fun to barter.
If you are not pushy or disrespectful - this is the most polite and respectful island we have visited - we will return.

Very nice property. Rooms were also very nice and kept very clean. The food was average to above average. The pool was nice, not crowded. Unfortunatly the hot tub is a warm tub. Awesome beach, lots of huts, chairs etc. Locals on the beach were not a big problem. No worse than most Islands. The service was average for a Carribean Island. Not up to N. American standards, but that is to be expected. The All-inclusive is a great value.(otherwise, meals are expensive). The golf course was very good and the Pro shop prices were quite reasonable.

Overall, i would go back in a heartbeat. Anyone complaining about the service does not spend enough time in the Islands. It was typical.

“The review were right! NEVER AGAIN!”

Marriott St. Kitts Royal Resort

I read all of the reviews here and so many of them talked about ALL of the problems that people had there, and they were right. We went down there using reward points along with an upgrade fee. I called ahead THREE TIMES to confirm that we would have an ocean front suite with a king bed only to get there to find out that they didnt have any available and wouldnt. It took several hours of going back and forth with the front desk and management that they finally managed to come up with what we had requested. But as with so many of the other reviews on here, people said they booked something only to get there to find out that they didnt have it. I actually voiced that to management and it was only after I told them this that they managed to find our exact accomodations after all.

They also agreed to take a night off the bill. Not only did they NOT do this but they ended up double billing us twice. We cannot get anyone there to call us back to resolve this. I found most of the staff there to be LESS than helpful when it came to resolving any issues or problems. I have asthma and am allergic to down bedding. it took them two days to switch the bedding.

They have a concierge there which will assist you with reservations. Not one night out of the seven that we were there that we showed up even after asking them to confirm did anyone actually have our reservation. The food on site was not that great. We had breakfast included which is served at Calypso. The service there was poor at best. The food in La Cucina was terrible. They claim it is authentic Italian food. The Royal Grille is supposed to be the only 5 star restaurant on the Island. Quite frankly it was inconsistent. One night we went it was great. We went again another night and the steak and lobster were like chewing on rubber and the service was lukewarm at best. You are far better off going off property to Marshall's or Serendipity or some of the other local places.

Also there were an inordinate number of locals on the beach selling their wares who were incessant and keep coming up to you and wont leave you alone. The Marriott also claims that they have security on the beach which we never saw. They also claim that they have beach service, where they will set you up on the beach with chairs and towels and drink service. This occured one day out of seven there. Otherwise it is pretty much lugging your own beach chairs and self service. While the property is pretty, this was not worth it and I would heed all of the other reviews on here as well. NEVER AGAIN. In fact, after this I am not sure I will ever stay in another Marriott.
