I decided to visit St. Kitts because I heard it wasn't touristy. That was obvious when researching hotels -- the choice of beachfront accommodations is very limited compared to other islands. Timothy was the best for me since I would be staying for only a 4 day long weekend: the beach was right there with snorkeling, nightlife was right along the beach, the hotel has a restaurant and the beach bar/grills allowed more dining options. Note: I am a young 51 year old African-American female and travel a lot alone.
On arrival, the receptionist was professionally welcoming, however it took a lot of effort on her part to get a staff member to help take my luggage to my room. The hotel is set into Timothy Hill and there are steps and steep ramps leading to the rooms. While waiting, she arranged a catamaran tour to Nevis for the following day on the Spirit of St. Kitts.
My very spacious ocean view room (C23) was located near the far end of the property had a large balcony with table and chairs. It was clean and the king size bed was comfortable. Two side chairs, a desk/dressing table with chair, eterge with tv and mini refrigerator completed the furniture. The refrigerator was old but functional. As other reviewers have stated, the A/C is a problem in that the fan speed or coolness can't be regulated -- it's either full blast (very cold) or nothing at all. Often I opened the windows and sliders to take advantage of the trade winds instead. Cable reception was not that clear, but there were numerous US channels including HBO.
The bathroom was adequate. The caulking could be redone but it was generally clean; hot water and towels were good. I'm finicky so always carry my own toiletries, but if you don't you'll only have soap here.
The restaurant was pretty good, but the dinner menu could have been more extensive for my taste. The beach bar had a 2 for 1 happy hour and great sunset views. I didn't even know where the pool was until my last day (above the beach bar); when in the Caribbean I'm mainly interested in the sea.
Right down the path was Mr. X's Shiggidy Shack, the beginning of bar/grill row. It was fun to stroll down and see what each venue had to offer. Friday is the big party night; Saturday Ziggy's was the hottest spot. People were friendly and fun loving.
The sailing catamaran tour was great -- staff wonderful and attentive to a single lady. The food was decent on Nevis and the snorkeling stop was adequate for novice snorkelers (not enough variety to be exceptional to me).
On my last morning, I finally saw a Vervet monkey crossing the road and got a quick photo. One of the housekeepers mentioned if I got some fruit, I would be able to lure lots of monkeys out of a tree at the end of the property. I went back to the restaurant, was offered a banana by a waitress and I broke it into pieces. One by one, monkeys came to the outer branches of the tree, and a couple bold souls came over to pick up the banana pieces. I ended up getting great pictures of these small primates.
All in all, I had a wonderful time. The hotel could make a few improvements, but I will stay there again just the way it is. I met someone who took me over to take a look at the massive Marriott, and I would not stay there even if it were free. Timothy Beach is just right for a St. Kittian experience.
