In a true spirit of last minute travel we booked a vacation in Timothy Beach Hotel, a night before the departure. Sun Quest had a great deal on St Kitts travel and we were in urgent need of hot sun and ice cold Pina Coladas. First we couldn’t decide between Marriott or Timothy Beach, but now looking back at our experience, no regrets on our choice.
I don’t think this experience is for everyone. If you are looking for perfectly manicured lawns, groomed beaches and never leaving your resort through your vacation, this hotel is not for you. My advice is, choose Bermuda! It will definitely deliver all those things.
Also St Kitts is a Caribbean Island on the richer side the scale, so doesn’t expect people to bend over backwards for a dollar tip. Locals probably make as much as you do at home.
However for some sweet liming (local term for chilling) time the island is great, so is the resort.
The property:
The building itself is older, but the rooms are spacious and clean, the balcony is huge (by the way, the upgrade to the Oceanview room is worth it, as you wouldn’t get a balcony otherwise). It is not luxurious, and the amenities are very simple (soap), so bring your own shampoo, conditioner etc. However, the maids are really good, and they will make sure you always have clean towels, sheets and the room is tidy.
Air conditioners were strong and quite, which is great, as nights are pretty hot, and it does get noisy at night from the beach shack parties outside.
The Pool:
The pool is bit too simple, and a bit cold, but completely empty. And as a special bonus you can see monkeys on the tree near by. Monkeys are very cool, and you can only see them in Barbados and St Kitts.
The Beach:
It is not a white sand groomed beach as you see on brochures for Dominican or Cuba. The Sand is gold and there is some debris, but it is a best beach hotel on the island, as it is on Caribbean side (Marriott is on Atlantic), so you can enjoy, bright aquamarine water, that is warm and bathtub calm. By the way we met few people that were staying at the Marriott on this trip and they preferred our beach to the stormy, colder but better groomed one in Marriott. Beach shacks are also super neat. You can enjoy a frosty “man’s beer” Stag (one of the cheap tasty local brews) or ubiquitous Heineken right in your bathing suite. Food is also available and varies from unpretentious chicken wings to my personal favorite sweet and fresh Caribbean lobster.
The Restaurant:
It is OK, but overpriced, and quality of the food isn’t that great. The service is quite slow, which is not that surprising as the whole island leaves in “Caribbean Time”….. It is way better deal to dine at one of the beach shacks. Oh, Lobster, I miss you already.
Excursions:
We really enjoyed our catamaran excursion to the sister island Nevis. However, heads up, there are a couple of catamaran tour providers on the island. One has yellow catamarans, and another one (actually the one we booked through Sun Quest has blue ones.) As insignificant the color difference might seem to you, these 2 providers are rather different:
Yellow Catamarans:
- smaller (so less space)
- no booze before snorkeling
- way better food
- free Killer Bee cocktails in Nevis (the killer bee cocktails is a whole different story, but I will hold on to that one until better times)
Blue Catamarans:
- Large a spacious
- Tasty beverages before and after swimming
- Meh food
- Killer bees are at extra charge
We chose Blue guys and the trip was loads of fun. The snorkeling reef we stopped at was also incredible, and snorkeling gear provided was comfortable and clean.
We also went scuba diving with Kenneth Dive shop, it was one of the best dives I’ve ever had. It was also my boyfriend’s best dive, but as it was his first one this information isn’t very valuable at all
Overall: really fun times, if you want your freedom of choice on what to do and when to do it. Also the resort gives you an amazing feeling that locals actually treat you as a person, not as a bag full of shiny coins.
Would definitely return and spend more time…
So long monkeys!
