I took my two sisters here for a five-day vacation. It took nearly a year to plan (we took no mates, no children, no pets, no work, no cell phones), but within minutes of arriving we were incredibly relaxed. Having been into the main house, my biggest piece of advice is to splurge and go for a standalone cottage. Ours had a plunge pool on one side looking over the grounds to the ocean and a back deck looking up into the mist-covered mountains. Best of all, it had complete privacy. We slept like the dead. The food is superb, the clientele is friendly, the staff is a delight, and Marty, the co-owner (we didn't meet his wife or her parents) is highly knowledgeable, as he proved on a tour of the extensive gardens. Yes, he's a bit of a know-it-all and he does visit your table every night at dinner, but he's smart and genuine and his heart's in the right place. St. Kitts feels like yesteryear Caribbean to me. Basseterre is charming but extremely low key. We took the free shuttle on Saturday to Cockleshell Beach, which was small but lovely and had a little lean-to serving some kick-ass rum punch. I remember saying to Marty at one point, "This isn't a hotel. It's an experience." He seemed to know what I was getting at.
