Recovery after the November 2008 hurricane continues. Just returned from Cayman Brac on 3/2/09. Many, many beaches are totally gone. Remaining beaches are strewn with debris or branches. Hurricane debris and destruction at every turn. No phone service via land lines. Island is not ready for onslaught of tourists. Limited dive leaders on island. Everything very expensive. Food very good. Coral reefs are in excellent shape, water very clear. Little or no activities for children. Very interesting walking trails on top of the Brac. It will be years before the place is back to normal. Avoid if you can.

I stayed at Cayman Brac Beach Resort. This was a divers paradise. The dive shop was part of the resort and they took care of everything.

The food on this little island was very limited. The resort offered the best all around dining spot and bar on the island.

The swimming pool and hot tub were both small but adequate.

The view was outstanding from almost every room.

We stayed at the Tradewinds- Breezy property 12/19/06 thru 12/26/06. We were told there was no reason to lock our doors or worry about anything being stolen because those things do not happen on Cayman Brac. I knew better than that, because those things can happen anywhere. I dead bolted the doors but left the windows open with the screens closed. Our second night there someone opened the screen and reached in and stole a rolex watch and a purse with $300.00 in it off the kitchen table.
We called the police but nothing has been found yet.

We have just spent a wonderful two weeks on Cayman Brac staying in a private house on the South Shore. Unfortunately, the currents outside our house were too strong to allow us to go into the sea so no morning swims. However, if we had been able to go into the sea from the house shore, I don't think we would have found all the fantastic snorkeling sites around the island. We thought ourselves very lucky as we saw Iguanas everyday on our drive back to the house in the afternoon; some visitors to the island who had been coming for years still hadn't seen one! The only wild life we had to go in search of was the Brac Parrot, we finally managed to see them flying around early one morning when before breakfast we set off to the bluff in search of them. Diving was the best so far (we have been diving for 3 years). Reef Divers looked after us very well. They were extremely professional, which made us all feel very safe. The briefings before the dive were very informative, which meant we missed very little. We would certainly recommend them. During the second week of our stay there was a Sand Sculpting Competition on the island and guess what, the boys won and made the local press, so for the remainder of our holiday they were something of a celebrity. If you are there next year when they hold the competition again, listen for talk of the 2004 winners who did the dragon sculpture - you'll have something to live up to. Will we be back? Most definitely. There are some great people on Cayman Brac and we would love to see them again. I could go on with this review but I really think you should go and see for yourself.

We just returned from an eight day stay on Cayman Brac (over Christmas) and were very disappointed. I must admit that the weather was a big factor in our stay--very windy and even cool some nights--which I realize no one has any control over, however the condition of the beaches was deplorable! There was garbage, broken glass and hundreds of odd shoes(??!!) on every beach we visited including at the resorts, although they were better than untended areas. We stayed at a privately owned duplex and the sand beach they advertised was marginal at best.
The information we got on line was mis-leading. It gave the impression that you could access the ocean from shore to snorkel (our reason for going) but if the seas are at all rough, forget it! You can't go across the coral and iron-shore without a full wet suit unless you want to get hurt! To be fair though the one day that we could get to the water the snorkeling was awesome--great visibilty and lots of fish to see. Also the people were so great and we had no problem finding good food and entertainment. I would also note that most of the web info suggested that you carry meat and alcohol across with you but we found that it was un-necessary--the local stores had everything we wanted or needed.
I can't say that I would never go back but it will be quite a while before I do!
