“Lovely meal”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2013

We were visiting Aberdaron for the weekend, and visited Ty Newydd for a meal on Friday evening, 28 June. The restaurant was very busy, but the food was delicious and was served with a smile. Our congratualations go to the chef. We will definitely eat there again when in Aberdaron.

This little hotel sits right on the beach with the sun verandah actually built over the sand. So the sea views are magnificent and makes for a quiet night's sleep. Even the seagulls were reasonably quiet!

The rooms are fresh, clean with some nice extra touches and our room - No. 7 - had triple aspect views and was very spacious. Usually a family room but will let for a couple.. Plenty storage space, and modern bathroom.

We could not complain about the food - perfectly adequate and value for money. The fish and chips were a favourite with a light batter, and the mussels were lovely. Breakfast was as good as anywhere else and freshly cooked to order. No self-service here for hot food which is our personal hate in hotels.

Aberdaron is right on the coastal path which is very convenient and also the village church has a long history of welcoming pilgrims.

We loved our few days here and will return!

Room Tip: I think all rooms face the sea and are either first or second floor. We hadn't realised there...

I was going to leave this review until after our next visit but the previous review is so like ours.
Check-in was good and given a car park pass to the local car park.
Room 7 sea view we could not fault. My wife felt a bit intimidated to walk in to a bar full of work men but hey ho it was Friday evening.
At check-in we asked if we needed to book at table for dinner, answer no.
So we got down early and picked a nice table and on our 2nd drink were told we needed to move because the table was booked. Any table in the window. no. It was the view from the restaurant we wanted, please find me a table, and they did. What a shame the food was terrible, I don't complain because I vote with my feet but my wife complained but to no avail.
We went across the road to The Ship and booked dinner for the next night.

We are going back in a weeks time, love the location, rooms and breakfast but I have already booked dinner in the Ship.
It is such a shame the chef is killing this place or is it what the management want or are prepared to pay.
The fact we are going back says a lot about the place but I won't pay to eat here.
Keith.

We only came for a meal as we were staying elsewhere; the food was poor, obviously mostly frozen food. The follwing night we gave The Ship over the road a look in, we had lovely home cooked food and great personal service from Allen the owner.

This is only one of two hotels/pubs in Aberdaron and it has the best position with some rooms looking out into Aberdaron Bay. The current owner has redeveloped much of Ty Newydd, and most notably he's opened up the main restaurant/bar area and made it into a gastro pub, and also extended the balcony over the beach. During the summer, it gets very crowded but if you can get a balcony seat on a warm summer evening then there's no better place to enjoy a drink.
The small bar area can make it difficult to get served during busy periods, toilets are round the front and you have to go through the front lounge which is favoured by locals and it can be a little intimidating. Food is expensive and during our visits a large number of meals were returned partially eaten which isn't a very good sign. In addition, bar staff can be indifferent towards tourists but this is nowhere near as bad as the nearby Ship Hotel.
Overall then, it's a decent hotel in a great spot and with a lovely balcony area but it's nowhere near perfect.

I have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Gwesty Newydd with my husband. We had stayed at this hotel about 2 years ago and liked it so much we couldn't wait to come back. This time we only had a partial sea view room but the view was still stunning and listening to the waves at night is very relaxing. We had our evening meal here on the first night and the food was lovely. It did get quite busy and service was a bit slow but it was bank holiday weekend and lovely weather so everyone was out! Our room was clean and bathroom was spacious.
The only complaint I have about this hotel is that the walls are quite thin and you can hear people walking up and down the stairs and children running around the corridors, also there is a door bell that rings quite often when no one is at reception.
I would recommend this hotel more for families.

If you are vegetarian, then advoid this pub. The vegetarian option I had can only be described as slop at a premium price. The chips were bad and overcooked at an extra charge. My partners lasagne was also overcooked. The waitress was ok but didn't ask if everything was ok with our meals. The service was very slow. The only good thing about this venue is the view!
