From the moment we first drove up to The Meridian we were impressed. The property is newer, quality construction and it is beautiful, inside and out. I believe that it was built in 2005.
Inside: We stayed in villa #12 and the decor has an air of tropical elegance and has most of the comforts of home. The bedrooms were comfortable and elegant, and the bathrooms were very nice (especially the master). They had great linens, towels and plenty of pool / beach towels.
Outside: The building is beautiful. The grounds were well-kept and the pool and spa were great. There was LOTS of gorgeous beach out front and plenty of seating and shade. We went for walks on the beach and some of the other condos, and especially the resorts, had less beach space and a lot more people! They looked like sardines at the Ritz, Hyatt, Westin and Marriott. The Marriott was the worst!
We considered several other properties and we truly feel that we made the best choice.
The bad: There is construction directly next door. We opted for the villa right next to the construction. It really made no difference where you stayed on the property and It didn't bother us at all. You get used to it real fast and when you close the doors, it gets a lot quieter. Also, the island is pretty expensive. So have your credit card ready or go to the store, stock up, cook or BBQ at "home" and enjoy lunch or dinner on your balcony or beach side. Remember, almost everything closes on Sundays, including liquor stores and super markets.
The good: There is a super market directly across the street that has everything you need. Also, there are 2 liquor store across the street. There are several great restaurants within walking distance of the property. Copper Falls is directly across the street and Deckers is just a short walk to the south. Both are awesome.
Also, there is a great coffee shop / sandwich shop (Paperman's) across the street. The food on the island is magnificent... a little too good!
Tips: Careful crossing the street. Always look right first! Taxis are readily available, but the public bus system is super easy. If they see you walking on their side of the street they honk and if you flag them down, they pull over for you. It's about $2.50 CI, which beats a $15 cab ride. If you are a diver, try Deep Blue ([--] - Nick). We went diving with them on our last trip to the island and will definitely use them again.
The Turtle Farm is a must, but make a day out of it. It was amazing! And, of course, Sting Ray City... WOW!!!
This was our 2nd time to the island and we will be back and we will stay at The Meridian.
